Description:
Middlethorpe Hall is a William and Mary country house, built in 1699 of mellow red brick with limestone dressings, for Thomas Barlow, a master cutler from Sheffield. It was bought in the 1980s and reopened as a luxury Hotel, Restaurant and Spa in 1984, rescued from decay, caringly and lovingly restored by Historic House Hotels. In September 2008, Middle Thorpe Hall and the other two Historic House Hotels became the inalienable property of the National Trust by donation, with all profits benefiting the houses and the charity. There are ten elegant guestrooms and suites to be found in the main Hall, with further delightful guestrooms in the restored 18th Century Courtyard and cottage. Guestrooms are all en suite and furnished in a country house style, with antiques and fine prints. Middle Thorpe Spa is housed in a Grade II listed cottage, which has been carefully restored and modified to house a large indoor swimming pool, spa bath, steam room and sauna, gymnasium and three beauty treatment rooms.Middle Thorpe Hall is well known for its comfortable, luxurious atmosphere, as well as its beautifully restored walled gardens with 18th Century Dovecote, lavender walk, rolling lawns with ha-ha and parkland landscape.

Location Description:
Middle Thorpe Hall, overlooking York racecourse, is an obvious choice for the racegoer, and is only a mile and a half from York railway station and the city. York is one of Britain's most historic cities, and is still surrounded by its medieval city walls.
Dining:
The panelled dining rooms overlooking the gardens and the imaginative food, follows the hotel's theme of traditional excellence. They have been much praised in all the guidebooks, and awarded two Rosettes by the Automobile Association. The Dining Rooms also feature a well-chosen wine list reflecting quality and variety.

1 night stayvery friendly and helpful staff, forgot my shorts so could'nt try the spa, lovely grounds and a very tranquil setting with easy/quick driving access to york, WiFi in room cost £5 for 24 hrs. a very traditional old british style of hotel, dates back to 1699 but did'nt see any ghosts!!

Charming ,luxurious friendly and quirky hotel This was an absolutely charming hotel infact one of the best we have stayed in .The saff were very curteous .We booked only couple of days before with LR booked a double standard but on arrival the hotel had upgraded us to a junior suite which was lovely -full of antiques and Crabtree and Evelyn toileteries. We were situated in the courtyard which was very quaint and peaceful .The only thing that the room maybe could of had was coffee making facilites (although there was a bottle of spring water) but maybe this would ahve spoilt the antique furniture. We didnt sample the evening meal but breakfast was very good also helped with exceptional staff -again very friendly and homely nothing was too much trouble. The spa was also excellent .We would definately stay again!

A fantastic hotel with superb customer service.Booked this as a mothers day treat for my mum. Middlethorpe Hall is one of the most beautiful places I have ever stayed and their attention to detail is brilliant. They have the highest standards of customer service I have ever come across in a high quality hotel, with staff being extremely attentive but never intrusive. The kind of hotel where nothing is too much trouble. Booked it for pleasure but would use for business and pleasure. It's the kind of place you would take someone to impress them. Fantastic.

The only thing missing was tea making facilities in the room

The room we had was in the annex to the hotel and although it was a nice room it was quite small, we were offered a suite but since we had unpacked and it would still have been in the annex we declined the offer. I will make sure if I book again to stay in the main house. The hotel itself is fabulous and well kept ,the dinner was excellent. The gardens were beautifully maintained with lovely trees and plants .

Shame it could be so good.Middlethorpe Hall was very impressive, well kept and tidy. The room was in the courtyard and was clean and tidy, BUT was fully fitted out for disabled requirements. Not really the setting for a romantic birthday treat !!!!There was no kettle in the room, but facilities were provided after notifying the reception. The Spa was clean tidy and a quiet haven after a long drive. The continental breakfast consisted of cereal, toast, croissants, danish pastry and fruit in syrup, served on a window sill; there were no meats, cheeses or fresh fruit. Very basic for a hotel of this standard. We were lucky in that the breakfast(?) was included in the room rate; as many guests had to pay extra. The full cooked breakfast was nothing special and came in at an over-priced extra. Overall very poor quality and standards. The restaurant, drinks and menu were over-priced, over fussy and tried to be too grand and failed. The meal was under-cooked, the vegetables were not “al dente” but raw and the chef should stop trying to impress with fancy menu's and get back to good, well cooked and tasty food at reasonable cost.On the second night we and several other guests, with the same thoughts, dined at The Woodman just ½ mile in the village and enjoyed a perfectly cooked, well presented meal at a third of the price……Learn from that Middlethrope Hall.

