Late booking so can't complain that I was in an annex at the bollom of the car park. Did get wet walking from reception to the room. The room was very clean but all fixtures were showing their age with a number of door catches etc broken or partially replaced with old unpainted woodwork, screw holes etc still visable which added to that shabby effect. Bathroom was small but clean and functionary.Evening meal main course was well cooked though a little expensive for what it was.The best aspect of the Hotel was by far and away the staff. All were efficient, helpfull, polite and friendly. I also noticed that they were just as helpful with the very youngest of visitors and overseas guests. I would stay again but would hope to be able to book further in advance next time to get a better quality of room which I am sure exists in the main building.I think my annex had formerly been the part of the hotel reserved for smokers as there was a smell akin to weak stale smoke crossed with a slight musty damp tinge.

Highly recommended!Great, romantic weekend on a four poster bed and great breakfast. Traditional English hotel and I had a great time and only a small walk to the centre. Ignore the bad reviews, this is a lovely spot and a great place to stay!

Very helpful and courteous staff. Did not have an evening meal but the breakfast the following morning was varied, cooked nicely and cooked to order. Good fresh coffee. The room was clean and the bed comfortable.

No wireless internet (or broadband) facility. This is becoming a standard requirement in this day and age! The staff were so very friendly and helpful and even let me use their garage for my bike!

Top floor heatWe had informed the hotel of our evening arrival time(10pm), but the room appeared not to have been aired, all the windows were shut and the room appeared to us to be stifling, which made it very difficult to sleep. We did not ask for a room change, due to the lateness of the hour and tiredness after our journey. If we had been staying more than 1 night, this would have been an option & we may have seen that the hotel has better accomodation than we experienced.

This is an "old style" hotel, which we liked as part of our holiday trip through UK. The only weird think was that it there was no way to get Internet access anywhere in the near1 mile ... :-( I had to send an important mail through BTOpenZone from a restaurant The breakfast was nice, but you have to ask for strong coffee, otherwise you get really nasty brown boiled water Apart from this, everything was OK

Not up to expectationsThe hotel is tired and shabby generally although it is clean. Very noisy room at the front of the hotel overlooking the road and front garden. Had to phone the night porter at 12.15 am to ask if guests sitting outside directly under our room could stop shouting and laughing so loudly as it was impossible for my daughter to sleep. Would not stay there again.

Dated hotel, single glazing to the rooms which leads to noise problems with our particular room over looking a main road into York. Good sized rooms with lovely tall ceilings inc hairdryer, trouser press tea/coffe & plenty of biscuits. There was a small pool with towels available & a chargeable sauna. aprox 15 min walk into York or buses available outside the hotel. If you stay here ask for a room if possible away from the main road.

Excellent Hotel. Room had charm and was warm and comfortable. Staff helpful and friendly. Breakfast excellent and staff friendly and helpful. Hotel nicely situated by the racecourse and convienient for visiting York. Bus stop right outside hotel with regular services to city centre. Car parking on site. Can't fault it . We really enjoyed our stay.

The Hotel has over 300 rooms, this is only been possible by halving the roomspace in most rooms. The rooms at the 3rd floor are only reached by an extremely steep staircase with narrow steps and at the top, opening the door to the corridor shut one of the rooms off, surely a health & safety risk. the floorboards all over the hotel need screwed down and only 1/2 slice of black pudding at breakfast!!! Price of drinks also rip-off.

Great Weekend City AccommodationLocation was convenient, access by bus, 10 minutes directly from the station. Staff welcoming, facilities excellent, room comfortable & clean. We would def. stay again if we found ourselves in York for leisure.

Very friendly staff. Excellent location, nice 10 minute walk to the city centre. Room 219 was very nice 4 poster bed and a jaquzzi bath. Swimming pool just nice. Tasty breakfast. Would certainly return to the Newington

The room was nice but the decor seemed circa 1970 and the receptionist when we booked in was ok. The huge positives are the staff in the restaurant in the morning were excellent, the food was lovely with a good portion and the waitress was fantastic. The receptionist when we booked out was very pleasant. Would happily stay there again although I felt the price for one night's stay was a little high.

This room was fine for my daughter and I but would not have been suitable for anyone with mobility problems - due to lack of lift to third floor and steepness of staircase.

The room was agood size and quite clean, it was fine for the one or two night stay
