Kauhale Makai, is Hawaiian for "Village By The Sea". In this case, it's an oceanfront resort. Like a village with a common meeting area, Kauhale Makai is arranged around its large park-like grounds and swimming pool. These also front the property to the ocean. The Village By The Sea is a quiet, family oriented, property, which includes a wading pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and barbecues. Kauhale Makai is comprised of two six-story buildings, with elevators, offering studio, one and two bedroom condominiums. There are shops, restaurants, golf courses, tennis courts and many of Maui's scenic attractions a short drive away. You will find that the interiors of the condominiums at Kauhale Makai have been nicely furnished. There is central air conditioning, fully equipped kitchens, cable TV, telephone, laundry facilities on site, and private lanai. Most condominiums at this Village By The Sea have ocean or mountain views, some have garden views.**Minimum 4-night stay is required or a cleaning fee will be needed at check-out**

We enjoyed our stay in condo #333 (2BR;2BA). Our friends enjoyed the 1 BR at #607. Good time; good location; and, a great place to base your travels on Maui.

This particular room had painted cinderblocks for walls, old furniture, and minimal Hawaiian ambiance, however, it was a decent place to stay boasting beach access, community gas grills, a small pool, and landscaped grounds. Our room was on the street-side of the Plumeria Building, so we got a great view of Haleakala on the left of our lanai and a slighty obstructed view of the ocean on the right. We could definately hear road noise from inside the room, but we honestly didn't notice it after the initial observation. The kitchen was clean and provided everything we needed. (Groceries were outragious, but we still saved a bundle by eating breakfast in our room every morning and the occasional dinner.) I'm sure if you request a room closer to the back of the building, they'll help you out if they can, and you'll be glad you did. Every room is privately owned, I believe, so decor and ambiance will vary significantly. This is the cheapest hotel you'll find with a full kitchen and beach access (trust me, I looked every day for two weeks). Kehei is definately the best local for booking a hotel as it is minutes away from Wailea where you'll find Makena Beach and Big Beach (think sand that feels like confectioners sugar) as well as being a beautifully scenic 20 minute drive from Lahaina (the Gatlinburg, TN of Maui). If you decide to take the LONG road trip to Hana, keep in mind that the drive and pit-stops are what you should focus on since Hana is NOT a destination in itself (we were expecting the Emerald City). Drums of the Pacific at the Hyatt Regency was a phenominal Luau (can't go wrong with free Mai Tais and the best food you'll EVER eat!)

We stayed in room 607, which is a one bedroom suite with an ocean view. (Only two bedroom suites have ocean front views.) It was very clean and nicely decorated and had a large lanai which overlooked the pool and from which you could see the ocean. The room LR had a flat screen TV and comfy rattan furniture. The table on the balcony was a bit small but still nice. However, there is no wi-fi available and they charged $39.95 per week for internet access. It's not really close to restaurants and attractions, so you will need a car, though there is a shopping center about a mile away. The service was really nice with helping us pick excursions to go on and offered a discount for most of them. They have grills there so you can grill out, but they do get busy around 5:00 ish so plan accordingly. There are rules about no talking on the lanai or on the grounds between 10 PM and 8:AM. For the most part I get that, as the noise level can carry, although if anyone was loud after 10 PM I never heard them. Our friends stayed in room 333, which is a two bedroom suite with an ocean view which was also nicely furnished. All in all, I highly recommend the Village By The Sea (Its, English name.) though, since each condo is privately owned I can only speak for the two condos that we know about.

I know there are many negatively written reviews on this property but read this one! I agree that this is NOT a top of the line resort. But, it is worth the money. My wife and I along with our two daughters (19 and 17) stayed here for a week. We did not come to Maui to sit in a room, but wanted someplace decent to stay with plenty of room for all of us. We had a two bedroom unit which fit the bill perfectly. The furniture was not top of the line and was slightly worn, but very functional and clean. All appliances were in working order. Both bedrooms had a bathroom (a must with 2 teenage girls) with plenty of hot water. The beach isn't very swim able but you can walk about a mile or so if you are a beachcomber. There aren't many people on the beach which makes for quiet walks. Would I come here again? Yes. Simply put, the money I saved staying here was better spent by enjoying the plethora of activities the island offers and still had a roomy and comfortable place to lay my head at night. Don't book here if all you plan on doing is staying at the resort. But then, why are you coming to Maui if you don't want to experience what the island has to offer......go to Florida.

Our two bedroom condo was perfect for our stay on Maui. It was a great central location for getting to many attractions. We had a wonderful view of the sand and surf and sunsets. It was a beautiful beach for walking and wading, although I did not feel comfortable swimming without a lifeguard present. The rooms were spacious and well equipped, a very pleasant atmosphere. We helped a bride get ready for her wedding there and there were lots of mirrors and good lighting for the occasion. A great place to stay!

