I detected greatest at the RandolfAfter booking a twin room, we were taken to a double. It could have been a disaster as we went from one room to another in order to find a suitable space for me and very grown up sister. However, the staff, particularly the Concierge were fantastic; very helpful, knowledgeable and NOTHING was too much trouble. I would definitely stay there again. Highly recommend Celebratation Afternoon Tea. Breakfast is good too. There is old world charm, even in the new bits! I cannot praise the staff enough. I work in the travel industry and wish more people could be like this.

This hotel had immense, beautiful, modern,first-class rooms and an excellent location in Oxford. We got this hotel for about $200.00 a night during the height of the recession, and it was definitely worth more than what we paid. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that many items, like breakfast and internet access, were not included and ridiculously expensive. Since it is a big hotel, it also doesn't have much of a personal feel.

So nearly there My partner and I reviewed this hotel ourselves on the way home from our trip and the Randolph is a bit of a mixed bag for a 5* hotel. Our thoughts were:* Excellent concierge service* Parking £25 extra per night was pretty expensive when you have paid quite a bit for the room anyway* Decor in the lobby and reception was shabby and needed refreshing * Receptionist somewhat patronising and didn't have great English. I know I was arriving in jeans and maybe didn't look the part like some of the wealthier foreign tourists but I was still paying to stay and didn't appreicate his tone* One of the lifts wasn't working so was left with one lift. An engineer had been called but it was still out of order 24 hours later* Room was newly decorated so very nice* TV set up was grainy and for a 5* hotel in a refurbished room you expect an flat screen LCD* Bathroom was best feature - immaculate, clean, bath and separate shower* Turn down service where we were given a card and box of chocolates for our anniversary as I had mentioned this on booking* RESTAURANT food was fabulous 2AA rosette well deserved. Staff very attentive and friendly especially the younger waiters/resses who clearly took pride in their work. The decor in the restaurant is dated but the food more than makes up for thisHaving stayed in several 5* and 6* hotels around the world I am sorry but the Randolph doesn't quite merit 5* and I would class it as 4*. The staff (apart from my receptionist) are all 5* as is the restaurant food but the hotel needs some TLC to make it a true 5* qualityLocation though is excellent as you can walk around the whole of Oxford easily - just be realistic with expectations. For the price, I wouldn't stay there again - sorry.

Good but over pricedOK if you get a deal on late room but not worth the full price. Classic room was OK but fairly small. Seems to be geared up to foreign tourists looking for a bit of old England! Lunch was good but breakfast mediocre.

High expectations can disappointThe trouble with high-quality hotels is that expectations are raised. Sure, the room, though small, was well-appointed and clean; the bathroom excellent - but that's what you'd expect for a room that was between 50% and 120% more costly than anywhere else we stayed on a 6-day trip.Unfortunately, it also makes you resent the 'hidden' extras: the £2 they mingily charge for paying with a credit card; the fact that they charged £1 for the newspaper in the morning; the breakfast that would've cost an extra £20 if we'd bothered staying in; and, worst of all, the fact that WiFi wasn't free, which quite frankly is a disgrace in a hotel where you're paying this sort of tariff. So no, I won't be back.

Expectations metHaving wanted to stay at The Randolph for many years, we chose our first wedding anniversary to do so. We were not disappointed. The room was most comfortable and above all spotless. Ths reception staff were efficient and friendly without annoying assumed familiarity. The Morse bar held its own delights, friendly but not over-bearing staff, splendid choice of cocktails all well made. The restaurant was marvellous and extremely good value. All staff were pleasant and quietly efficient.Am looking forward to going again!

Historic Hotel in Center of OxfordWonderful location for touring Oxford. Traditional English Breakfast was included which was excellent. Afternoon traditional English Tea provided great break from sightseeing. One order of pastries and sandwiches was delicious and generous for two of us. Very friendly and professional staff was able to tell me that my room would be ready early. Great value for the money.

Very kind and helpful staff. Room floors creaking. Bathroom had a bad smell. The rooms are small. The location is ideal in the centre of Oxford. I had breakfast served in the room and for £ 17.50 a person very little: two croissant, a small sausage, half mushroom, half tomato one egg two slices of bacon all very disappointing.

Sunday night at The Randolph Hotel, OxfordI paid £109 for a very nice double room which I thought represented good value for money in Central Oxford on a Bank Holiday weekend. I was worried that the room might be shabby or pokey but it was neither. That price did not include breakfast but there are loads of good places to eat breakfast in Oxford.

