Great place to stay in Oxford Center!Staff very helpful in making sure I had a quite room.

Very small room, not well designed to maximise space. Water damaged ceiling that looked like it was about to fall in and very expensive. The positive is that it is right in the centre of town and you can walk to everything. It has parking, at an extra fee.

Previously had a satisfactory stay at this hotel but this time occupied room 202. Supposed to be a double but more suitable as a single. Bed up against the wall so could only get into bed from one side.Wall side of bed had no bedside table or shelf. Very noisey room as near the lift and lift voice "doors closing etc" audible from room.Ok during day but not when trying to sleep at night.At 5am people in room above started walking around their room and the noise from their very "squeeky" floor was transmitted through the ceiling into our room. Not what you want when you trying to sleep in between the use of the lift. Mind, just as well we were kept awake because we never received the alarm call which we had booked for 7.30am!Next moring reception staff stated lack of alarm call was unacceptable but made little comment when I complained about the lift noise.On the positive side, the bathrrom was very clean and pleasant, although smaller than the one in the single room which our son was occupying. The hotel is also very conveniently placed for many of the universities and city centre.Luckily we were only staying for one night so didn't make a fuss but having paid over a £120 (£12 for car park!) don't consider it good value. Shame because we will be staying in Oxord a lot over the next four years but will be looking for somewhere else. Strongly advise against occupying room 202.

An old building with long corridors but the rooms were pleasant. Only spoilt by an enormously thick duvet. Quite impossible to sleep - far too hot for September and no layer to take off or put on.

No food available for Vegans. Very poor selection for Vegetarians. I have been coming to this hotel since 1961. It has recently been refurbished. Although the rooms are good, the restaurant is poor. It is cold. The decor uses a cheap black ash furniture which went out of fashion about ten years ago. There are no design features which are sympathetic to Oxford. It would be more suitable at a service station which is what it reminds one of. The new layout in the foyer s not welcoming. The bar is poorly designed with screens with pictures of books on them which again are an indication that the new owners were very cost conscious. The layout is poor and the seating uncomfortable. Mercure have made a mistake and, in the long run, this will cost them. Eastgate has always been Oxford's second Hotel. Although it will always have the location, I think it will slide down the rankings until the owners find a desiger who is able to reintegrate it into Oxford's cuture and traditions, as it once was. I am sorry to be so critical but I and my family have been coming here for over 45 years and have a special sffection for the place!

The Hotel is perfecly situated for central Oxford being within a short walk of all city centre amenities yet positioned up a quiet lane close to Magdalene College. Visitors driving into Oxford will find the route to the Hotel simple and the courtyard car park extremely convenient and good value at £12 per 24hrs. The hotel reception and bar area has recently been refurbished and is very welcoming and airy. The rooms are well equipped and decorated to a high standard as are the bathrooms. My only criticism is that our particular standard double was on the small side and positioned on the 2nd floor at the rear of the building suffered from a high level of noise from the boiler ventilation ducting just below us. It clicked off at 10 pm but kicked in again at 0530hrs! It meant we couldnt have the window open even though it was a warm evening. I complained about the noise and the receptionist agreed to waive the car park charge. I got the impression this was a regular occurrence for guests staying in rooms at the rear of the hotel.I would definitely stay at this hotel again but only if I could get a room at the front overlooking the lane and colleges.

I stayed at the Eastgate on a Saturday evening in August after attending a friend's wedding in one of the nearby colleges. The price of my single room for the night (booked through Late Rooms a week ahead of time) was £109. On arrival at 12 p.m. I was allowed to check in earlier than the stated time as the hotel was not fully booked the night before and I found the staff on reception helpful, albeit that reception itself is not easy to spot when you come in. The room was an average sized single with a decent sized wardrobe and television and a large and pleasant bathroom with toiletries supplied. The bed was comfortable. The only down side, which I discovered when I awoke on the Sunday morning having got in late the night before was a faded stain on one of the bedsheets- plainly the sheets hadn't recently been changed! I am sure that, had I realised this the day before and pointed this out the staff would have ensured this was attended to- it just contributed to a slight impression that no one is really in charge on the management front, certainly over the weekend. Overall though, given the price of city centre hotels in Oxford generally, I would say that for comfort/facilities and location the Eastgate has to be one of the best bets around, especially if you book well ahead of time.

I was slightly annoyed that the hotel charged £12.50 per day for carparking. There was no reference to ths charge that I can recall from the booking information. Had I be aware of it I might not have selected it from the possibilities in Oxford. The quality of breakfast was disappointing: food was tepid and the replacement supplies to the buffet slow in appearing.

there was the fridge in my room but the drinks were not cold. I think the fridge was broken. I wanted to have a bottle of beer but I could not find a bottle opener in the room. I had a couple of tea and coffee but there was no tea spoon to stir milk or suger.I could smell of chippy oil from bathroom window in the evening and in the morning.

Tried to order room service but continually passed on to different staff - after 5 attempts gave up in disgust and went outside the hotel for food.

Reception rather surly - first impressions count.

My one over-riding impression was how slow the reception staff were at check-in and check-out. The fact that the reception counter is at a low height, and you are supposed to sit in the chairs thoughtfully provided, should be ample indication of how long you should expect to wait there.When I arrive at most hotels, I give my name, hand over credit card & ID, and get my room key in 30 seconds. It shouldn't take 5 minutes fumbling with an inadequate card-scanner unit & fumbling around in drawers for blank magnetic keys. Checkout was similarly \"relaxed\" despite people obviously being in a hurry.

The upper corridors and the room itself (especially the bathroom) smelt of smoke, which was very irritating. Couldn't find the source but perhaps it hasn't always been a non-smoking hotel.

Car parking charge at £12 per day a bit high and the price of breakfast extortionate at the price quoted of £19 per head so had a very good breakfast in a coffee shop 5 minutes away. We were on the top floor but those underneath had to put up with very noisy creaky flooring. So suggest book a top floor room. Excellent poistion for exploring the city.

The hotel is charming, the staff friendly and helpful. The location was ideal with plenty of easy access to everything I needed. However, because I was traveling on business I neededready use of the Internet. The first room I was given did not have Internet access that worked so I was moved to another room on a different floor. Whereas the first room was quite spacious and had a lovely view of a beautiful courtyard, the second room was considerably smaller and the view was a brick wall of another building. There was no comparison between the two rooms and it was quite disappointing to have to make the switch. So my opinion is that the feel one has of this hotel has very much to do with what room one receives. I would stay here again because other features I've noted were fine but I would request specific rooms to make the stay more enjoyable.

The hotel location was excellent, our room was nice and quiet, the bar was suprisingly inexpensive, but we felt 'stung' by the additional £12.50 per day parking charge which was not made clear when we booked.......
