The Palace Hotel - Not really a palace but...My husband and I stayed for a long weekend at the Palace Hotel. The hotel is quite old, but kept in beautiful condition and has superb grounds, so is very relaxing. Upon entering our room (basic double) I was disappointed as this was a 4 star hotel and the room (although really clean) was old and a bit tired looking and it is a long time since we had seen a 12" television! The shower room was extremely basic and the shower head was only about 4 feet off the ground which for my husband, especially, made showering difficult. The tiles and general facilities for the bathroom and shower room were old and need replacing in keeping with a four star hotel. However, we stayed on a dbb basis and this was the highlight of our stay. The food was superb (4 courses for dinner), the staff were friendly, professional and nothing was too much trouble for them - this was true of all the staff at the hotel. The leisure facilities are also superb with heated pool, croquet, tennis, golf etc. all on the hotel grounds. There is also an enjoyable, but extremely steep, walk down to Anstey Cove which is worth the effort. We would definitely stay there again but would upgrade to a superior room.

The staff were excellent, very friendly and efficient. The restaurant food was very good both for quality and quantity. Our waitress Karolina was extremely helpful and an asset to the hotel. The only disappointing points were the rooms which are very dated and a little worn. Also is was extremely hot in the room (no airconditioning) and the shower was like a hosepipe!!

POOR!!we booked a room with breakfast and evening meal but were told we couldnt eat in the dining room as shirts shoes and jeans are not smart enough! we could however have taken it to our room apparently although when you are away for a romantic getaway who would want to sit in their hotel room around a tiny table and eat a 3course meal! and they had the cheek to say it would cost £5 to have it delivered up! so we ended up going out for a meal both nights and therefore spending twice as much! we were not happy, having a dress code is fine but if you dont tell people that on your own websites or sites like laterooms how will people know!?the leisure facilities were good but our room was also very poor.

Short break weekend stayStaff on arrival very friendly. We had been allocated a room at the front of the hotel, which was very nice but asked if we could upgrade to a garden facing room. Excellent service and we were transferred straight away with an upgrade. The extra money for the garden facing room was worth every penny. Lovely room, very clean and spacious and the views over the garden worth every penny. The food and standard of the hotel was excellent and we would stay again. We used to live in Torquay many years ago and the hotel has always had a very good reputation.

4* star hotel except for our bedrooms The hotel itself is excellent although rather old fashioned - the restaurant was lovely - the food delicious, the staff were brilliant and the pianist was a nice touch. The very large garden was impeccable complete with swimming pool. HOWEVER - the first bedroom we were shown overlooked the kitchen - very grotty outlook and more importantly the noise from a generator/air conditioner was awful - they said it would be turned off at 9 p.m. !! When you book 4* the room should be 4* as well not 1* - the second room provided was a little better - no noise - but very tired, old furniture! Quite a long walk to the sea and town - 20/30 minutes at least. The room was not discounted for it's poor quality!

Good dealroom size too small even for a single room. Facilities were ok but the staff mainly the male ones at the main desk could have been more helpful or rather interested in helping. The food was very good and the room service was impressive. Very close to the city center. Though I wont stay here again, its not a bad deal at all.

Old but young at heartAn excellent old-style hotel. Don't expect plasma TV or Wi-Fi but do expect a comfortable room, well-cared for facilities, friendly service, a superb table d'hote dinner and a good (but not excellent) breakfast. Super grounds and leisure facilities. Good local bus service to central Torquay if you don't want to walk (about 30 minutes) or drive.

Basking in glories of the pastExcellent Bed & Breakfast rate of £55.00 on Laterooms.com, but that's where the value ended. Dinner in the hotel was a Table d'Hote menu with a small selection of starters, main courses & desserts for the appetite-spoiling £28.00! There was also a 'Georgian' Restaurant signposted in the hotel and once the signs were followed through the hotel, it was closed on the night. I chose to eat out. Breakfast included a small selection of cereals and other continental items but certainly nothing to compare to other hotels in this class. Why were there 3 different waiters to take my coffee, toast and cooked breakfast order, as well as a head waiter walking around to ensure the smooth running of everything? Now I know why they charge so much for the food; one hell of a wage bill. The hotel is a massive complex with meeting rooms, games rooms and sports facilities, but with all its photos of previous snooker championship tournaments held there, old-fashioned decor and display cabinets, you get the feeling it is a tired hotel in need of a major face-lift. My room certainly looked very dated with a tiny portable tv, but was very clean and a good size for a standard single. No wi-fi in rooms but it's free in reception. Perhaps this was once a grand hotel 20-30 years ago, but the guest it now attracts is of the foreign tourist/business people on a budget variety but with ridiculous food prices to try to recoup some money and pay those wages. Great hotel if you want traditional service in the restaurant, but be prepared to pay for it.

A beautiful traditional hotel that provides excellent service, excellent food and leisure facilities. A real pleasure to stay in.Sadly, they have been forced to abandon the jacket and tie rule for dinner .

Customer service level is below a 4-star hotel standardThe hotel environment is very good, with a variety of sports facilities. As over 80% of the guests are old people, you won't have problem to use any facilities. However, we have a very unpleasant experience with our stay. We ordered a package with breakfast and dinner. As it was only 3 nights leisure holidays, we only brought our jeans with us. We were not allowed to have dinner at the hotel restaurant. We didn't receive any notice in advance about the dress code of the dining area. We paid for the dinner but not allowed to get in. How ridiculous! Finally, we have to pay extra money to have room service, can you imagine? Dinner in Bed!! Besides, we also needed to buy a proper clothes to be allowed to eat in the restaurant. All in all, we would recommend this hotel to English people.

First room was terrible. Asked for room change with double bed. Cost £15. It had x10 dead flys in room. Dust was everywere, it was awful! Room service came and was deep fried frozen food. I would not recomend this hotel and I expect a responce from the hotel after the comments I left. 1 good thing the grounds were nice.

Good facilities but pool and area where a bit 'weathered'. The rooms was good although windoes needed painting and no internet access in room. That said for the price and the breakfast and also the staff service - this was very good value for money
