The Red Lion Colonial is a nice place to stay in Helena. It is conveniently located near the capital and other downtown locations. The staff was friendly and helpful. The shower head in the bathroom is very low and I had to duck to get my hair wet.

We loved everything about it. Outstanding location and the accommodations were exemplary. Beds were perfect and very little noise from air conditioner or anywhere inside our outside. We'd love to go back.

We stayed three nights and were very comfortable. Positive things: Rooms were clean and tidy. The kids loved the pool and hot tub. The hot tub is at a constant 100 degrees which is cooler than a typical hot tub, but it was still relaxing. Rooms have been renovated as well as the lobby and it's very nice. Negative things: The heater in our room would blow out cool air at times but it wasn't bad enough to call the front desk. The pool area did get overrun by 3 or 4 men a couple of nights who wanted to drink in the hot tub - but our kids were done swimming by then anyway. The fitness area is a small room and the machines aren't anything to write home about but they served their purpose. We're not very high maintenance people so we didn't see anything to complain about - overall, we were very pleased with the price of the room and the cleanliness. And it passed muster with our two biggest critics - our kids! They want to stay there again, so I guess that says a lot!

Past stays at this hotel have been acceptable, this time they it was not close. This time they put us in the new addition but the rooms are much smaller, bathrooms tiny, the hot tub was cold for 2 days (changed water), the fire alarm would go off when you took a shower, no towels in the pool area, forgot to make up the room one day, water vending machine broke, breakfast buffet barely warm (a stove was broke), front desk unconcerned with any problem.

First, we discovered that the in-house restaurant closes at 1pm on Sunday. There was no room service Sunday night either. Other hotels do this, but I hate it. Second, we found our room had not been vacuumed very well because we found dried food on the carpet. The bathroom was not hotel-clean either. My wife noticed a small amount of mold in the bathroom. Third, the hotel left bottles of water in the room. Ordinarily, that's a good thing... except that each bottle cost $2 (to be added to the bill). To be fair - they DID put a card on the bottle explaining this (the cost was at the bottom of the text) - but I've never before seen this approach to selling bottled water. When you're thirsty, who reads the fine print? Fourth, if you want to use the indoor pool or (small) exercise room, you will have to walk through a medium-sized conference/dining room. No kidding. There is a waist-high half wall on the left side to channel you to the back of the room and keep your towel from touching the place settings, but you are still in the same room. Swimmers will undoubtedly feel self concious and business meeting participants will undoubtedly be distracted by bikinis and sweaty exercisers... Fifth, the 2nd floor level changes an inch or so when you go from one of the wings to the main building. The carpet does not give you a good visual cue and you should be careful not to trip. None of these things made the visit horrible, but their cumulative effect made me not want to go back.

Most hotels do not have gift shops and seeing the earlier review about it being like a garge sale I ahave to disagree. The space is small and they have an amazing variety for a small space with things for kids to do while parents are in meetings to Montana gifts. I asked and it is independant from the Red Lion but I thing it is a plus, they all should have one.

Wonderful location - friendly staff - dog friendly. Bathroom could have used a higher standard of cleaning.

Great location, close to functions we had to attend, clean modern room. Really no complaints. Decent facility, clean entry, hallways, room, outside grounds were cleaned up after winter, so was appealing to the eye.

I was well pleased with everything. My only complaint was the gift shop, as I felt that it was far under the standards of the hotel in how it presented itself (ie. garage sale?).

Cool staircase in the lobby-Gone with the wind style. Room was dirty.

Nice room, reasonable price. Nice room, much better than the crappy Shiloe Inn (nearby).

The room was clean and comfortable. The hotel seems a little outdated. The hotel was clean and the staff was good.

Nice rooms. Decorated well. Too far away from downtown. Keys didn't work in outside doors. Nice hotel overall. I would have liked to have stayed closer to downtown. My room key didn't work in the outside doors, and I had to be switched from room, because of problems with the room keys.

location, staff friendly, appealing to the eye. Myself and my future spouse got very little sleep. Security was non existent. When we used the swimming pool on Sunday morning, one of my daughters friends cut her foot from broken bears bottles left from the night before. I didn't get very much sleep, so my visit with my children was strained.

Beds were comfortable. Absolutely fridged public spaces. I certainly would not classify this hotel as a 3 star. The heating controls in the room were broken and the hallways and public spaces did not seem to be heated. Bare-bones staffing led to long waits at the front desk. The restaurant food was ok, but overpriced.
