Picked the hotel due to location and "authenticity" (i.e. not a huge chain hotel). The staff here is great -- very nice, helpful, and know the city well. Rooms clean and housekeeping does a nice job. Rooms are quite small with no view, but are quiet. Very easy walking access to almost all of San Diego, but sometimes immediate area can be a bit gritty. There is a nice roof deck!

The location was in a great area lots to do and all within walking distance of hotel. Very old , elevators were a little scary, rooms were very small hardly had room to get into bed. This hotel is great for someone who does not want to drive a lot in San Diego, the Gaslamp district is very active with about every kind of restaurant imaginable and lots of music. The rooms are very small and can't watch TV except if you are on the bed(which by the way is very comfortable). Staff is friendly. Only real draw back is that they charge $20 a day for valet parking in addition to your hotel cost.

I found this place because the prices associated with hotels for a conference I was attending were absurd. This hotel was about half the price and worked out great for me. The place was clean, bed was comfortable, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. It's an easy and safe walk from the hotel to the convention center, and there are a number of convenience stores, restaurants, shops, etc., nearby. The hotel has a lot of character, too -- the ceiling in my room must have been about 15' high! Not the most modern place, so if you're looking for a luxury hotel experience you're probably better off someplace else. But if you want a clean, convenient, affordable alternative to the pricier hotels in the area then this is a good bet. I personally enjoyed staying at a place that was unique, and not a carbon copy of what is offered in any city in the world.

If you like stepping back in time a little bit while in the middle of all the action in San Diego's famous Gaslamp Quarter, then this is a good pick for you. If you like to spend a lot of money for a posh, modern hotel, then look elsewhere. It doesn't take a world-traveler to see that this is a "nearly restored" hotel from 1913 and might not be back to its original charm. Elevators are charming, actually famous, but not fast or roomy. Don't miss the plaque telling their story. The room was small but adequate. The bed was wonderful. The staff was very accommodating. Allow an extra 15 min if you're using the airport shuttle; not always prompt leaving! The restaurant was actually pretty good. If you're a light sleeper, consider earplugs. Not a bad trade-off for being in the heart of it all.

Great location and friendly, helpful staff. It was the perfect location for the activities we had planned. We are not really night people but enjoyed walking down 5th Avenue at night and seeing all the activity. If you plan to stay here, especially on a weekend, bring ear plugs. No matter where you stay in this area you will hear the night noises and you might have a hard time sleeping. This really didn't effect us to much but we were there during the week. Other friends who were also staying in the area commented that they used earplugs to help reduce the noise.

We stayed three days, early November, in the Ramada Hotel. The location is perfect: walking distance from everything you may need: restaurants and a great mall too. Nice sundeck terrace, complimentary shuttle for the ( very close ) airport. Newspapers in the lobby. Friendly service. We lost a small diamond earring and we got it back. If you consider the daily rate, this is a great Hotel and we definitely recommend it.

I had the worst night of sleep of my life! This hotel is literally in the middle of the Gaslamp District. We were very unlucky to stay here on the night before St. Patricks Day. All night long we could hear the beeping of trucks backing up, engines idling, chain link fences being assembled, Johnny on the Spots being unloaded, stages being set up, and lot of other noise! The street was closed off for the celebration making it almost impossible to get around. We were staying on the 7th floor. The worlds slowest and smallest elevator was broken most of the time we were there, making difficult to get our luggage up and down the stairs. If you are looking for a place to stay to party and be in the middle of the action stay here. But not a place for families or people who are into sleeping.

Hotel is relatively old and dilapidated, although some may consider this charming. Elevators were mind-numbingly slow. Rooms were small and marginally equipped. The bathrooms were very small although they were clean. It had a good location being very close to most of the major attractions of Gaslamp, but that was about the biggest selling point. It did have free wireless internet, although it was quite slow.

Quaint, nostalgic hotel. Hot/Cold water a little unpredictable, but acceptable. This hotel was great as long as you go in expecting to stay at an older, nostalgic hotel. Yes its been upgraded recently, but the building is still 100 years old. The elevators still run at the same speed that they did 100 years ago, and the fact that the hot/cold water wasn't always predictable was OK because at least the hotel had indoor plumbing and we didn't have to share the bathrooms with all the other folks on the same floor. It was FUN! And I would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Have stayed here before but didn't have the chance to enjoy just cause we got in and out fast. But this time got to enjoy the heaven that is the bed! Wow! Hands down the best mattress I have ever stayed on! Slept like a baby! Water in the shower is a little erratic though, hot to cold to hot again then cold.

The Ramada Inn and Suites is conveniently located in the heart of downtown San Diego Gaslamp district. If you're looking for entertainment and extreme partying, this is the place to be---just walking distance of many of the bars and nightclubs. I love it their dining area is opened really late!

Excellent staff. Superb rooftop terrace. Great location. Charged us for water bottles (tap water tasted weird). Excellent staff. Good valets. Classic old hotel - original elevators. Because of the age, rooms were pretty small.

Let's start from the mattress lying in the hallway on the first floor, the elevator was tiny and no one offered to assist us (two ladies with heavy bags) with our luggage, my sheets were torn, my friends sheets (in her room) had stains on them, my ceiling had mold, I found a small dead bug in my bed, they forgot to do my wake up call, the lights in my room flickered, the bathroom was tiny with no tub. The place was a total dump. We checked out the very next day and went elsewhere! I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. The staff could care less. Laughable!

The Ramada/St.James was an interesting site. It's a very old hotel with few amenities. The staff was very nice but not overly efficient. At check-in, I was not informed of the airport shuttle, any facilities offered by the hotel such as a workout room, restaurants or the like. Also, the 12th floor has a great view of the city but no one ever mentioned it. Overall, I felt like the staff just wanted us to register, stay, leave. I didn't get the impression that the staff cared whether I was there or not.

the ramada inn is an OLD hotel. the elevator is original, and while that's charming, keep in mind that if you're staying on the upper floors it takes a while to get there. The rooms are small and the bathrooms are smaller. most of the decor is stuck in the 1980's. overall, it's a place to lay your head, but it's not much more than that. the location is nice, but when you get out and walk around the city and see all the other hotels you could have stayed in, you might have post-reservation envy.

The Ramada Gaslamp was a great value. Quaint would be the word. I arrived late and left early so I really didn't get to see if there were any amenities.

The service. The elevator is to slow and difficult to open and close.

Staff was very friendly. Location was excellent. Breakfast options somewhat limited. Room was Ok. Better that we expected based on the former reviews. I would recommend this hotel to my friends
