My husband and I enjoyed the Mercure Hotel Harbourside. The staff was kind and very helpful. The view from our balcony was beautiful with an overlook of the ocean. The shuttle bus bringing us to our tours went well. Exploring the Great Barrier Reef, via Franklin Island, by snorkling was really incredible, as was the Tjapukai (aborigine) Cultural Park. We really enjoyed learning about their culture and the lives of these extraordinary people. A little bit of warning though. Be careful of the trees by the ocean because there are green ants in them.

Across from esplanade (running path along beach). It was disgusting I had ants in my room and work my shoes the entire time as I refused to step on the carpet without them. This hotel is in desperate need of complete renovation. The carpet is so badly worn you cannot tell what color it used to be, nor what pattern it had. Additionally, I had ants in my room-all over every counter surface. The paint was peeling in sheets off the wall. The hotel's website describes this hotel as a "four star" but I would not give it more than 1.

Overall this Hotel is pretty good - spacious room with friendly service. The only real problem - I found the shower to be one of the most awful I've come across in over a year! Maybe I am fussy, but I DO appreciate being able to have a decent shower , instead of have to dance around to rinse yourself properly....

Poor service rude staff, reception and public areas untidy and not clean

A friend recommended this hotel to us and we weren't disappointed. Although the rooms are probably ready to be modernised, the staff were excellent...and then there was the food and views from the room...wow.

First room very small and old. Large room, with view when we requested a different room. Star rating did not match. First room very dated, back of the hotel. Good location for tourist. Ask for the ocean view and the updated rooms when checking in. Very large room with two double beds, great for families. Bar fridge in room, and table and chairs for breakfast eating. Three star not four. Free underground parking.

Our 10 day stay was made very comfortable due to the staff that were always friendly and helpful always taking the time to answer any questions or give suggestions. I commend them on the bus shuttle service they have always on time. The hotel surroundings were always clean and fresh it was a pleasure staying there.

null The distance from the center of Cairns is a little far.

This hotel is a bit further from the main shops and attractions in Cairns, though they do offer a free shuttle service. All rooms have big balconies - great for drying wet dive kit!

The staff was excellent, extremely helpful and friendly. They made up for any negatives about this hotel. The bed, pillows and bedding were old, uninviting; however, they were clean. Generally the hotel's room accommodations were old. The bathrooms were great; they looked like they were new. The beds, pillows, and bedding looked like they have been over used and very worn out. This is very important to us, since the prime thing we do in the hotel is sleep. Hotel lobby was okay (clean but old furniture). They ran an hourly shuttle between the hotel and the Cairns CBD (about 7 minutes), which made it convenient despite its distance from the CBD area (30 minute walk). The lobby staff was so great - extremely friendly, attentive, helpful, accommodating, and a genuine pleasure to be around.

Carpeting and general decor looking a bit tired- and the carpet a bit grubby

We had a beautiful ocean view, the rooms were clean and obviously updated, parking was easy and free!! Our room smelled like a former smoker's room, the hotel was further from downtown than we expected, being on the Esplanade. All in all, we were happy with our room, excepting the musty smoky smell. The furniture looked a little worn but the bathroom was nicely updated, for a clean, fresh, modern look. A hand-held shower fixture would have been a welcome touch at this and many of the other hotels we frequented during our Australia-New Zealand vacation. I felt this hotel was a good deal for the money and would not hesitate to recommend it to friends and family.
