Much better out there for a similar priceThe hotel is basic and it's old worldy charm is visible on the outside only. Inside everything has been gloss painted and it is in need of a full overhaul. The room was basic, but clean. The TV was meant to come with digital channels, but I only managed to get 4 channels and none had great reception. The room (115) was very noisy as it was directly above a main road. This meant it got warm as well, as opening a window increased traffic noise. I was offered and booked a wake up call when I arrived - though this never happened which means I missed breakfast so can't review the food! Would choose somewhere else next time I'm in Reading. It's a shame as it has so much potential.

A delight to stay in, 5 minutes' walk from the railway station, right in the heart of town, historic building with lots of nooks and crannies, but up-to-date facilities. Extremely helpful staff - highly recommended.

Breaking the journey from Vienna to Wales in grand style.Highly recommended for Welsh people flying in and out of Heathrow. The George has great, authentic olde worlde atmosphere, combined with state of the art facilities including completely refitted bathrooms and flat screen TVs. Location within walking distance to Reading Central Station is important for travellers with luggage, who rely on public transport. Comfortable dining room with traditional English breakfast, but highlight was drinking a pint of Boddington's in the old courtyard, after taking care of a bag of locally acquired cod & chips from around the corner. Thank you Mercure for investing in this place.

2nd stay just as good as the 1st timeThis was my 2nd stay here and once again, I was thoroughly pleased with my experience. My room was smaller than the first time I stayed, but as I was staying alone this wasn't a problem. I didn't have much contact with the daytime staff other than to check in (which was very quick and easy) but the night staff were very friendly. There was no noise at all, it was lovely! The location couldn't be better for shopping and a night out- overall I was extremely happy.

Mecure George ReadingThe only thing the hotel has going for it is acceptable value for money. Our room was clean and had the facilities you would expect. It is in the centre of Reading and is very noisey, the attepmts to double glaze the property are rubbish! Buses, People, Roadwesspers & Bin Men all kept us all awake. There is also no lift and the hotel is not disabled friendly in any way. There are no banisters up some of the stairways. Breakfast was good although they ran out of hot food and we had to wait 15 mins for more.

a pity about the lack of parking- we had to pay over £10 a night to stay in the multi-story car park across town 15 minutes away!!

Mercure George hotel ReadingBar closed at 11.30 no ice, no lemon, no food unless it was something that could be microwaved. Bathroom flooded & toilet broke in one room. TV broken in another room.

Good, but there may be better options available.A nice hotel in a good location overall. However, floorboards were quite creaky. Cleanliness was good overall except for a foreign hair I saw on the bathroom floor. Skipped breakfast because I woke up late.

Not Value for MoneyI visited Mercure Reading directly from a one night stay at Mercure Bristol. The former was not great and neither was this. Check in was haphazard and I was given a key and verbally told a number. The card opened the door but it already had someone in it. When I checked the card it had another door number written on it but the card was indeed for the room I was verbally given - confusing or what. The eating area is small and uninviting and the room overlooked a noisy pedestrian passage. I didn't eat dinner or breakfast. I could have stayed at Mal Maison cheaper and next time....I will.

Excellent locationHotel located in an excellent central location within easy reach of the station. Overall a decent quality hotel. Room was spacious and clean with a modern bathroom, nicely decorated. The bed was comfortable although pillows in the room gave me neck ache as they were very hard. Dinner in the Brasserie was OK but nothing special, although the staff were very good. The hotel also has two other restaurants in the courtyard, which I didn't try.

The George Hotel Mercure ReadingVery pleasant stay had by myself and my husband, and a good friend who we took with us for a weekend recently. The George is one of, if not the, oldest building in Reading. It still retains many of it's old coaching inn character and features. The rooms are done up in authentic and traditional decor. They are very clean and tidy and have good facilities. The costomer service was excellent, such as when my friend, who had booked a single room, found a problem with the door not locking, and so was quickly moved to a bigger and even better room at no extra cost. The traditional english breakfast was also good. Would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Lovely charming hotel full of characterWhen I arrived at the hotel I was greeted at reception by a polite man. I didn't really get to see or speak to any other members of staff whilst I was staying there. Although I think the decor in the public areas could have done with a little work, this was a very charming old hotel full of character. I had a very spacious single bedroom, complete with a big ensuite, and I couldn't fault anything about the room at all. I'm already planning my next stay here!

Would stay againThe only reason why I gave customer service a lower mark is the fact that they don't offer free wifi to hotel guests (but I think that is becoming a common thing like paying for your plastic bags in shops these days). The room was very nice and absolutely adequate for the price. Breakfast was delicious (definitely don't give it a miss). Nice and helpful staff.

Pleasant, Convenient and RecommendedI stayed here for 10 days when moving to Reading for a new job. It's very central and in my view in a slightly better location than Great Expectations (more central) and the IBIS and Novotel (nicer street). On arrival I was offered free parking in their sister hotel's car park being 2 minutes away on foot. I believe they can offer this if there are available spaces, so if booking I'd phone and ask first. My room was quiet overlooking a quadrangle rooftop -- not a great view but with plenty of daylight -- with ample space, a cosy bed and some smart furnature (rather than some common laminate stuff). Breakfast was either cooked or cereals and some ham and other bits, the former being tasty and enjoyable but maybe not the proportion of sausage and bacon (a rasher each) to other ingredients that I preper. Saying this if I had a request (smaller portion or more bacon, no egg) they did accomodate this. Tea at breakfast was from a machine and not great, but during the day they do serve proper tea from behind a bar. The coffee was a bit better. On checkout I was allowed to leave my luggage and collect it later and I was pleased that they tagged and gave me a matching number so that only the correct person could collect it. Overall I would stay here again and recommend this hotel.

great room and ace staffThe room was great and the staff even better. The bar could have been better though for such an old building.

Creaky, worn & uncomfortableThis place disappointed from the outset. Reception Staff were okya, but the staircase was sad and creaking - well past its best. Carpets loooked old and tired, ill-fitting in places and holes in some others. The corridoor to the room smelled of chemicals - vaguely paint-like but never quite sure. The Bathroom - so small (compact) that you had to climb over the toilet to get in to the shower - which was not too bad for hot water and strength, but a leak swamped the only useable 30cm squared of floorspace. The final killer blow for me was the soft, spongy bed with a duvet my Granny would have loved back in the 1970's. Doubt I'll be back any time soon.

the hotel is well located but a refurnishement has been going on and there was a lot of dust an paint smell during my stay.
