The James has a great location, which I knew from staying there before, but their service on a sold out weekend surpassed all expectations. I booked a room on Orbitz after being told they were sold out. At check-in, I was upgraded to a suite without asking. The room was perfect. Going out to dinner, my girlfriend and I were late so the hotel took us there with the house car, a clean Audi SUV, again without asking. The next day, the front desk staff handed me an umbrella to use for the day, not asking. That night the valet drove us to the fireworks in the house car. Room service breakfast was on time, delicious, and not too overpriced for a hotel of this caliber. Checkout was seamless with my car waiting. Overnight valet was a little pricey, but the level of attentiveness more than made up for that. Dissappointed the spa was closed on the 4th, but concierge went to a local drugstore and picked up items that we forgot. Amazing, friendly staff, with perfect level of service.

My fiance and I stayed at The James over the weekend, and we cannot say enough good things about our experience there. The staff was incredible; very polite, helpful, friendly and knowledgable. The room had a well stocked mini bar, and the beds were VERY comfortable. The entire hotel is immaculately clean, and everything is very modern. The restaurant was amazing! The steaks, some of the best we've ever had. The bar (and bartender) in the hotel lounge was fabulous. The Diego Mojito is a MUST TRY. We did not make our way to the J Bar, but I am certain it is just as great as everything else. The location was very good as well, close to everything, and walking distance to Navy Pier, which is worth checking out. My only regret is that we didn't have a longer stay there. We will definitely go back. Some Tips: * If you would like to dine at the hotel restaurant (Primehouse) on a Friday or Saturday night, make a reservation, and ask your waiter for a tour of their dry aging room downstairs, very interesting! *Take advantage of the knowledge of the hotel staff, they can make great recommendations for anything from where to eat to what to see and the best way to get where you're going. *If you are looking for a fun place to have a few cocktails and want to wander the neighborhood, check out the Dirty Martini at 23 W. Hubbard St. The drink list is extensive and the staff is friendly. The food is also very good. Try the garlic hummus appetizer!

I have stayed at several hotels in Chicago. We loved the James. Everything about it was great. The rooms were perfect, the bed was comfortable, the location was terrific, and the staff was outstanding. My only complaint was minor, in that there were no air ducts or fans in the bathroom, and so it would get pretty hot. The James will always be the first place I check rates on when I go to Chicago.

Nice hotel but very small. The pictures on the site made it look much bigger. It also was not a stylish in person as it was in the pictures. Good location and friendly staff, but it left me wanting more. Ambiance was lacking. Doubt I will try it again.

I had read mixed reviews of the James on Travel online and was a little anxious about staying there, but my girls had picked it based on the location and the pictures on the website. We do a "girls' trip" every summer, me (50), and my three daughters (28, 20, 15). The hotel was fabulous - the bell captain was extremely friendly and helpful, check in was very easy and everything was exactly as we had requested. The consierge was helpful and well-informed. The room was BEAUTIFUL and very roomy. Four women sharing a bathroom is sometimes a little cramped but the bathroom in our room was spacious and very well appointed. The beds were incredibly comfortable and the room was clean and well maintained. The housekeeping staff was very competent and quiet. We had several requests (ice, more pillows, the breaker blew in the bathroom, we stopped up the toilet) and each one was addressed promptly and with great attitude. The second day, I requested ice and when the room service guy brought it up (E), I tipped him what I thought was 4. When he got back to the kitchen, he called me and told me that I had actually tipped him 53. I apologized profusely, he said no big deal and immediately brought my 50 bill back up to my room. Our last morning we went out front to look for a cab to take us to Lou Mitchell's and one of the hotel drivers offered to take us. He was friendly, well-informed and SO CUTE; can't remember his name but he was from Wisconsin. Everyone on the staff was friendly without being annoying, very competent, and extremely well trained. We will definitely stay at the James again when we return to Chicago.

Everything was great about this hotel. The staff was very nice and helpful to first timers to Chicago. The location is great because not only is it central in downtown to walk to your destinations/train/bus/taxi, but there is a Trader Joes and Starbucks right across the street for all your snacks/pick me ups. Internet room has Mac and PC which was nice. The beds were super comfortable King Sized monsters. Lighting in the room has many options. Nice carpet, not gross at all super clean. Bathroom stocked with Keihls products and organic face soaps. Bring your own toothpaste though! Negative things were that the toilet in the bathroom was constantly running. I dont know how to explain this but every 5 minutes you could hear water drain out of the toilet and back in again. We thought we could deal with it but when you come home from a long night, it can bother you. This might have been a isolated incident only to our room though.

