Double BookedThis is an excellent boutique type hotel. Staff are spot on. Unfortunately someone, not sure who, got in a muddle with our booking and we had to leave after three days. We were advised of this by e.mail just before we left for Gatwick ! They did however find us a good alternative to move to, with even better accomodation, albeit in a large hotel.

What this hotel has got is a tremendous view overlooking Funchal. The room was a bit box like but opened out to a very spacious balcony, where one could sit and gaze over the gorgeous setting. Breakfast was ok (fresh fruit salad only on the last day) but didn't eat in restaurant. Service was personal with staff remembering your name, but not that difficult as there is only 24 rooms.It's a nightmare to drive around the hotel's location with 1 in 3 gradients, narrow one way systems and you not only have to negotiate the traffic, but the toboggans that slide right past the hotel door!

Unusual boutique hotel with superb views over the city and a lovely sun terrace. Rooms large and modern but mattress very firm. When we visited (June 08), service in the restaurant was terrible, however. Also note that this hotel is on a VERY steep road halfway up the mountainside.

This is like a boutique hotel, it is a gorgeous hotel for couples but not families, there was great parking just opposite, the look and style of the hotel was really appealing, very modern and stylish, the views absolutely amazing, I think one of the best views other than on the cable car, also the bonus of watching the tobogans go by. We stayed there for three nights in the rooms overlooking the pool just as I had requested. The bar is great for an apperatif at the beginning and end of the night, we ate one evening meal there and it was priced similar to eating out in the town, we did not find prices excessive. The staff in the hotel were attentive and had a sense of humour which was appreciated, they called taxis for us for the bar and informed us when they were there. We also had the English tea one afternoon out on the terrace in February in the scorching sun, the little sandwiches/cakes/cream tea/ buns were fab and it was difficult not to eat it all...so we did!!The only points to note which I told the reception about was that the lighting in the bar was extremely poor, they needed wall lights or lamps. In the bedrooms and bathrooms there was no lighting to apply makeup, my eyesight is very good and I couldnt see a thing. The breakfast was quite poor, there was two types of eggs, frank sausages, yogurts in pots and a toaster that was nearly dead on its legs(I had lunch whilst I waited for my toast) I was also appalled that having visited Madeira before and been to the fantastic fruit and flower market that they have, they dared to serve tinned pineapple and apricots....shame. I think the chef needs to be careful about some of his combinations as it spoilt some of the lovely food that was served, but overall what a brilliant place to stay and finally the reception computer played Happy Birthday for me!!

Extremely welcoming and professional staff; hotel amenities were of a high quality though rooms lacked tea and coffee making facilities; spa area was well furbished with a pleasant atmosphere though an indoor pool would have been advantageous in cooler weather; restaurant a la carte menu excellent though a little expensive (set menus were good value for money and included wine); excellent situation for taking in the picturesque views of Funchal (the tobbagons run alongside the hotel!) though set on a very steep slope; frequent local bus service and taxis nearby and hotel shuttle bus runs into town twice a day. A good idea to book a 'superior' room if you like a little more space and a balcony. An ideal place to stay if you like smaller hotels with a more personal service; not great for children.
