Much like the surrounding city of Detroit, this hotel complex is an empty shell of something that *could* be great. And it leaves so much to be desired. I hate to be so negative, but please read my entire review. The Good: The rooms were typical Marriott, nothing to get excited about, but very clean and updated. We stayed on one of the highest floors in a spacious upgrade suite with views of the water and Windsor. Everything was in working order, the linens were fresh, etc. Hotel check-in/check-out was a breeze. A+ in those aspects. Now to the BAD: 1)The layout of the hotel is very confusing. There are literally MILES of maze-like walkways leading to nowhere, minimal directional signage, vast empty space, and dark corners to get lost in (and for people to hide in)!! Many other guests seemed to be having the same problem, and on several occasions we passed people who jokingly said, "We're lost... can we just follow you?" Their frustrated expressions said it all though. 2)As far as safety goes, there was an army of security with guards posted at every entrance/exit to the hotel, and guards sprinkled all throughout the building... I guess its inevitable in downtown Detroit. While we felt relatively safe inside the hotel, it was more of a "locked-down" feeling. 3)We stayed for 1 full week, and usually the whole hotel (like 75% of it) looked like it was closed. You'll be lucky if the only little coffee stand in the building is open during your visit. Our family was looking for something to eat and we finally gave up. THERE WAS NOWHERE TO EAT! We went all through the building, floor-to-floor, passed the cheesy GM car exhibit (we were the only ones in there), and after 30 minutes we somehow ended up in a place connected to the hotel called the "Riverfront Shops". It should instead be called the "Riverfront Ghost Shops" because there were dozens of closed stores and very few shoppers. It was so strange because it was beautifully decorated for a dead mall. We turned around, *walked* back up the escalator that was turned off, retraced our steps back through the hotel maze, and we paid to take the People Mover to some restaurants a couple of BLOCKS away. Very inconvenient. OUR CONCLUSION: Now before you jump on me about bashing downtown Detroit... let me say that I would no more recommend downtown Detroit and the "RenCen" to someone visiting Detroit, than I would recommend downtown Los Angeles to a traveler in my hometown of Los Angeles -- due to the SAME problems: downtown's lack of amenities and severe isolation from the coneveniences that more populated outlying neighborhoods provide. I guess if you wanted to stay somewhere like this, you could pay a huge cab fare to take you out to civilization.... to the trendier neighborhoods with better nightlife. But take my word for it and just stay at a hotel in a more populated neighborhood, or in the suburbs if you can. You won't be missing anything, you'll have more freedom to come/go, and you'll have more dining and entertainment options.

Four of us chose to stay at this location the night prior to attending the boat show at Cobo Hall. The cost was higher than other hotels, but well worth the value in return. We truly enjoyed our stay there and are planning another weekend trip during the summer with my familiy to enjoy the outside areas. The complex has numerous options for dining, plus easy access to more options via the Detroit People Mover. We all felt safe and secure at all hours and areas that we visited. The confort and view from our room was excellent. I found that we enjoyed being in the room as much as touring the city. This place helps to make Detroit a top notch place to visit and I'm looking forward to returning to the Marriott and Detroit in a couple of months!

Hotel was clean and in an excellent location, right along the river and with a great view (at least from our room on 51). Also only a few blocks from Greek Town and right at one of the People Mover stops, so there is easy access to all the sporting arenas as well. The only real negative was that our room was near the elevator banks and we could hear the ding whenever someone got off on our floor.

The hotel and complex are big and beautiful, plenty to see and do within the complex. Restaurants have changed there is no longer a Riverview cafe or bar and the new restaurant 42 degrees north while beautiful, had some negatives including: the waitstaff was continually trying to upsell, taking away from the romance and charm; the menu was limited and the food was expensive and not prepared fresh. Volt however the new lobby bar was fun and staff was eager to please.

Awesome hotel, stunning views, incredible architecture. The room as just superb but man did it get COLD. Woke up every hour, heat on - too hot, heat goes off, room freezes. Also don't venture out beyond Greektown or COBO hall and take the people mover - just too many pan handers hitting you up if you venture too far on foot.

I felt safe and secure being in Down Town Detroit. The hotel was beautiful and huge. You can find yourself lost quickly. It was reasonable and we felt safe! The rooms were clean and smelled fine and the view was pretty looking over to Canada. Very close to everything you needed in Detroit.

The Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center is a huge hotel complex designed for big conventions and special events. The front desk personnel was efficient and friendly. When we got to our room after accessing special elevators, the room was beautiful, clean, and well appointed. Being on a higher floor allowed us to see the river and Windsor Canada. It was breathtaking at night. The bed was clean and very comfortable.

I searched long for a nice 2-day stay in downtown Detroit and felt that the Marriott Renaissance Hotel ensured us a comfortable upscale stay, compared to other nearby hotels. I felt the extra cost involved with this Marriott hotel was worth the money, guaranteeing a pleasant experience The Hotel was well-staffed, clean, secure, and inviting. Room service was fast and the food was good. The exercise facilty is nice and general attentiveness by the staff was excellent. The parking garage next door was easily accessible and secure if you perfer to park your own car. I saw other hotels in the area for less money, but they did not have good reviews and in the end it was well worth spending a few extra dollars to ensure a pleasant stay. Also the hotel is within walking distance of Forrd Field (our visit) and Comerica Park if that is your destination. I would definately stay here again and recomend it to others.

Parking was not included in the stay it cost us an extra $20, we were to have a 320 sq ft room, it was much smaller. We had to call for TPaper, there was no pool avaliable, we asked about food and was told there was nothing left opened. We trucked the kids to the casino late at night to return and our nieghbors had room service. That would have been nice to know!! Our bathtub was dirty like someone stood in it with dirty feet. Oh yeah and the waitress added an extra 10 dollars to her tip after checking my back statement

I stayed at the hotel for one night on business and I will definitely come back for pleasure. One of the best features is the downtown location, with close access to restaurants and Detroit sports and exhibition spaces. Even though I was only at the hotel for one night I made the most of it and used the fitness centers which is one of the largest I've seen in a hotel in a long time. Even the views from the gym were amazing. The hotel staff (front desk, concierge, etc) are professional. Even though it's a large hotel, the check-in process was quick and the room service in the morning arrived in a timely manner. The room was spacious and the bed very comfortable. Also, I love that they have Starbucks in the lobby which is a must before early morning meetings.

We spend the weekend at the Renaissance Center to go to the DSO, we had a marvelous time. The hotel staff was just outstanding in all their efforts.Dining at the top of the Renaissance Center as well as the River Cafe for Sunday brunch was well worth it, food was excellent. Some have wrote of Detroit Downtown as being unsafe, but its no different than Chicago or New York

There was a music festival in Detroit during my stay so most of the other guests were loud, but the location was great, and the view was perfect.

Location. Policy to not allow alcohol brought to room including cooler/bag searches. Incredible views of Detroit River and the city. Great rooftop patio/bar area with views of the city and the river. Amazing downtown location in one of the cleanest, safest parts of Detroit.