This hotel was wonderful. The room had everything we needed and more. The bedroom was great, sheets were clean, and the bed was so comfortable. We didn't have to rent boogie boards or any water equipment, it was all in the room! The ocean view from room 207 was great. Noise level was a 0, it was as if you had no neighbors. Parking was convenient. The pool was clean and cleaned every morning. This room and hotel treated us well. We enjoyed our time in Maui.

We vacationed on Maui to explore the island, so we just needed an inexpensive place to sleep and have breakfast. The Kauhale Makai fit the bill perfectly. It's centrally located to all of the island's hiking, biking and ocean activities and close to shopping centers and LOTS of reasonably-priced local food (and fast food, if that's what you're into). The room (125, ground floor) was clean with newer appliances and a few niceties, such as two coolers and a swim mask and fins. No real ocean view, but nice to sit on the lanai in the evenings. The front-desk staff was superb, even helping us to get a prescription for glasses in California when my wife lost hers in the surf. We'd definitely stay there again.

The room we had was terrible. It was tile floors all over, and it smelled like Pinesol. We had to buy air freshener but it was only a temporary relief. There was no TV in the bedroom. The door to the bedroom was broken. The bathroom was old. The bed was old, and the sheets were ugly. We don't recommend this Resort.

i have stayed at this establishment for the pat two years. the first time was excellent. this time, everything was good except for two things: we had bed bugs and they were fumigating during the last day of our stay for a bug infestation problem. also, the phone in the room was not working. we called the management company and they said that they would send someone out but the matter was not resolved. the two ladies in the front office were very kind and helpful. they even stowed our luggage for us until the time of our flight.

The room was decent but old and very outdated, nothing matched, everything leaked and there wasn't enough dishes. It just needed updating. The location was bad. I would not stay there again, it is NOT worth the price. It wasn't horrible but it was far from great. Try the Hale Pau Hana if you want a fabulous place to stay in Maui. We stayed there before and we should have spent the extra few bucks to stay there again.

"This is our second trip to Maui, but our first time staying in Kehei. Nervous about booking our entire trip with Travel website but will definetly do it again. No problems at all. Our condo was great. Rooms 135 and 535. The view from 535 is fabulous. Was able to get a late check out day of departure. Great pool and hot tub. Will definetly be back!! Aloha."

It was clean and quiet, the staff was not very helpful to us though. The beach front was not worth going to. Its a nice place to stay, but don't expect anything but bare minimum service and anemnities.

I appreciate the value of this hotel at its price level. It has most stuffs I need for a vacation in Maui where I spend most of time out of hotel rooms. Plenty of utensil make our life easier and save us some money too.

"Pros: Great location, concierge was helpful in recommendations, had unexpected ocean view, price Cons: The whole room, furniture, and towels stank like mildew. Room was not cleaned when we arrived. Blanket was visibly unclean. Bed very uncomfortable and uneven. It's rated 2 stars and that's what you get :( We were very disappointed with this place. Maui was great and Kihei is a great location that's central to everything!"

We stayed in #209 and where pleasantly surprised how nice it really was. The entire condo was older but very comfortable. We were very close to the beaches and shopping yet we had the luxury of being in a very peaceful area. My husband and I brought along our two teenage daughters who thought that it was very nice and we all enjoyed our stay at Kauhale Makai and would definitely recommend it to anyone. We will be back.

"The place was o.k. The room was kind of dirty. I did call the condo number, and I think they cleaned some of the things. Because it is a privately owned condo, I think they have more people coming and going and less time to clean the rooms. Our Concierge was very helpful and nice. We planned different activities through him. It was definetly a big help having someone who knows the island. However, even the Concierge wasn't enough to convince me to stay there again. "My husband myself and our daughter Sara and her son Dakotah stayed in room 230.It was nice but we would have liked a 2bedroom upgrade, on day 2 one was available for $800 more, too expensive.Our view of ocean was slightly obstructed by trees. Our 5 year old grandson lived in the pool. We had a mini wedding reception in the courtyard, Loved the grill area.Seemed close to everything,ideally situated in the middle,Would stay here again, Did not know each unit was privately owned. "

"Room was clean, but dumpy. Location was excellent. Bed was ""prestressed"" and linens were thread bare. Cleaning staff did not speak english and one Russian girl snapped my head off when I asked for a roll of toilet paper. I had to go buy my own. The room had a great view, and was clean, but the furniture looked and felt like it came from garage sales of from the side of the road with a ""free"" sign on it. The kitchen was functional, but again, most of the utensils probably came from a thrift store or flea market. And the internet service was exspensive, like $X for just a few days."
