A place well worth a visitWe had a fabulous couple of days; good food, beautiful surroundings; excellent staff and the spa was a great place to relax after a day walking in Northumberland. I would highly recommend Matfen Hall.

RestaurantWe booked a table in the restaurant for 8.30pm however when we went through to eat the Restaurant Manager said he did not have it in his book (though it was on the computer). After being told we would "have to wait until 9pm" we took a seat in the bar, eventually being called to our table at 9.25pm without any real ackonwledgement for the delay. The food was excellent but slow....there appeared to be plenty of very competent young staff available however they appeared to be lacking direction which would have speeded up our meal.

Great for the priceExcellent hotel, very friendly staff that was always ready to assist. Room was clean, tidy, spacious and very comfortable. I ate in the lodges bar, only due to dress code in the main restaurant. The food and bar prices in the lodge were standard and expensive. The grounds and the view over the golf course were in perfect condition.

This is the first time we stopped at matfen hall - and we were not disappointed .very friendly staff and beautiful location of the place . The room was larger than we thought - clean and a very comfy bed . The Great hall was magnificent to see and the pool was large and not crowded despite it being school holiday time and the place being booked up - it didn`t seem over crowded with other customers staying there too .We did not dine in the hotel itself - but in the golf lodge - which was excellent and good value for money .We will be visiting again

Booked and stayed in a double room which was excellent, Although the quilt was too small for the bed which led to a \"tug of quilt war\" with my girlfriend. Every thing else first class!!

Hotel was hosting a gift fair so standards had slipped. No where to park, we wer told to park in village and walk to hotel. Room wasn,t ready but because it was busy we couldn,t get a drink or even a seat. Had dinner at hotel, service was poor, took 2 hours for 2 courses. Chef was unable to make a souffle for our desert. Went to bed hungry.Hotel is usually excellent however gift fair shoppers seemed to get priority over guests on this occassion .Manger was very concerned about our experience and promised to review.

I stayed at this hotel with my husband for a relaxing break and it did not disappoint. We particularly enjoyed the use of the leisure facilities which included the swimming pool and fire and ice experience. The hotel was set in lovely surroundings. We stayed on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis and as a result got an allocation towards dinner of £25pp. Starters and deserts are priced at around £7.50 and main meals around £22. Main meals do not come with side orders which were priced at around £2.95 each. The food was nice and well presented, the waitresses were very friendly. Drinks are expensive but this is expected for this standard of hotel. There was only one negative to the hotel. The bedroom we stayed in was like a sauna and the heating couldn't be turned down despite our requests. The windows would not stay open to make it any cooler, so we didn't get much sleep from the heat. However we would definitely stay at this hotel again and would recommend it to other people.

We managed to book this hotel at a lower price as we booked last minute. it was well worth it, the hotel was fantastic, the spa and swimming pool excellent, and the food and staff was absolutely brilliant. i would reccommend this to anyone who is looking to get away from city life into a quiet area, that isn't too far from reality! and for anyone that wants to feel special, this is the place to be!

Great value offer - £110 for dinner, bed & breakfast (for two of us). Really friendly staff, great room and superb food. Great experience

The hotel was advertised as a relaxing venue, but in reality the 'relaxing atmosphere' in the pool and spa areas was spoiled by the numbers of children. Our one night away was booked as a special treat, specifically for us to relax and enjoy some quiet time lazing around the pool, which is exactly how the hotel was depicted in the adverts. In reality it did not live up to this description. You can't offer a relaxing venue AND encourage children - it is either one or the other. For this reason we did not enjoy our time away. On the positive side, staff were excellent and food was wonderful.

Stunning grounds in lovely location. Very comfortable spacious room which had obviously been recently decorated - and this was a classic room. Large bathroom with good quality fittings.Lovely swimming pool with well appointed fitness roomComfortable drawing room and beautiful dining room . Food of high quality and well presentedVery friendly and helpful staff.

Excellent which is why we keep returning! Only problem is the restaurant can get very booked in advance, so we could only have a 7pm table.

We have a dog and the hotel were brilliant in this regard, very helpful and friendly, and we had a lovely room. The food was excellent in the library restaurant although the room breakfast was a little disappointing, but overall we enjoyed our stay immensely.Only recommendation we would make would be for a walk off the main road around the hotel.