Problems for the Business TravellerA beautifully kept building with lovely gardens but far from ideal for the business traveller. Rooms were ornate but cluttered and lacked practicallity (limited power sockets and very small desk space). The lack of a kettle in the room was somewhat bizarre - I wasn't going to order room service tea at five in the morning. The food was excellent but pricey. Ideal for a special meal out but not really what you want when you are trying to unwind at the end of a busy day and the unoffical dress code for dinner was quaint but mildly irritating. Staff were attentive but at times overly so - bit claustrophobic. An excellenet hotel for a weekend retreat or pampering but I wouldn't use it again for business.

Lovely position, very poor foodRooms were fine but costs for food and drink too high. Menu was very poor. Food itself was OK when it came but the service was not good. Particularly didn't like the waitresses clearing all the tables around us and setting out for breakfast when it was only 9.30 pm.

On arriving we were upgraded to the cottage suite - a fantastic experience. All of the staff were so friendly and couldn't do enough for us. A thoroughly enjoyable two night stay!

Would highly recommend this hotel. Service is discreet, efficient and friendly.Would like to see a continental breakfast included in cost of late room booking. Seems ludicrous to give discount for late room then claw it back as breakfast.

Almost everything was perfect. Guests are waited on by efficient, friendly staff who respond willingly to requests. I was able to have a cooked breakfast the second morning because the hotel sourced some veggie sausages at my request. It arrived hot and freshly cooked, not having sat on a hot plate for half an hour. I was a little disappointed to be charged £23 for the two continental breakfasts we had on our first morning. (I queried it; breakfasts are apparently more expensive if you book the room-only rate offered by this site). The gym has five pieces of equipment placed close together. OK if you are a friendly type. We thoroughly enjoyed our short stay here. This is a hotel where guests are very well looked after. Recommended.

We didnt score Value for money because we got an excellent discounted rate from laterooms.com, and therefore cannot score it in context. At the price we paid it was exceptional value for money, but if i were scoring it against the rack rate i would score it 4 out of 6. This is not a family hotel, and perhaps best kept that way. Its well kept, very nice grounds, and I would feel cheated if I had paid rack rate to find kids running around everywhere. There are no tea/coffee facilities in the room, and no iron (although there is a 2hour [chargeable] ironing service). Coupled with the cost of having tea via room service @ £5/pot, these were negative things for us. Spa is small but functional. Pool was tepid but acceptable. Cleanliness of spa not as good as hotel (grills on air vents in male changing were very dirty shows lack of attention to detail or lack of 'dedicated' cleaning staff for the spa). Steam room was out of of order, but being worked on at the time. We both had Spa treatments which were very good. Our rate did not include breakfast, so we did not score Food, we went to York in the evening to eat, 5 mins by car, so ideally located if you're happy to stay out of town a little.

Staying at Middlethorpe Hall is almost like having your own stately pile - great service and attention to detail, superb food.

A good hotel, particularly if you can get a deal like we did. Good service and facilities are a bonus - although I wouldn't stay here just to use the spa, as it is quite basic. Easy to get into the town centre. Was very impressed by the staff and their service.

First class. This individual hotel has charm, character and wonderful friendly staff. After a tortuous drive arriving at 10.30 I was a little displeased to be following the concierge 70yds down the lane to my room. But to find I has the ground floor of a cottage beatifully appointed and so cosy made up the the walk and journey. I don't usually sleep well in hotels but such was the homely nature and comfort of the room I slept like a log. Thne house and breakfast were superb. Would highly recommend to anyone on holiday, short break and businessman wanting something a little different.

Middlethorpe Hall is the perfect hotel - lovely gardens, spa, very quiet and relaxing. The staff could not be more helpful and efficient.Difficult to find a negative. The only one I can think of is at breakfast - the large orange juice dispenser (no freshly squeezed orange!)is placed on the window-sill thereby partly obscuring the view of the delightful gardens.

Ok, so there's a noisy road nearby. It's a taxi ride into town. And for someone whose idea of true luxury is to smoke a cigar by the fireside, one can't smoke indoors anywhere here. But here's a significant fact: in a world where, increasingly, hotel guests and airlines increasingly treat their customers as a target audience for further marketing opportunities, I had to specifically ask, and only at the moment I settled he bill, about whether or not I might leave a tip somewhere...The architecture is beautiful in that quietly elegant way, in the exterior and interior both. The gardens are beautiful by sunny day and in the dark after dinner and you'll have them largely to yourself (and the birds). The people who run this place have aspirations far higher than profit and boy, it shows...
