After seeing the lobby and people hanging out; I asked to see the room before I signed anything. I DID NOT STAY AT THE HOWARD JOHNSON HOTEL- Middletown, NY. DISGUSTING!!!! That was not a place I wanted to spend a few minuted not to mention the night. The hallways smelled like cigarette smoke and old cooking oil. The non-smoking room had ashtrays in it and smelled like smoke. The lobby was dark and people were hanging out. People were living at this hotel and it was obvious. Not a place I want to stay any time, don't believe what you see or read online. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. I rented a room at another hotel.

Very good location convenient to restaurant that gave discount on meals. No elevator to second floor. Over all was a great location with convenient restaurant next door, which gave hotel guests a discount.

we stopped for directions, and the clerk was a past employee. She said to be sure to ask for all clean bedding as some of the staff doesn't change the linens. The room was gross, stinky of smoke for a nonsmoking room. Curtains falling of the rods, closet doors off the tracks, unlevel beds, dirty bathroom, the exterior doors did not lock, so no security. Something gross on the walls, gum stuck to the beds, Dirty, filthy dump. Cant believe howard johnsons would let this place use their name.

I reserved a non-smoking and the hotel did not have any available and I was forced to cancel the reservation. I called AMEX and placed an inquiry with them to reverse the charges since I never used the room.

Front desk clerk. There was vomit in sink when I checked in that was not cleaned. Property is under renovations. Motel is minimally staffed.

We got to the hotel late. The original room was a smoking room, when we requested a non smoking. They gave us a new room, which we could not get into because it was locked from the inside. The third room, by this time we were exhausted, was the filthiest, smelly room I have ever stayed in. There was three inches of dust everywhere, there was rolling papers on the floor, there was a used band-aid in the bathtub, the bathroom was disgusting.

On Thursday check in, the staff were very helpful. [...] was particulary friendly and helpful in addition to the other female (name unknown) with directions to West Point USMA.The walk to the room, 230 was an excercise in frustration as the outside entrance doesn't have stair access at the office end. Walking the full length to find a stair, the one flight up the far side stairway finds a clear bag of trash and an empty milk carton. On entry the nonsmoking room has the stale air of smoke.Day two: On return from a day at West Point, 8p, the room has been entered (maid service I presume) as the bath mat has been neatly folded. Other than the bath mat, all soiled towels, sheets, bed are just as they were when I left at 6am.Day three: On return to the hotel at 6pm after a day at West Point. A group of 10-12 teenage to early twentys men are standing at the entry close to the office. I assume it is a smoking group but I choose to park at the far end of the building to avoid any possible confrontation. Walking up the stairs, 1 clear bag of garbage and 1 qt milk container are still present. The couple next door in 228, I've heard each and every phone call, each and every door slam on your smoke break, each rap session (some were entertaining) from 9p-2a. At 2:30am the fire alarm rousted you and me from the hotel. Now I'm sure YOU wouldn't smoke in a non-smoking room and I do hope HoJo's billed you for the emergency services responders that visited that morning. You own a lot of people a lot of things.

Under construction room smelled musty. Do like staying at place under construction. Parking and finding lobby was confusing. Not one of my better stays.

There was a big family staying next door to one of our rooms and they were being a little roudy but surprisingly, we could not hear them in our room with the TV and AC on. The room was roomy enough (we had 2 adults and 2 kids) and the beds were clean and comfortable. There was a slider out to the parking lot but there was a lock bar for the door and also surprisingly the screen door locked too so I was able to leave the slider cracked open to get fresh air. The rooms were slightly stuffy but in general clean and okay - keep in mind this is a one star hotel. I've stayed in much worse for more money. By the way, some of the hallways smelled of cigarettes but the rooms were fine. The TV and clicker worked fine. The shower had 6 spray settings. AC good. Blow dryer, iron and ironing board all good. The toilet handle stuck open sometimes just like home! There was a little table and chair and the TV spun around all the way for viewing. Walked to Perkins Restaurant and had a good breakfast the next morning. Some parking lot construction going on. In general, I was pleasantly surprised since I had read the reviews and was hoping that I would not reqret my decision. I stay in about 6 to 8 hotels a year and I would rate it as a a 2 star.

Clean. Access to car from sliding window in back. Beds not too comfortable and cheap feel to the hotel. It's a 1 star. I usually never stay in them but I had no choice as there was nothing else available. There was nothing wrong just a 1 star is a 1 star.

I like the location of the hotel. It had many stores and restaurants close by. On the website it said that they had a pool but no pool was available. When we first arrived they gave us a room that was very humid, and smelled like dirty feet and smoke, My chest began to hurt upon entering the room. The young lady at the front desk got an attitude when I requested another room. The next room was much better but the carpet wasn't clean therefore it had a mild odor as well. I would never stay at this hotel again; you need to remove them from your lodging list.

Filthy, hard to get to room, no elevator and we are handicapped, no interest high speed, and no fridge. Or kitchen facilities, smelled dirty.

Nothing at all. Dirty, dark and dangerous! this was one of the very worst hotel stays that we've ever had. The room was dirty, three out of five lamps were non functional. Despite calling the front desk three times, no one could find replacement light bulbs. There was no toilet paper in the bathroom, hairs stuck on the tub surround walls (not ours). A party took place in the guest corridor at 2:00 AM for over 45 minutes with no one from the front desk or security to break it up. I felt very vulnerable and unsafe there with my family.

The room furniture was fairly new. They did not clean the room. Leak from bathroom ceiling onto my head. Did not restock coffee in room. The parking lot is ripped up. There was no iron or ironing board in my room (they did get them for me). I was there 4 nights and they did not clean my room. The day after I informed the front desk someone put a few clean towels in the room, but they did not make the bed or vacuum. When I informed the manager upon checkout she said "we will take care of it" whatever that means.

Shopping close and easy access to highway. A lot of construction going on. Pool under refurbishment but progress appeared non-existent.

Front Desk staff was helpful but woefully inexperienced. Maid did not clean room. When we arrived and were given a room, it was occupied, as was the second room. The third room given to us was unoccupied. When we arrived back in the evening of the second day, the key did not work, We had to go to the front desk to have it corrected. When we when to the front desk, the desk clerk did not acknowledge us, but waited on another customer. A third customer horned in and was waited on, but we were not. It took 45 minutes, and several phone calls to the manager at her home, for the desk clerk to resolve the first customers problem. It took her less than 30 seconds to correct our keys. We then found that the maid had not cleaned the room. We asked for maid service, but it was never provided. We eventually had to ask for towels, and they were delivered.