Upon checkin, we were placed in a smoking room with 2 beds, we had requested non-smoking with a king. We immediately called the front desk and were put on hold for 10 minutes. We left the stinky room (wheezing) and went to the front desk where we were informed there were no other rooms. After some persuasion, we were given a nonsmoking room - still 2 beds. The room quality in general was poor - miniscule closet (could barely fit a weekends clothing), uncomfortable loveseat (purely decorative), there was no desk or functional seating area in the room, the bathroom was narrow and cramped. Beyond its lack of functionality, the decor was minimalistic modern - not very welcoming. The room overall had a musty, plastic odor. On a positive note, the location was good, but not good enough to warrant a second stay at this hotel.

This was my second visit to the James Hotel, stayed for three nights and once again had a fantastic time! This hotel is so nice and the staff is great, especially the doorman. Only slight inconvenience is that sometimes the front desk staff is very busy on the phone and you often times have to wait to be helped. This is my second favorite hotel in downtown Chicago and I will definitely be back! 5 stars!!!

Where we began our trip...but the Palmer House (unapologetically) messed up our reservation. My wife and I were in Chicago for a conference with 9000 attendees and needed a room in desperation. The James was welcoming and met our every need. The room was twice the size of the Hilton rooms; cleaner, and much quieter. The bathrooms are huge! Would like to come back and try the spa.

Very comfortable and spacious rooms. 24-hour gym is second to none. Cardio machines have XM and provide free earphones if you forgot to bring yours. Excellent service at the front desk and bell station. Next to ESPN Zone and many bars and restaurants if you want to walk. Only negative was the outrageous valet bill.

My husband and I stayed at the James as part of a Romantic getaway. We felt the lobby set the tone for the rest of the hotel. The lobby was starkly decorated and unwelcoming. It was very crowded and there was a line for the elevator when we checked in. The room was satisfactory but seemed to be overloaded with the usual overpriced "honor bar" items. We couldn't help but notice that there were no freebees included in the over 300 dollar price. The hotel Allergro a similar but much less expensive hotel offered a free wine and cheese hour for example. Even the refrigerator was so overstocked with overpriced substandard alcohol that we were unable to put any of our own items in it. The decor of the hotel was so overwhelmingly dark and modern that it did not feel comfortable or welcoming. The parking was also 34 dollars a day and the staff was very unhelpful and unapologetic about this. We have stayed in nicer hotels and we have also stayed in more expensive hotels but I have never had such an overwhelming feeling of being "suckered" as I did with this hotel. I was not surprised to find that the person who came up with the concept for this hotel is the owner of a high end gym. My recommendation, stay at the Allegro and save a few hundered bucks and enjoy your free wine and cheese! Plus the bar is much more fun!

Check in took about 2 minutes, the room was extremely clean, and the bath products were excellent, the bed was comfortable, service was outstanding, anything you need just call the front desk and it is there within 10 minutes. The location was awesome we walked to everything. Right across from the hotel was Trader Joes, Due Pizzeria, mexican restaurant, an asian restaurant, but our recommendation was a restaraunt right around the corner next to harley davidson about a 2 minute walk called Big Bowl. Chinese food that was delicious. Would recommend buying the go chicago card because we saved a lot of money. 1st day we walked to Palmer house and took the north tour, then road the brown line to the end not much to see but ok to ride, we got off at Diversey and ate at Pennys noodles then took el train back and walked to the Rainforest Cafe and The Hard Rock. Second Day walked to Water Tower Place and jumped on the double decker bus, went to Sears Tower and The Hancock building, all free with go chicago card. Walked to Navy Pier wanted to see black knight but all shows were sold out, walked around ate at the food court watched the fireworks at 930, then walked back to the james and picked up snacks at walgreens. 3rd Day walked to field musuem its a long walk but nice, went to Planetarium and Shedd Aquarium. All free with go chicago card very beautiful area for a picnic or just to sit out by the water. Then we jumped on the red line would not recommend, especially if you are a woman by yourself. Then took red line back and walked to Unos very good pizza if you like tomato chunks. Great Trip !!

All in all a nice hotel. I probably could have found something better for the price, especially seeing that it was a room with two fulls, I asked for a king. ALso I was charged a total of $60 for mini bar items that I never used and it took a week to get someone to fix it. Besides those two it was a nice hotel (especially if you find a deal). GReat Location and the men at the Front door were probably the nicest hotel staff I have ever met.

The hotel experience was very shiek according to my 20 yr old daughter. I liked the location and the service. Everyone was extremely helpful and courteous. I would definately stay there again.
