We arrived a little past midnight and the person at the front desk was anything but welcoming. Then he informed us that to park at the hotel you would need to pay 20 dollars per night. Ouch. He said we could park out on the street if we wanted to (funny since you have to have a parking permit.) The parking garage smelled like old cheese. The room was decent, I had gotten a good deal online so I was not too unhappy. It just must of been the sharpy all over the bathroom walls and the cigarette burns on the curtains in the non smoking room. And all of the ice machines where down. Oh there was also a sign in the elevator that said no outside food or drink????????

Very cool and hip. Maybe to hip for my age of 47 but never the less perfect location and price if you have those early am flights out of LAX.

We thought that the price was right and that this would be a good match for us since we are traveling on a budget, but wanted to stay somewhere clean and downtown. This is NOT a downtown location. There are buses that go downtown, but not in the late night so going out requires about $20. cab fare back to the hotel. Also, parking costs $20. for overnight (different from the price I was told over the phone which was only the daytime price of $10.) and internet costs $15. per day. Part of the deal for this hotel was also that we were supposed to get a voucher to the hotel's diner for $10. towards breakfast. NO ONE told us AT ANY POINT that breakfast was only served until 10am and it was NOT POSTED ANYWHERE. So we missed breakfast by about 5 minutes and thus didn't get our voucher redeemed. The worst part was that the people who worked behind the front desk were surly, argumentative and the opposite of helpful. The room was clean enough that I didn't feel I needed to sleep in my own sleeping bag, but it was falling apartholes in the curtains, peeling wall paper and air vents falling apart. Not to mention that the balcony (which should be a bonus in any hotel room) was shared but a noisy and ugly swamp cooler. We actually HATED this hotel and the service so much that we switched to the Georgian Court Hotel which was under construction and still managed to be nicer than the Plaza 500.

Willingly changed horrible room. Room was horrible; hallways stifling hot/grubby.

Great value hotel. Excellent location in a great neighbourhood, easy access to downtown, broadway, main st.. Will definitely stay here next time we're in Vancouver.

Stay date: March 19/08 You can't beat the price of $* CDN for a large Vancouver hotel room but I will not be staying again. My primary complaint is the noise -- sirens from ambulances on their way to nearby VGH, early morning construction on Vancouver's RAV line, test runs of the new RAV trains during the night, clunky ice machines, and loud guests in the hallway. This is a hotel that would benefit from soundproofing. It is looking quite shabby and in need of a reno but is within the parameter of the current price point. The staff is friendly and helpful Figmint offers a terrific 1st class breakfast -- including a $10 credit from the hotel Great view of Vancouver Large rooms Convenient location HTH

The room was quite spacious, but we were awakened one morning with a shower leak from the room above!

Excellent directions for transportation by the front desk, but could have used free Wi-Fi.

The room was bigger than expected. The staff would not confirm 2 beds in the standard room until arrival. Thankfully we arrived early enough, but I was very concerned.

I stayed at this wonderful hotel 6 nights. Location was great! Staff was very courteous and helpful. Though there is some street construction around the hotel (going towards downtown) but did not take us too long on those streets. Room was great with a great view of downtown and mountains. My kids, wife and I enjoyed our stay. There is a Mall across the street with food court, starbucks, safeway grocery store, and also a dollar store. It was very convenient for us Our stay was very pleasant here and I will definitely stay there again!!

I was looking for a decent place to crash for a couple of days with a friend and we were going for the lowest rate in the 3-4 star category. The Plaza did just that. It's infrastructure (plumbing and air conditioning) is kinda creaking but the room, comfortable beds, and location compensates for the hotel's aging amenities. You also have to pay for everything (parking, internet access, etc...). Not alright !!

Clean, efficient, location excellent for early morning taxi to the airport, taxis right outside door.

Not bad for the money, I stayed here on a business trip, and would stay again for the same purpose. For my vacations I prefer something a bit more upscale. The Hotel lost a lot of kudos in my book, when, three weeks into my stay (November 21,08) one of the pop machines ate my last change, the restaurant was already closed (past midnight,) the front desk attendee did not help me out and gave me attitude for asking him for some change, so I drove around the city to by a can of pop. Maybe it's just me, but after paying for a five week stay I thought they could spot me a dollar, considering that it was their pop machine in the first place.

The hotel was very friendy and addressed standards. The location was very good with access to the BC Liquor store and 15 bus routes and soon the subway line once it opens in 2009. It also has the best view in the world!

Much improved. Hotel, Service, and Restaurant. Having previously stayed here for location, again stayed "for location" - and was pleasantly surprised. The rooms, while small, have been updated. The restaurant FigMint was a delightful change, with exceptional service. The front desk staff "depended on who was on" ... a very pleasant and helpful gentleman checked me in, my husband arrived later. He met with an officious female attendant who may have been having a bad day ... she still was when I went downstairs to get assistance later that evening. Parking attendants were very pleasant and helpful. Be aware that construction is ongoing outside the hotel on Cambie Street. Signage to hotel entrance NEEDS to be improved ... I knew where I was going but very nearly missed it .. it does not say "Plaza 500" anywhere at vehicle eye-level that I could see ... just over the canopy of the entrance. Would definately stay again for this location, it is the best for convenience to VGH, and also has a small shopping (inside) mall directly across street, including a sizeable Safeway grocery store. It would be appreciated to have "included" wireless access ... or at least one hour of free internet for paying guests. To pay for 'wireless' or a brief check of emails or using mapquest when paying in the well over $$$ range for a room seems petty. Many $$ rooms offer free internet !

The Plaza 500 was spacious and comfortable and had a nice view of city. Downfall was the bathroom door was broken, small tv, no microwave and HAD TO PAY FOR PARKING which was $20 a night unless you can find a non-towaway spot on the street nearby. Looking for cheap but comfortable and moderately safe place to stay this is good.

Expensive parking, old food on dining trays left in the hallway the entire day. Iwould not stay at this place again. Ive stayed at better place.

The room and alleys including carpet is in a bad shap and needs uplift. Specially the old four storey section is miserable. This review is based on our stay in the 3rd week of August 2008

Our room had a great view and the layout was nice. The staff was friendly as well. They charged $20 a night for parking and they charged to use their computer to access the internet as well. The second night we parked on a nearby street for free so it is pretty easy to avoid the parking fee. All in all, we enjoyed our stay. We thought the hotel was ok.
