This hotel was the worst hotel I have EVER stayed in. Because the rooms smelt like they havent been cleaned in forever, they never made the beds and the customer service was terrible. I definitely do not recommend staying 5 mins in this hotel

We love staying in Malmaison hotels and we were certainly looking forward to this one with it being the converted prison. Unfortunately we didn't get a converted prison cell but what would probably have been a govenors office at the front of the hotel. We arrived just before 3pm but the room was not ready which was disappointing. The staff however were very helpful and polite and called us when we could gain access to the room. We ate in the restaurant for dinner and we generally love the Malmaison dinner menu. Our first problem was that we ordered gin & tonics which didn't turn up and we had to request again after about 20 minutes. The steak frites which we have eaten in other Malmaisons was not up to their normal standard it was tasteless and chewy. The room was very nice however the air conditioning was not working properly so we could not cool the room down. Having said that when we mentioned this the next morning they instantly deducted 25% off the room rate but we actually would have prefered some fresh air. This has not put us off the Malmaison hotels however the Birmingham and Edinburgh hotels provided a much better overall experience.

This hotel is amazing, it has been kept as the old prison but the decor that goes with it has made it feel very comfortable! The rooms were very comfortable and a good size with lots of lovely extras. The hotel is a very short walk away from the shops, and in the centre of a square which is full of lots of places to eat. We would definitely stay here again.

Fun place to stay but not as luxe as it thinks it is!We've stayed at the Malmaison before and it's nice, and very close to the station. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We were upgraded to a cell (!), which was fun as we've previously stayed only in the new part. Rooms are modern and stylishly decorated. Downsides: minor niggles, really. Bed very hard. Pillows not very comfortable. Gap at top of curtains, and light that couldn't be turned off in bathroom, so needed eyemask to sleep as couldn't get room properly dark. Also, the annoying "Mal Life" branding is all over the place - drives me crazy! There was also a typed history of the Prison building in the desk drawer which was littered with grammatical errors - shame no one bothered to proof read it, as it was a thoughtful touch. A very good hotel - but thinks that it is top notch, which it isn't. Worth the laterooms special price but I wouldn't pay full rate for it.

Very happy overall. Only complaints would be the sink in the bathroom leaked and you couldn't open the room windows to let in fresh air.

Vegetarian optionsI was not impressed with the lack of choice for vegetarians. Three options were offered and there was a distinct lack of protein.

DivineOur stay was bliss, a real treat. The staff were friendly and down to earth. The room was lovely and the bathroom luxurious. We loved our dinner in the brasserie, can't fault it in any way. Wish we could afford to stay again really!

stay away from this hotel in summerMy room was boiling during the night with outside day temperatures around 31 degrees. Air conditioning was not working in the room and I was told there was nothing they could do.Finally I was given a fan!! at 2 AM. Imagine paying the astronomical price for that level of comfort (or discomfort)

An imaginative reworking of the prison. But the rooms are small and expensive. Lack basic furniture, like a seat to sit at the desk and use computer or write; but there simply isn't room for it. The price is luxury hotel, but the experience is not equal to that. Beware very limited parking: we were told it was all booked out already, and it's hell to drive or park in Oxford anyway. The bit of the hotel we stayed in was in an annexe, through the old exercise yard, so lots of dragging suitcases up and down stairs, and dashes across open space in the rain with no cover. Plus you need your electronic key to move around the hotel: shades of the origin of the place?

Prisoners in the 1800s never experienced this luxury!The Victorian prison building in the heart of Oxford has been converted to the very highest standards of comfort, but retaining all the original features such as the cell doors and barred windows and the metal stairways, reminiscent of the TV series Porridge. It was quite delightful, not least because it was totally unexpected. I found the mainly black decor in the public rooms severe and poorly-lit however. The coffee (and all other) facilities in the bedrooms were excellent but the coffee served in the 'exercise yard' bar was undrinkable and on that experience we chose to eat out of the hotel since it is so conveniently close to the High Street.

