The hotel exists as an adaptive reuse project in what was most recently the Tariff Building and has served at different times as the General Post Office, and a Civil War Commissary. Constructed in 1839 and designed by architect Robert Mills, the building is the second significant Federal Building constructed after the Capitol in Washington.
