Used to be good - not anymoreOnly one of the two roms available due oberbooking but subsequently sorted out. Room was small, the counter-pane had a large stain on it and when asked to replace it, they merely took it away. For this price, I would expect aircon but "cooler" setting on the room thermostat apparently meant heating "not so hot". Small fan provided but windows would only open slightly. Bathroom stank and the toilets in the lobby were either not flushing at all or overflowing. Bar service was abysmal but Breakfast could not be faulted. Parking used to be free but now £8/day.

The only problem with the hotel is the limited parking. More limited now that they are adding 44 rooms and the parking area is smaller.

Good hotel, but a great shame about hefty car parking charge & room wreaking of stale cigarettesThe parking charge of £8 overnight is cheeky as the Mercure is fairly pricey for what it is. Similarly I was disappointed about the overwhelming smell of stale cigarette smoke in the room.This hotel could be excellent but the service was mediocre. I would needto be convinced that they had taken these concerns seriously to use the Mercure chain again.

New Wing Rooms ExcellentDo not think a Car Parking Charge of £8 per day is reasonable as rates are not cheap.Some staff at Breakfast require more training.Location very convenient for Exeter.Leisure faciilities are good.

Good hotel poorly managedLong wait at check-in due to disorganised check-in staff. Breakfast was a shambles with people waiting to be seated while tables remained free in the restaurant with empty plates piled high. Instead of clearing tables restaurant staff resorted to laying tables in the bar area. When we finally got to our table there was no cutlery, no salt or pepper and no butter. The toast was stale, the orange juice warm and the 'hot' buffet had run out. I will definitely not be recommending this hotel to a friend.

Mercure Hotel - ExeterGreat central location with well equipped rooms furnished to a decent standard. We travelled with a toddler and the room (259) was plenty large enough to accommodate her blow-up travel bed. Breakfast was really the star of the show - with friendly service ( they provided a highchair with no hassles) and a superb selection of breakfast items at the buffet, catering to all our family needs. We went down to breakfast early 8:30ish and there was no queue but shortly after that there was a queue right out of the restaurant.We used the small but adequate pool early on Sunday morning and it was nice and quiet and seemed clean and in good order. The single sex sauna inside the changing rooms was a nice touch too.The entire hotel was stylishly decorated following their latest renovations and the bar looked atmospheric in the evening.The only down side to the stay was being charged £8 for parking.

ComfortableThe Mecure Southgate was a very comfortable stay. I have no complaints about the room or the hotel. Watch out for the overnight car parking charge of £8 and there is a decidedly lack of staff at times. Especially clearing tables around the bar in the evenings and also the wait for breakfast in the morning. Otherwise this was a minor fault from the whole weekend and it will only effect you if you are generally a grumpy person.

I've scored the hotel low in terms of cleanliness, and value for money as I found that my bed had already been slept in. The receptionist did seem genuinely surprised and helped me change the sheets. The carpet clearly hadn't been vacuumed either but I was keen to get going and so I didn't report it. I think that clean bedsheets and a clean room should be the number one priority for any hotel, especially a hotel with 4 stars, and I would recommend that the Mercure Southgate address this. Other than this, the stay was fine. Not all the TV channels worked but that wasn't important to me. The hotel is well situated, the staff were relatively friendly and helpful. The entrance, bar area, and restaurant is pretty smart. I'd hope that my experience was unusual.

Customer service needs to improve!Bit of a mix up to begin with whereby the hotel did not have my booking.....whilst that may not have been their fault - they did not appear interested in trying to resolve it - I was directed to a pay service internet enabled pc and i had to retrieve my booking - meanwhile the lady on reception disappeared for 40 minutes leaving me sat there! Eventually they told me they had no rooms left of the type that I had booked and wanted an extra £40 to upgrade me! I eventually negotiated an increase of just £11 but felt that the hotel was not really interested in my custom! The room was nice though...

My Stay at Exeter I was very disappointed with the reception at the Mercure Exeter, the receptionist Gill was rude and unhelpful.. I had to call Late rooms .com to sort the problem out. The service I received from late rooms was wonderful and manged to save the day. Cath was wonderful in her approach and the resolution of the problem once I had made them aware of the difficulties I experienced.I would highly reccommend Lateroom service to anyone.

I stayed at the hotel for business. Check in was easy, car parking a bit unclear as apart from implementing an £8 per day charge, you kept having to go to reception to get a car pass to leave. This was a pain frankly and I am sure a better system could be found. The room itself was spotless, quality furnishings and bed linen and thank heavens for Air Con! I din't eat in the restaurant but if the quaility of breakfast was anything to go by, it was excellent. I would deifnatly recommend, and would use again for pleasure in the future.

My experience of staying....most unsatisfyingHaving stayed at the hotel before, I was looking forward to staying there again, after a long couple of days on the road. The receptionist was rude and quite frankly had an attitude i would not put with someone who should be behind a reception, greeting public. When i asked her a question about the internet, she was rude, patronising and when i explained that i didn't understand how it worked, she repeated exactly the same as she had previously said in teh most rude manner. The food i ordered (room service), was apparently from an old menu that shoudl have been changed in February, The chef kindly did my greek salad whcih i had originally asked for. it was nice, but so overpriced I wonder now if i was charged correctly. The room was comfortable but the shower was dirty and didn't have a proper shower head on it - by the time i came to use it it was gone midnight and it was too late to complain or call anyone about. Upon leaving the next day i asked if i could leave my car whilst i went to a meeting across the street, i was told that i could as i was having to pay for parking (whcih it doesn't mention on your website). When i returned after midday i was told that i had to pay an additional £2 as i had stayed past check out time - no one had mentioned this to me in the morning when i had asked and having spent £150 to stay at the hotel i thought that this was a cheek!! I undersatnd that you have to ask non residents to pay, but to charge residents is just outrageous in my eyes. i will not be returning to the hotel and working for a large business that woudl use hotels like yours, will not be recommending or booking our staff in the future. Thoroughly disappointed. How thigns change in 6 months.

Really poor serviceI went to this hotel for a wedding and found he service really shoddy. Reception and room service ferquently did not answer the phone! Room service was a joke - I odered a poached egg and literally that's all I got on a plate, no salt, peper, toast etc with it! There wasn't anyone manning the main bar so I had to keep finding staff in teh restaurant to get me a drink.The only good thing was the free upgrade to a newly furbished room with complimentary fudge! But the bed comprised of two singles pushed together and the mini bar was empty and it stank of paint.

Could be niceThe hotel is under going some renevation work so it was a bit untidy but I would imagine that when the work is done it will be very nice. We were in a smoking room which was very disappointing as it did smell very bad.

I have stayed at this hotel before, it's in a very good location and I would stay here again. The rooms are a little tired and the bathrooms very much in need of an update although I am aware they have built a new wing to the hotel which I would imagine would have better rooms. A bit pricey for what you get and would expect more from a 4 star hotel.

Location good, hotel averageAnother overpriced and overrated hotel with an extremely good location for anyone travelling to Exeter for business or leisure. The standard of accommodation is far less than expected, not worth paying the extra for the better rooms (same as the standard but with bath robe, cheap slippers and bottled water). My room was much smaller than expected, dusty and not cleaned thoroughly, and the TV didn't work (no radio, limited stations and poor reception). Customer service ranged from friendly to rude, everything is beige or floral, and it's unbearably hot in the rooms, whether air conditioned or wide-open windows. Good point - the in-room fridge was useful
