The Ocotal Beach Resort staff was not friendly at all. Anytime you enquired about anything they would refer you to the manager who was never there. The rooms were very disappointing with no hot water or working toilets. We asked to move and again we were referred to the manager who was never there. We asked for maintenance to fix the toilet and they never came. The swim pools were not clean and extremely small. You had to drive though 2 security gates to gain access to the property. The only problem with that is they never enquired who you were or what room you were in. The restaurants were not good at all. We finally moved to another resort.

Wanted a unique hotel that was quite and Costa Rican in style and right on the beach. Did not want a giant hotel on a beach. At Ocotal this is exactly what I got. Wildlife was all around us, amazing views, the perfect place to sit back and relax and close to some great touring sites. Food at the restaurant was overpriced and ok, better to go to the nearby town for some great seafood dinners at half the cost.

The accomodations were adequate for a stay on the beach and day tripping. Rooms were in drastic need of updating and repair. No headboard until day two of our stay. The room safe and closet doors were broken. The staff was friendly and responsive for the most part. The pool bar closed at 4:00 ( when everyone was arriving!)The most dissapointing part was the last day when a thundershower caused toilets to back up and the roof to leak. We sat with no electricty, wet bedding , soaked luggage for over two hours in the dark! When we called the front desk they told us they would move us to another room but only after the electricity came back on. It was too dark to pack and too late to go the bar!! When we asked for a table at the restaurant they balked at the fact that we had no reservations.To top it off, when we asked for compensation we were given NOTHING.

This was a very nice staying. The hotel brings together a hill- and beachside setting, with stunning views of the surrounding areas and ocean. Rooms are comfortable, the only negative note being a certain, sometimes strong, smell of sewage coming from the bathroom. Dining was not always up to scratch. We went off-season, and one could tell than in the days when the hotel had few guests the quality of the food tended to decline. Prices at lunch and dinner were sometimes exorbitant (around 15 dollars for really small and not particularly good salads and starters). Leave the hotel and visit the nearby town for dinner.

We stayed at this hotel in April, 2008. Our small room was on top of the hill with a fantastic view of the surrounding ocean. The room was clean, the air conditioning was adequate, and the price was reasonable. There is cable tv in the rooms, and Internet service in the lobby. The hotel serves a wonderful breakfast at its restaurant, however you can get a much better dinner at the Playas del Coco town beach area. The most important fact is that this hotel has the best diving facility in that area of the country. Wonderful competent dive staff, good shop which includes Nitrox for those certified. The local beach area and water are clean, and the snorkeling is great. There are local vendors who rent kayaks for those brave enough to fight the tricky currents outside of the area. Be careful, there are no lifeguards, and your not in Disneyland. There is also a wonderful little restaurant on the beach for drinks and lunch. So if your looking for a beautiful quiet, secluded area, with good facilities this is the place. You will need to rent a car if your going to see other areas of the country, and the driving can be tough. We spend most of our time on or around the water and did not see much of the rest of the country. That will be on our next trip, which will be sooner rather the later. Really like Costa Rica and its people, although I am a little worried about unchecked development.