4* at most, relying on past glory for 5* rating - small, noisy roomsHave stayed here in the past and loved it but this time was rather disappointing. Rooms were really quite small and one of the two had a very noisy generator right outside the window which kept the occupants awake half the night. Do they give the worst rooms they have to people who have booked at discounted rate through sites such as laterooms.com? Room cost was still £198 per night which is a lot for a small room with no view and noisy generator outside. We called the night before to see if by chance our rooms might be free early so we could leave our luggage there and get changed and were told that actually they were. On arrival, we were told there had been a mistake and they weren't actually ready, so we were left with nowhere to change. We asked the concierge for a restaurant recommendation and he booked us into what turned out be a distinctly average chain restaurant. They must realise that people staying in a supposedly 5* hotel require an equivalent standard restaurant. There is very little parking at the hotel, so we had to park in a reserved spot at a local NCP car park. We needed to leave at 8.30 the next morning and the car park was due to open at 7.30am but when we went to get the car it was still closed and didn't actually open till 9.00am - not actually the hotel's fault but a major pain!

Not five star My stay at this hotel was perfectly pleasant but as a five star hotel it was very dissapointing. I have had the opportunity to stay in many four star hotels for work and a handful of five star hotels and this one in no way measured up to the four star experiences I have had in the past. I room was miles from the reception though a maze of corridors and stairs and located in a ill fitting extension. Despite this long walk there was no offer from any staff to deliver our bags to our room. Despite paying £170 for the room excluding breakfast we were also charged £25 to park our car which seemed very high considering we were guests. The room well presented and clean but was freezing and we were unable to adjust the temperature as the hotel had turned off the heating for the spring - again the type of thing you expect in a budget hotel not five star. The services in the room were not arranged well. The tea station was hidden in a cupboard and there was no easy place to set it up so I had to akwardly make room for it on the desk. Equally, when we ordered our £15 bangers and mash and paid an additional £5 for the tray service - the porter had no where to lay the tray and had to again akwardly make room on the desk, pushing aside the tea station and books. Basically, it was not awful but I was not impressed and would definately not recommend it. The following night we stayed in the Gallery Hotel in Kensington rated four star and £100, a much better experience.

Excellent customer service; disappointed with room size & locationWe booked the explorer deal so probably did pay less for the room than would normally be charged, but we were extremely disappointed with the room (no 240). It felt very claustrophobic as there was no view at all (3 feet from the window was another wall with a waste pipe coming down it!!), which made the room seem quite small. Also due to the position of the room, when people walked past in the corridor outside, the floor boards were very creaky and it sounded as if somebody was trying to get into the room as the door shook!! On saying this the room was well equipped and the bed was extremely comfortable. The staff were extremely friendly and very helpful - in reception, the bar & the restaurant - and dealt with any queries very politely. We mentioned that the room felt quite cold and it was explained that as the building was listed either the heating or the air conditioning could be on and as it was supposed to be summer (May) the heating was not on. We were offered a heater which was delivered to the room promptly and was just what was needed to take the chill out of the air. Excellent location for exploring Oxford and for Morse fans there is a small collection of photos in the bar area. The explorer deal included tickets for the sight-seeing bus & a tour guide of Oxford, which were very good and well worth having. On hindsight, we should have asked to see some of the other rooms as it may be that they are of a better standard and would feel more comfortable to stay in. As it is, when we return to Oxford, we will try one of the other top hotels, which are a similar or cheaper price and just as centrally located.

Trading off its nameThe Randolph doesn't really compare to other 5 star hotels I've stayed in round the world. The service was poor, the room wasn't cleaned properly and the food was boring. The reception staff really messed up my bill when I was trying to check out. Also the spa that you have to pay extra for is very small and can only be used by a few people at a time.

Riding on past gloriesGood things: rooms are clean and you get proper eveninn turn downBad things: parking - the hotel has no free parking and charges £25 per night for valet parking - other hotels in Oxford have parking. Rooms, whilst clean, are nothing special: good size bathroom, but all old fittings and certainly no 'wow' factor. Service is a bit hit and miss - concierge (who also is in charge of valet parking operation) was always courteous, but breakfast service was painfully slow and bar staff in evening seem to be a touch grumpy and abide by strict rules (we drank in Morse Bar having come back from dinner elsewhere in town, whilst i was having an alcoholic drink, my partner was told that she couldn't have mint tea as they would only serve alcohol in the bar - 5 star hotels that i have been to elsewhere would give customer whatever they wanted!)

Great location, quality facility, reasonable priceTwo blocks from the bus terminal, two blocks to the Bodleian: couldn't ask for a better location. Booking online through LateRooms.com, the rate was under the per diem allowed by my institution. Room faced the back alley, which was nice & quiet. Best night of sleep on the trip!
