I was in Phoenix for a couple of Diamondbacks games. The proximity to the park is great. The hotel has a club on the ground floor. Music from that club was loud enough to be heard in my fourth floor room. It was not enough to keep me awake but it was certainly noticeable. It's a bit of a difficult place on weekends. The majority of the surrounding businesses were closed. We had some trouble finding a place to get some breakfast on Saturday morning.

Its cute, its quaint and its a miserable place to try to get some sleep. Seeing it on a 30 minute museum tour would have been fine. I actually prefer to stay in older hotels with more local 'flavor' than the chain hotels but the Hotel San Carlos was a nightmare. It was so small you could sit on the throne and your knees touched the opposite wall and I am only 5'6" tall. My husband was stepping out of the cold shower (hot water was nowhere to be found) and bumped the flush handle on the toilet with his knee. The tiles in the shower stall were cracked and moldy. The room was so tiny we had to take turns walking around the bed. All of the guests across the hall from us had to be evacuated during the night due to a plumbing break and the water dripped two floors down to the restaurant where we had to move to a different table because of the water coming out of the ceiling. The hot and cool air was controlled by opening and closing the vent cover...the vent cover was missing so I had to stuff a pillow in it to stop the cold air. The advertised exercise room was two blocks down in a health club where you had to pay $6 to get in, the pool was not heated and was full of leaves and crud. I could go on and on...just don't stay there. The staff was very friendly but maybe it was because they thought it was funny that we were tied into a online travel website "Good Buy" deal and couldn't check out early without paying full cost on the room.

We loved the ambiance in the hotel, it was exciting to stay at a place where Marilyn Monroe stayed and Humphry Bogart stayed. We loved the old hotel feel and felt fortunate to be able to stay there at such a reasonable rate. The room was small but comfortable, pay per view would have been nice. Over all it was a fun room with a nice view and great service! The Irish pub next door was a nice plus in our opinion! Very fun!! We had a great time! I hate fair food and I thought it would we would be able to get something to eat at the hotel, better quality, would be the pre requesit here!

The hotel was clean and the staff was great. The hotel had no parking had to park in public garage for $12.00 a day. The hotel was great except the parking was a few blocks away and cost $12.00 a day.

I found the hotel to be wonderfully charming and the staff was great! I attended a conference at the Phoenix Convention Center and the location is unbeatable -- I could walk there in 5 minutes from my hotel. The food was fantastic, although I wish they had had entertainment in the lounge, my overall dining experience was good. The rooms were smaller than the newer hotels, but I thought it just added to the charm. Although the rooms could use some updated furnishings and maybe some minor remodeling, I would definitely stay there again. Compared with the cost of the other downtown hotels I thought it was worth the money, the location is great plus it was refreshing to stay in a place with such history and charm....a nice break from your usual boring hotel.

Hotel San Carlos seemed very out dated the rooms. I was not comfortable at all you get what you pay for.

Location. Old, small. It's old; if you don't like old, don't stay there. That being said, overall it was fine. The room was small (no big deal) and the bathroom door blocked the hall. The shower could be upgraded. But it was clean, comfortable, affordable, right in the heart of downtown next to the light rail.

I attended a conference recently, and had the luck that my conference at the Phoenix Convention Center coincided with a concert a Dodge Theater and I didn't have to rent a car! The hotel is cute. It was a nice break from the conventional hotel room with all the history and old photos of Phoenix. The food was fantastic! Not at all what I expected with the low rate I paid for the room. Overall the place could use a little TLC, more counter space in the bathroom would've been nice, but I would definately stay there again. Nice staff, unbeatable rate and fantastic location and food!

