Abergavenny sits on the South-East edge of the Brecon Beacons. By train there is a mainline railway station, just south of the town, coming from London and Cardiff via Newport, and the North via Hereford. It's less than a five minute walk. But with luggage, book a taxi to collect you. We recommend the reliable...Sheila's Taxis, 01873 857954.There is an excellent network of roads to Abergavenny. You get here from the Midlands via Ross-on-Wye on the M50 or from London and the East, via the Severn bridges, on the M4. Leave the M4 at junction 24, and go North on the A449 up to Raglan, and then West on the A40 to Abergavenny. You'll approach Abergavenny on the A4042 from the South, the A465 from the West and North, or the A40 from the East. These roads meet at a roundabout just south of the town. Take the A40 signposted to Abergavenny. Soon after the roundabout, Plas Derwen is situated about 100 yards up on the right hand side.

Great value for money, clean & spacious room. Food was excellent and all the staff friendly and helpful. Plenty of parking and a very convenient location for many areas.

Very FriendlyWe would have given a 6 for the quality of the room, our only reason for down-grading to a 5 was that room 8 where we stayed had no outside window only a very large Velux window. We only stayed for 1 night so it was fine, could have been a problem had we been staying any longer.Over-all we both thought it was a good clean and friendly hotel and would certainly stay again. Would recommend to friends and family.

Plas Derwen, AbergavennyOnly needed room & breakfast for one, ended up with large double room inpleasant comfortable ground floor "outbuilding", very reasonable rate, excellent, thank you.Evening meal - lots of choice, side salad a bit sad but otherwise excellent - and v good value.Really didn't mind saving the lives of two disorientated bumble bees wandering about the window sill.

Good baseIts the 2nd time we've stayed in this hotel, and enjoyed it both times. Haven't tried their evening meals but breakfast was quite good. Room very comfy. An ideal base to walk into Abergavenny town.

DisappointingWe expected a lot more of this hotel from the blurb, we were very disappointed. Luckily for this hotel the manageress (from Huddersfield) was exceptional The room we were offered had only a very small skylight no other windows, after half an hour, we asked to be moved to a room with conventional windows. After some confusion we were moved to a good room, with 2 nice sized windows. Lacking a sofa or comfy chair despite lots of room for one, the bathroom had nowhere to put toiletries, so our toilet bags had to be on the floor, a shelving unit would be great & there was plenty of room for one

A great value-for-money base for exploring the areaThe hotel is really a pub/restaurant with a few rooms. It's right next to a main road which can be a little noisey but does make it easier to find and was quiet at night. We had 2 rooms - one of which was huge and both had views towards the mountains. The food at breakfast and dinner was excellent (expect \"real\" food). The place was popular with people in the area making it a little busy but the service was quick (considering how busy it was) and very friendly. The hotel and restaurant were great value-for-money and location made it excellent for exploring the area.

Good Place to stayStayed on 6 March 2009 for one night as travelling to meet family next day. Arrived 7pm and welcomed by owner who showed us to our room ( Number 7 in stable block ) . Newly renovated and not like a hotel room at all - more like staying in a cottage ! - excellent space, very clean, large and modern en-suite with bath and fantastic power shower. Dined in restaurant for evening meal and spoilt for choice for starters and main courses ( plenty of choice of desserts too ) - food fantastic and very reasonable ( £33 for starters and main courses for 2 people with glass of wine and pint of beer ). First in for breakfast at 8 am the next day, good choice of cereals, hot options and choice of tea and coffee. One of those places worth coming back to for next time we are around the area.

reviewThe whole stay was enjoyable and value for money, and the staff were helpful, it was also pretty central to town. The only bad thing was the room was not as clean as it could have been - in particular the bathroom.

Enjoyable few days We had a very enjoyable stay at this comfortable hotel but the food I am afraid did not reflect the quality of the hotel The meals were expensive for what they were I had to return my starter as the chicken was hard & burnt , and vegetables were not cooked - I had my money back on the starter. Our first breakfast was very meager only orange fruit juice tea, coffee and very little choice of cereal and certainly no fruit although we could have a full Welsh breafast or boiled eggs - the second breakfast was more plentiful giving us a pot of tea for four and toast and marmalade with a full Welsh breakfast. Our rooms were excellent and could not fault them. A better quality of menu would have made the holiday perfect
