This is good 4-star property with a very relaxing atmosphere. This season, through 31 Oct 2008, the hotel offers all guests a complimentary mini-bus transfer (not private) from the airport to the hotel, a free guided tour of La Medina (multilingual), complimentary access to the gym and a complimentary game of bowling per stay. It gives also a 10% discount in the sauna, massage and/or hamman. (These services are located at the sister hotel, ZPP). There is an offer price for any special menu with entertainment. (SB 03/08) The building is modern and surrounded by vegetation. The hotel is located in the new city, 15 minutes? walking from the old city and all the city attractions.

Do not expect the four-star rating to be like a four-star in the U.S. I had a single room that luckily turned out to be a double bed, and not a twin-size, as was alluded to in the booking. It is in the Ville Nouvelle (newer, French-influenced quarter) but not around anything special or enticing tourist-wise. I found it convenient as a student waiting to move in at the ALIF school. Reservations cannot be canceled and refunded, so be sure that you are set on this hotel when you reserve. There is a nice cafe one block away and a simple espresso/crepe shop across the street. The old medina is only a 10 minute taxi ride (about 10-15 dh) away, so that is fairly easy to access. The single room is simple and small. The bathroom barely had hot water and it was not consistent. My drain did not work and there are no wash cloths. They did give me two sets of bath & hand towels a day, though, and the maids are nice. Women traveling alone may feel partially scrutinized, and most employees speak French or French-Arabic. Few speak English, but those at the main desk do, which eases some of the check-in issues.

The location was excellent, and except that the air conditioner did not really work very well, the room was nicely laid out. There was a chair for sitting and when a light bulb blew out and it blew out the electricity in my room, the staff were courteous and quickly had a service person come replace the bulb and have the electricity on again. The room was kept clean, too. The bathroom facilities were nice and large. it was great to have a hair dryer there, too. Lamps by the beds were a great thing, and there was CNN on tv so that news could be gotten.

I only ended up staying at the Menzeh Zalagh for one night out of my four scheduled nights in Fes. I suspect that the hotel staff are used to dealing with large tour groups (as evidenced by the many buses parked outside of the hotel), and aren't used to helping solo female travelers - getting a petit taxi, or a guide seemed nearly impossible when speaking with them. The only meal I had at the hotel was by walking over to the pizza restaurant, ordering, and sitting on the patio. My room was facing what appeared to be the air conditioning unit at the back of the hotel. I was able to see the old medina in the distance, which was lovely. I think the other rooms in the hotel had much better views - I just was stuck with a lesser one. It was also right along railroad tracks, and I was woken up by a very noisy train in the middle of the night. The room was the most spartan for a four star I've ever been in (in comparison, I've stayed in three star hotels with nicer beds, linens, and bathrooms). At any rate - do yourself a favor and upgrade to a nicer hotel or riad in Fes - you won't be disappointed, and you will definitely get your money's worth as far as comfort and ease of travel go.
