Impressive approach, anything after downhill. After a poor stay I read the reviews again and had to agree with other comments. We also we put down the stairs, and had single beds pushed together. We had been left no soap, and after trying to ask non english speaking staff for soap, a bar had to be reteived from another room on another floor. They did hot have any on their trollies, so I guess other rooms on this floor were not supplied also. The room was clean although was in need of a face lift, and my wife was convinced that she could smell smoke in certain areas. We did not complain as we spent little time in the room, as we were attending a function away that evening, returning late. Breakfast the next morning was something else. We stay away often, and look forward to the breakfast treat. This was the worst selection, and quality we have ever encountered. The service was not much better, and the condition of the tea/coffee pots was disgraceful. I would sum this hotel up as a supurb, impressive location, that really only wants a certain clientele. ( Rif Raff, and golfers ) these groups of people usually throw money around and dont notice things like service and food quality, and like to be seen at a location like this. If you are an ordinary couple, I would suggest choosing another venue. Unfortunatly I feel Late Room.Com bookers get a lower class of service,as they just make up the numbers, and get demoted to the dungeons.

Excellent Spa & Evening meal but shabby hotel and roomsThe hotel lacked service during the day and the decor was very tired well past its best the rooms are supposed to be non smoking but my wife and i could smell stale smoke in the coridor and our bedroom on a positive note the evening meal was excellent so was the service at night the spa was also very good and the views across the golf course were very pleasant. I would stay here again once it has been re decorated

5* prices for a 2* Hotel - avoid this placeWe arrived to what presents itself on the exterior as a fantastic place. Lovely old building, beautiful grounds and friendly concierge to meet us at the door. From this point it it went downhill. The overall running of the place is well below average - more in line with a refugee's b&b than a hotel. This is not a 4 or 5 star as it claims - more like Fawlty towers without the fun.We had to take our own luggage to our room - #308. It's a long walk, smelly corridors, frayed carpet everywhere and no lift downthe 2 flights of stairs. The rooms have not been touched since the 1990s and it shows. When you pay £170 . night you don't expect peeling wallpaper, a hair-dryer that is asthmatic and no air-con. There was a wedding on in the place on the Saturday night - given the noise levels in our room, it felt like we were part of the wedding party. The wedding band played until 12:30, a disco followed until 1:45.On the good side, the restarurant food was lovely and the Spa was nice ( but overbooked by non-residents so we couldn't get massgaes or treatments as we wished - big shame). If you want a quiet, relaxing weekend in a nice environment then avoid this place at all costs.Dr JP Curley

Language BarrierThe hotel was stunning set in beautiful garden with an excellent spa/leisure club. The room was very good, (the decore was perhaps a little shabby). The service for the evening meal was excellent and the food was sensational and would definitely recommend the restaurant. However the breakfast service was a noticeable let down, unfortunately the staffs English was very poor and we were left waiting and asking time and time again for various options (which were on the menu!) so much so that my breakfast went cold. This did spoil an otherwise excellent stay. I did leave my comments on a card to the hotel and the managing director did get back to me to say they have provided the staff with extra "training", however perhaps some vouchers etc would have been a welcome enticement back to his hotel.

My Husbands 60th Birthday SurpriseLiving in Stratford upon Avon, we have always thought a night in the Welcombe Hotel would be something really special. ( With my husbands 60th Birthday on Sunday 31st May I could not think of a better hotel to wake up in) How right we were. From booking with Laterooms to phoning the hotel and arranging a special table for dinner that night, everyone was so helpful. The Room we had (133 Caroline's Room) overlooked the Italian Gardens and park, with a four poster bed and was out of this world. The Meals were superb, with my husbands dessert having Happy Birthday iced on it, we could not have wished for better, the service was faultless. My husband was thrilled with his treatments in the Spa and we both enjoyed partaking of the facilities the next morning, the pool is divine! My husband truly had a Birthday to remember. I would recommend this Hotel as being one of the finest in Warwickshire and can't wait for another special occassion to maybe go back.