Wireless internet was 802.11N with fast connection speed. Scalding hot water when any toilet was flushed on the floor. You'll like it if you are a history buff. Light switch for the roomy closet was a pull-chain. Light switch for the cramped bathroom was outside the bath, near the door to the hotel room. A sign in the shower stated that a drop in water pressure results in an immediate increase in water temperature - very difficult to shower with the constant temperature fluctuations. I felt every spring in the mattress. HVAC is central, so no thermostat in the room. Plus, if someone smokes somewhere in the hotel, the smell is distributed to all rooms. Even if you get a good rate here, you will be eaten alive with the daily parking rate of $12 to $15 per day.

The Good: The room was fine. The front desk was polite and helpful. I loved that fact that the whole place is air cooled. I liked waliking around Downtown and being able to get back to the hotel in only a few minutes. The Bad: If you go over the summer there are pool parties over the weekends that go from late afternoon to 2AM. If that's your thing they're great, though I was on the 6th floor and it sounded like a was at the pool. Also, you can hear conversations in the hallways. The water pressure in the shower was alittle iffy, if you keep your shower to 5 minutes or less you're fine. The Alright: I had a breakfast and dinner in the Copper Door Saloon. It was reasonably priced for what i ate. Downtown Phoenix is a business district, so there's not a lot open except for the pub right next door and the Arizona Center a few blocks away.

The hotel staff at the San Carlos Hotel were very friendly and I found the quiantness of the 126 room hotel to be just what I like when I visit a new city. The copper doors of the elevator were stunning and the gold and black wood trim around the entrance was very 50ish. The old carpet in the hallways need to be shampooed or replaced. The rooms were very clean and the bed was firm and comfortable. I loved the location as it was 2 blocks from the Convention Center and close to the Arizona Center where I found fabulous food.

It was very charming and I really enjoyed the historic aspect. The carpet in the room was a bit strange, and parts seemed to have plastic underneath. The hotel was rather enjoyable for its historic value, and in that they have attempted to retain most of that history. The furnishings were very attractive and the bed was very comfortable. Everything was clean. The staff was very friendly and helpful and I felt that the service was very personal. The only drawbacks to the historic nature of the hotel is that the water pressure would fluctuate when I was taking a shower and the temperature would get very hot. They actually had a sticker in the shower to warn you of this, but it was quite annoying.

I have stayed at several "Historic Hotels" around the Southwest and many were quite enjoyable. However this was the worst hotel experience I have ever had. The rooms were small, dirty (there were dirty wash clothes in the shower), and had paper thin wall. You could hear the conversations of both rooms on either side of you as if you were standing next those guests . The wardrobe was so large you could not move through the room if the doors were open. In addition to the quality of the room the hotels two restaurants and the bar were all closed by 10 pm. Nothing to do at night there. I would fully recommend staying in any of the other numerous hotels in the downtown area over this place.

The rick Shaw's outside the hotel. Very hard to find and has no parking, had to walk with luggage. Iwould not recommend this hotel. I chose this thinking it would be convenient to the place we were going to be, because we were not able to find the motel and any parking. We were 30 minutes late to the function we were attending.

The hotel website is deceiving. The roof top 'pool and sun deck' is completely covered with huge squares of canvas, hovering only a few feet above your head, and completely covered in bird droppings. If there really were a pool and sun deck, I wouldn't have minded the cockroaches so much. We checked in rather late in the evening, only to find breakfast dishes still lining the hallway of our floor. The evening staff didn't much care about any of our questions about the pool, etc. . . We immediately went online and got a room at another hotel for the remainder of our trip. The walls are thin, so don't expect a good nights sleep ~ and though the manager was lovely and very helpful, we still had to pay for our horrible nights stay. It could be a great place, given new staff, and some truth in advertising ~ and I'm sure they're sweating the new boutique hotel going in right across the street! Good luck Hotel San Carlos!

I honestly couldn't belive how small the rooms were. It was somewhat nostalgic to see how people used to live, but after I got over that, I was in a 200 sq ft room with one bed, mirrors on one engire wall and a bathroom with no tub. The closet was almost as large as the main room, which was odd. The location was great, but I don't think we will be staying there again.
