This hotel may have been a 5 star hotel in the past but it is a 3 star hotel now. I was immediately suspicious when I saw the worn carpets and noticed the “old, rundown hotel” smell. Since I paid for an upgrade to a deluxe room I assumed I was in a better part of the hotel. I specified and was given a non-smoking room but with smoking rooms on all sides I should not have bothered. As soon the rooms adjacent to me were occupied my room filled with tobacco smoke. I stay in Bangkok at least 6 times a year. I have stayed in places worse then the Montien but they never claimed to be anything better then 3 star hotels. Other negatives particular to the Montien: Now days most places in Bangkok have free wifi. The Montien charges $12 per hour for their wifi; The Montien's location is very inconvenient. It's a 20 minute drive to the skytrain and a half hour to the City Center; Though they did not disclose it when I booked my room they added a $35 charge when I had a guest in my room for a "room service" dinner. Bangkok is a city with a tremendous selection of hotels. They are building new ones all of the time. For the same amount of money you can book a much newer and far classier hotel.

This hotel is superb. Our room on level 18 overlooked the Chao Praya River and the beds were huge and comfortable. Compliment-ary bottled water was in the room. There is a fantastic Thai restauarant nearby on the river in addition to the many in house restaurants. The buffet breakfast had everything. While the hotel is "out of town" there is a hourly courtesy shuttle bus to downtown Bangkok. A late check-out - 2.00pm - was great with our flight departure at midnight. We were able to store our luggage for the afternoon while we used the shuttle bus into town. On our return we were able to shower in the gym area despite having checked out earlier. This is 5 star luxury at an amazing price.

The staff are very helpful and the size of the room is above average. But the location of the hotel is quite inconvenient, just nearby to a highway, and the areas around the hotel is not safe.

This hotel is far away from everything, eaven far from 7-11. Nice wiev, but that's all.
