It was a very bad start to my weekend get away. Upon trying to leave my bags (as I arrived early), I was given an extremely rude and condescending "Check in is at 3. WE DON'T HAVE A ROOM" before I could even say a word. I thought I was the paying guest.Needless to say, this extremely rude guest relations person named [...] neglected to take down my name so by the time I came back to check in, the only rooms left were smoking. Even though I had confirmation for a NON-SMOKING room. They "upgraded" me to a bigger room, (smoking) but the entire place was in dire need of renovation and clean up. This place is worn down. Stains on carpet and cracked sink.

Location was close to restaurants, and public transportation. The security at the front door was great as you need your room key to open lobby door. Room with the queen bed was small though very clean. For the price I paid through Priceline, it was worth the stay. Amenities were there, continental breakfast served was substantial, attentiveness of staff and cleanliness good. Security at front door very assuring. Centrally located to all tourist attraction and easy freeway access to going south of the city.

Assistance from the staff at the front office was great and very polite. We checked in after our Greyhound journey from Anaheim and were tired but felt very welcome. The location is excellent with buses that run to Union Square, walking distance to SF Trams that took us down to Lombard St & Fisherman's Wharf. Food outlets around the hotel were abundant and we even ventured a few streets down to some asian food where we had really authentic Thai Food. It was a good and very comfortable stay. We would however like to advise that some kind of ramp be installed to assist guests in bringing up luggage from street level to the lobby level. Otherwise and excellent stay!

We booked a week at the Opal, for a conference I had to attend. The location is great - bus stops on either side, lots of great restaurants nearby & a movie theater right next door! Check out Tommy's Joint across the street - great food, even better drinks, HUGE servings. The Peruvian/Mexican restaurant diagonal from Tommy's was a very pleasant surprise - excellent food. There is also a yummy little bakery about two doors further down the street. The service was wonderful at the hotel, the morning breakfast was okay (plain bagels, 3 kinds of cereal, a nice nut bread) but not fancy. Every request was met, and the information available from the staff on things to do & places to go was superb. We had to change rooms to a smoking room after the first night. Even though those rooms are farther away from the front lobby, the walk was manageable & the room every bit as nice inside as the room in the main building. The only gripe I have is about the amenities - dinky packets of shampoo & lotion, no bottles, no conditioner, and no soap dish, only one bar of soap. Despite that minor peeve, we will definitely stay again!

The hotel was very safe and monitored 24 hours. The only access into the hotel was with your room key. The staff was polite and helpful. Transportation was almost right outside your door. The bus system was great! Whenever we planned a tour, they picked us up at the hotel as a courtesy and took us to the meeting spot. We were near MANY convenient places to eat and had a nice variety of cultural foods throughout the week. I recommend this hotel/area of San Francisco! The price was definitely right for us.

Nice hotel but in a part of town that was not very central

The first room was awful, but the hotel was very accomodating about upgrading us to a suite. The first room was horrible. This is an old hotel, rich in history and charm, but along with the history you also get creaking floors and thin walls. If you don't mind exchanging old world charm for modern amenities this is the place for you.

Location was good, next to the central bus lines. Easy to get around. A Mel's next door, and parking in the backyard. Breakfast was OK, but nothing more. Would stay again.

At first, one of the front desk people said I couldn't check in early (I had arrived at about 8AM) and would have to wait till after 3pm. However, after explaining the situation (I had pre-arranged a college tour in the morning and had to get there ASAP), another counter person checked me into a room that was already cleaned and ready for my disposal. I was able to get to the college tour on time without much delay. The hotel is about six or seven blocks away from Union Square, and there is a MUNI bus stop right in front. Tons of restaurants nearby, and the Mel's diner downstairs is open late.

We enjoyed our short stay at The Opal!!!!!! The staff were very helpful. Our car was secure. We were close to public transportation. The 24 hours we were in San Fransico were jam packed with tourist things. The staff heped us enjoy as much as we could in those short hours.

something missing during the breakfast, there was no eggs, a few tables and it was in a very little room and it's stop at 9am, it's too early

The staffwas excellent. Everything else, the room smelt like the sewer, there was the smell of pot in the hallways, carpet was dirty, rooms were tiny. I had a miserable experience here. The staff was friendly but not enough to make up for the awful smell in the room, the sad bathrooms, the smell of pot in the hallways, the dank and dirty carpets.

One of the best budget hotels I have ever stayed. Cons: 1. The location is not that great, lot of seedy characters during the night. 2. Not much to write about the Free continental breakfast. Bagesl, bread toast, cereal, juice and coffee.

The room we were given had a faulty toilet in an adjacent room going off every 15 seconds. could not sleep. Hotel personal knew of problem when they finally came to my room, desk person said they were not going to fix or even find the problem. Manager refused to see for himself or acknowledge my complaint and avoided the front desk when I went down. Would have refunded my money right then as I packed up but desk girl discovered I went through travel website they said the refund was my problem.

I stayed at the Opal according to some decent reviews from other Travelocity members. What were you guys thinking? This place is a dump! The room was SOOOO tiny, my husband and I couldn't get around each other to change our clothes! The bathroom was literally closet sized and the bed was the most uncomfortable thing I had to endure! I agree with other travelers...I asked why this fee wasn't either given to us upon reservation or included in the room bill, my answer was "This is San Francisco. You always pay for parking." Don't walk behind this hotel if you're alone. Sketchy to say the least. Overall, just don't stay here! It was terrible!!!!

SF can be an expensive city to visit, however staying here at the Opal saved us these expenses. Very close to many of SF's public transit systems. Tons of places to eat at and many open late or 24 hours. Hotel rooms were decent, we stayed in what seemed to be an addition, and room 110 was pretty large with 2 double beds, quite, comfy beds, weak water pressure & coffee 24 hours a day in lobby. Bring your own toiletries though, none provided for guest. Safe area, close to many things, cabs are reliable, bout $40 with tip from airport.

It was very economical. The neighborhood is a little sketchy.

Older building that is kept up well. Rooms were a nice size with tiny bathrooms. Avoid room 214, as it is above a restaurant that stays open until 4am. Great value for an expensive city. Parking is extra(AAA discount)

Painless check-in. I first thought parking was too expensive at 25/day, but that is comparable to other big cities. I would forego the car on my next visit and just walk except for maybe a day rental to visit wine country. Staff were fabulous. Not only did they let me play their beautiful grand piano, they encouraged me to come back for another session. Complimentary breakfast was light but quite well kept, well serviced.Housekeeper was very accomodating to my schedule and very friendly. This place is a hidden jewel. If you want the fanciest of places go elsewhere, but the value, the staff, and even the other guests made this a great choice for me. --djps. Only downside was that at checkout a printer problem delayed my departure minimally, probably not worth mentioning. Overall, it was a great stay!

Great spacious bedroom, however bathroom is quite small and there was no room at the sink for your toothbrush, makeup bag etc. *** Also, no where on Cheap Tickets.com does it say that parking is extra at $28.00 per night, imagine our surprise when we were faced with an add'l $100.00 charge for our stay. The hotel lowered our rate to $20.00 per night but it would have been nice to know ahead of time to budget in the money ***