romantic getawayThe Malmaison Oxford castle is certainly a hotel which you would go too for some time away with a partner. It takes your breath away with its unusual setting and they have used the old prison to get the ultimate affect. Most of the rooms overlook the old courtyard and have the origional cell doors and bars on the smaller windows but they have been decorated in a luxurious style, with top end bathrooms and flat screen tv's. These rooms all lead off the origional prison levels. We stayed in a superior double which was in the new part of the building i think, but had a view of the grand entrance and the cobbled driveway leading to the hotel. We had a small verander also. If you want to go all out on luxury, then the suites are the room to go for i think but all rooms are not lacking fo anything. We checked in at 3pm and were lucky to get a car park space directly in front of the hotel. This was £20 for overnight stay. But only enough spaces for 10 cars so most had to use a public car park for the same cost but a short walk away. The check in process was lovely, as you were sat in front of the reception desks in large chairs whilst they processed our details and the man who dealt with us kindly gave us a discount card for our visit to the designer shopping in Bicester Village. We had a table booked for the restaurant and again this was a lovely atmosphere, service was quick and attentive and the food was delicious at a very fair price. For the morning we opted for breakfast delivered to our room and were very impressed. We had 2 large hampers, 1 for each of us, both laden with fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereal, and a selection of pastries, fresh orange juice & tea/coffee. All in all a wonderful hotel at the heart of Oxford, which needs to be stayed in to appreciate the building with all of its history.

prison cellhotel is fabulous, we were actually in a prison cell which was superbly decorated (it was our 40th wedding anniversary) . one member of staff showed us all round hotel before we departed and he could not have been more helpful, would recommend to anybody.

No-one paid me to say this!Absolutely no complaints about any aspect of our stay, although in an ideal world it would be cheaper, so we could do it more often. The service was excellent: very professional, helpful without being obsequious and friendly without being over-familiar. The room was comfortable to the point of luxury, without fuss. Thank goodness they have not 'themed' the place, but the prison details create an intriguing and amusing atmosphere. Dinner was very good: again excellent service, but this time very good value for money. Right in the heart of Oxford, with Real Ale pubs everywhere. Superb for our long weekend break.

Heavenly Friday in the cells My honey and I went to Oxford to see Gallows playing at the O2 academy. I wanted to stay somewhere a bit different and luxurious so that we could recover in style from a night of hardcore punk and cider. We are a fairly unusual looking couple :-)I found Malmaison on late rooms and checked against tripadvisor this looked perfect - it ticked both boxes - the old prison :-) It is very near to the station, and the entrance is stunning. The staff are friendly and helpful. We had a cell for a room - well 3 cells joined together. It was Beautiful! the bed and room was huge, the bathroom was large and impeccably clean. I was very very impressed.They called us a taxi to get to the O2 academy, after the FAB gig we made our way back to the hotel. I needed chips, we had just missed the room service end time of 11:00. Boo - I asked at the desk We were told where nearby we could find said Salty lovliness. The following day - 12:00 check out - BLISS. we left our bags with reception and went wandering around Oxford. Malmaison Staff and hotel actual were wonderful. Often the way we look means second rate service or condescension that was NOT the case in malmaison.

BrilliantI have stayed here many times, but suffer when it is full because I have to stay elsewhere, which makes me sad, so please ignore my comments and try somewhere else so that i can get in!What can I say, this place is extraordnary; wonderful service, excellent contemporary design, exquisite fittings, supremely comfortable, wonderful lighting, great food.If you like something traditional, then this probably isn't for you, but if you like something different and up to date, then you will not regret choosing this place.But do remember it is built from a converted historic building/prison so it is quirky, but wonderful. Maybe not so hot for those with problem in enclosed spaces either!Only downside, cars, mine once got stuck in ther underground car park for a month! So hey, ask to have it left outside or better still don't drive to Oxford go by train and rent a car if you need one, it will be cheaper and better for everyone on the planet.

Good experience overall, but reception can sometimes be a bit hectic, parking is expensive at £20 a day/night, & the service in both the 3rd floor bar & the brasserie could be improved, as well as the quality/price/value for money in the Brasserie, which also lacks any atmosphere. The hotel should make more use of the lovely garden in the exercise yard part of the old prison, which could be used more effectively, especially in nice weather! The room minibar was very sparcely stocked & the choice in it could be improved.Having said that I forgive the hotel overall as it is Mal, & I love Mal & Hotel du Vin hotels & will definitely stay again, but hope they will take on board the constructive criticism!

The Great Escape!!As a couple with 8 daughters between us, we required a short but much needed break!As a City Break venue or like us, a romantic escape, this place is exceptional!The concept of a prison to hotel conversion is extreme but they have executed (sorry) it in a beautiful way.The setting, in the centre of a buzzing city like Oxford, makes for a fantastic situation all round!!We will definately be repeat offenders if it means we get there again!
