One nighter for emergency stay The hotel was adaquate for sleeping arrangements however overall it could do with a refit - which will take around 1m to do. i understand from the staff there the main attraction is the price and the fact that there is free parking next to hotel. I admit that this was an unexpected thing for me as we took a camper and were concerned about parking it on the street. Positive things were the breakfast, the lift (interesting one that), the bar prices, the parking. i will use again as these are okay for one nighter but for longer my comfort for work related stays is vert important to me

Never Again!!I have stayed at this hotel approximately 6 times in the past year with my family and never had a problem. The hotel standards have dropped so much in that time that myself and my family will never stay there again. We stayed in room 33 which had one small window with very little natural light. The bathroom was dirty, the bath was disgusting it had black and orange gunk at the bottom of it. There was no hot water around 0930 on both mornings that we stayed there. Two cold showers it was and even then you couldnt shower properly due to the positioning of the fixed shower head on the wall. The ceiling in the bathroom had paint peeling off and large rust stains all over it. The boxing around the pipes/ bath edge had exposed electrical wires that powered the shaving socket. Very dangerous when you think that we had a child with us aswell as the constant use of water around electricity. The single bed in the room had no cover for the quilt. The beds were uncomfortable. The walls had wallpaper peeling off around the windows and the amount of dust over light fittings etc was unbelievable. The TV couldnt be tuned in properly/poor picture quality. On one night we decided to try the bar. Big mistake . . . . . the bar was out of Kronenboug . . . fair enough so we decided to order 3 pints of Fosters which tasted foul (like chemicals) and had froth on top that looked liked someone had spat it. The barmen then said he couldnt carry out a refund and we would have to speak to the manager the following day. We decided to exchange them for in date bottles of Becks instead due to the amount of hassle it would cause. We tried ordering another drink this time a glass of fruit wine. The barmen said that the bottles that were on display had been there years and that he 'didnt want to poison us'!!The hotel needs a complete refurbishment. It could make a fortune due to its location and grandeur appearance. The owner/s should really sort out their priorities. It is not worth

A real GemYou cannot get better customer service at any luxury hotel than the service we recieved from the Keppel's Head Hotel. Eveyone was very customer focused and special thanks to David, who is a major reason we will return to this hotel anytime we visit Portsmouth. Rooms 10-15 are the best. You have old world charm, with great location and convenience. We cannot say enough good things about our experience at Keppels Head Hotel.

What a dump. This old fashioned hotel is in sad decline. We stayed one night and were disconcerted by the drab, shabby decor with peeling paint, peeling wall paper, peeling lino on the bathroom floor, holes in the wall of our room, dirty carpet and so forth. I needed to send an email and was told the hotel is not hooked up to the internet - no help to be had there. The lighting was awful, the lift was the kind where you open and then close two doors. It seemed safe but was scary for my daughter. The hotel front doors were heavy and hard to open and one closed smartly on to my elbow. On the plus side, the night clerk was friendly when telling me that there was no internet access, and the sheets were clean. On the other hand, the beds were not comfortable and felt tired, with springs evident. This place needs a complete overhaul but due to its location in Portsmouth, probably does not merit the investment.

Cheap and cheerful. This hotel is run down in a very noisy area but has a cetain charm, good staff and is very handy for the car ferry terminal. Do not expect much other than basic sleeping accomodation but it does have car parking and a decent breakfast except for the mushrooms ( yuk ! ) It is also very close to naval dockyard museum ( great ) and gunwharfe Keys ( excellent )

Friedly hotel at the heart of PortsmouthI really enjoyed my stay at Keppels Head.It couldn't be better situated and it is great value for money in these somewhat difficult times.Once the "ice" had been broken with staff, then everyone was very warm and welcoming.Thaks a lot!!(all the way from Western Australia)

The room number was No. 4 and was situated along a narrow corridor. The room itself was quite spacious but dark as both windows looked out onto fire escapes and brick walls. There was a small room off the side containing a single bed, bedside table and wardrobe (there was no window in this room); the bathroom was off this room and consisted of a handbasin opposite the door, a shower unit and toilet. There was a window beside the toilet which led into what appeared to be some form of air vent; the width of the bathroom was about 2'6".

Excellent Value for MoneyDon't be put off by some of these reviews, The hotel is certainly a little shabby, but faded elegance is a better description and it is clean and tidy. It is right in the Heart of historic Portsmouth and perfect for the dockyard and ferries etc. The Staff are kind and friendly. The car park is a bonus.

Good location but poor quality roomsKeppels Head Hotel is right opposite the bus and coach station. It is in a fantastic location just minutes away from Gunwharf Quays. The staff were friendly. I think it is a family owned hotel. We were served a full english breakfast. On top of that you can help yourself to croissants, pastries, yoghurt, fruits and cereals. The breakfast room was shabby but you could tell that it was a very grand room in the past. The lift is definitely archaic. It is quite scary and we used the stairs to get to our room on the third floor. Our room was clean. However the wall paper was peeling off. It is in dire need of refurbishment and renovation. The bathroom is exactly as described by other reviewers of this hotel. There was no hot water. The bathtub and toilet are very old. They were of an indescribable greenish/brownish colour. The skirting board in the bathroom/toilet was atrocious. It was coming off at places. The wood also needed a lick of paint. If the hotel was refurbished, it could become a very grand historic hotel in a fantastic location. There was a very old lady who served us breakfast in the morning. She was just great!

Old Style CharmsThe Keppel's Head is a quite typical British accomodation - old building, good position right opposite the ferry terminal and the historic shipyard. But it would definitely need to be redecorated. The staff at breakfast was very friendly and caring. A little more information about Portsmouth should be available, at least a small map of the city centre. A chance to get online, even for a small fee, should be provided as well.

Excellent friendly staff. Well placed to visit the historic dockyards, we looked out on The Warrior from our window. Outlet shopping centre, very close, which was a pleasant surprise, great shops, restaurants and cinema.

Our stay at Keppels HeadThe staff were friendly and there was always someone available on the front desk. The breakfast was delicious. The room and the communal areas were clean and tidy. However, the room was very noisy. There was only one bedside lamp and no clock in the room. There was no guest pack with details of meal times or instructions to work the television.

OAP stay 1 night.Situated on The Hard within walking distance of most of Pompeys historical ships/ Museums. I took a taxi to the Royal Marines Museum and the D-Day Museum. The hotel is in need of TLC and I hope it is a listed building or there'll soon be a block of flats there. Ceilings were about 12' high and my single room was huge. The staff were obliging, lent me a screwdriver to screw the back of the kettle plug on firmly. The breakfast was nice as was the newly decorated d/room. No Sky tv so I went to a pub next door to watch England v Germany under 21 game and have a bite to eat and a pint!I reckon good value for money.

Dated hotelNot a bad price but could certainly do with a coat of paint , only stayed in portsmouth the one night. The room was overlooking the main road which attracted alot of noise from the road and train station.

A tired Old HotelThe hotel needs a good maintenance man,no fire evacuation instuctions in my room, seal around showertray mouldy, shower curtain short so water splashed onto carpet, but the bed linen and towels were clean,a big plus was the locked at night car compound.