Weekend in StratfordMyself and my fiance stayed at the Welcombe Spa last weekend for 1 night. The hotel is very clean, the staff are attentive, and we enjoyed the lovely views over the golf course. We stayed on a dinner B&B rate, however this only gives you £30 each so we ended up paying a further £40 for our meal. That said, the food was oustanding. Breakfast was buffet style with full english and continental selections. One downside was there was a noisy wedding party, so we had to listen to "come on eileen" and other such party classics during dinner. Bar was a bit overrun with the wedding guests so not great service there. Also, all the spa treatments were fully booked, so would recommend pre booking. All in all though, these downsides didnt spoil our stay and we would definately stay there again

Do not stop in room 214!!!!!!!!!!!We were put into room 214 which had the Kitchens Generator/air conditioning units mounted immediately outside. Reception informed me noise would stop at 10pm - it went off at 23.30 and came back on at 6am. Had we have known this we would have immediately asked to move rooms. On booking out informed reception that I was not happy with noise and reply was sorry was everything else ok? Not Good Enough for a Hotel of that quality!!

This used to be an excellent hotel, not its a good hotel. Some of the comments are not as bad as they sound, but are real given the standard prior to Menzies taking over. The location is superb, the grounds excellent, facilities good and staff good. On the negative side - room getting dated - loose wallpaper etc. ; conference attendees (Pharmacy company) were helping themselves at breakfast (even though not staying.) and getting in the way of guests; Pool had a number of "out of use" areas in the morning.

Fabulous hotel, fabulous weekend! This was a very last minute booking for a weekend to get away from it all.We booked an executive room and because there weren't any we were upgraded to a 4 poster room. The room was fantastic, the staff were friendly and the breakfast was great (lovely view over the gardens and golf course)...but to top it off the spa was divine - we will be back!

Don't think you're upgrading...Usuallly stay at a Travel Lodge? Fancy an upgrade?....sorry, this isn't it.Its a nice enough place, nice building, surroundings etc - but as a hotel it may as well be a Travel Lodge. One of the staff was very helpful when I first checked in (which took a very long time) but other than that the staff seemed disinterested, mainly non-english speaking.Astronomical prices at the bar - is that really necessary? The service was mediocre and the drink served just the same as you get in your local...Breakfast. Large buffet selection - but closer inspection its just the same cereals/hot stuff you get at most places. The waiter promptly brought tea (very weak) and cold toast...and then ignored me. Although I was there fairly early, the hot buffet looked like it had been there for some time - possibly the worst 'bacon' I've ever had and no option to ask for freshly made eggs of any description. If you are there to play golf, I'm sure this is a fine place to stay and very convenient. For anything else, believe me, Stratford has much better to offer.

Stratford get awayWe wanted a quiet, elegant hotel with a great Spa for our Easter break and that's exactly what we found. The hotel is primarily set up for the business market, but the rooms are comfortable (with very soft beds) and nicely decorated. The Spa is the highlight of this place - it' the best I've ever experienced. Clean, quiet, relaxing and full featured. There's a sauna, steam room, tepidarium, outside vitality pool, foot spas, jacuzzi and a great pool. We didn't eat at the hotel, but other guests we spoke too said the restaurant was very good, if a little pricey.

Overnight stay after wedding receptionWe enjoyed our overnight stay. We were in Henry's room, which is a lovely room, but the view was of windows to other rooms, the bathroom blind was too short and the room would have been very noisy if we had gone to bed during the wedding reception, as we were just above the function room. As it was, we enjoyed the swish surroundings, the pleasant room and the copious breakfast. Unfortunately, we did not have time to check out the spa.

Fawlty Towers experienceI thought the accommodation was overpriced given the star rating of the hotel. It was small and dingy room tucked away in an annexe of the hotel. The food was very good however the service was awful, waiters were just walking around not serving guests, even after you caught their attention. It took over an hour to get a sandwich and the espresso was undrinkable. A disappointing experience; the building is beautiful, full of character and the setting magnificent, such a shame about the service...... Don't think I will recommend this hotel.
