Description:
The Hotel Rex was inspired by the San Francisco art and literary salons of the 1920's and 30's. Vibrant and alive, the clubby lobby surrounds guests with distinctive period furnishings, walls of antiquarian books, and an exceptional collection of exotic objects and original portraits and murals. Literary events regularly unfold in the lobby bar, and the hotel's new Caf? Andree is an enchanting blend of a Northern California caf? and authentic French bistro. Guestrooms are decorated in a palate of Provencal colors and feature the work of local artisans as well as an impressive menu of modern amenities. The Hotel Rex has recently reopened after completing its spectacular million-dollar renovation. The Hotel Rex now accepts pets for a one time cleaning fee of $100 per stay.

The staff was very accommodating with granting early check-in, late check-out and letting us into our stored bags twice once we checked out. They even suggested a great sushi bar 2 blocks away. The rooms were a bit on the small side, but clean and housekeeping was accommodating when we left the room late on both days. However, I wanted to workout and they only offered $15/day "discounted" passes to a gym nearby. That was pricey.

Bathroom clean, food very good, robe & slippers nice touch. Air circulation in the room stale-needed more fresh air. My particular room was nice except too close to elevator heard the elevator going up and down all night. Staff was great. I would stay again just in a different room. Air circulation needs work. Felt a little stale.

Excellent somewhat olde worlde feel to the hotel; complementary drink hour in lounge area, plus occasional live music, was most enjoyable and really popular with many guests. Breakfast in adjoining Cafe was of high standard.

Stayed 3 nights in a single queen room. Smaller than a normal hotel room and no view to speak of (window facing west). Didn't feel cramped, but definitely not a place just to "hang out." Ideal place to stay if you're going to be out and about a lot because it's very close to many cool things (Union Square, Cable car, BART station). Room was clean. Didn't eat at the restaurant. Overall, a nice, quaint place to crash after seeing San Fran.

The hotel allowed us an early checkin after an overnight flight from Hawaii. Very quiet, restaurant attached had very good breakfast.

The hotel is decorated with extensive interesting art. Hanging space for clothes is limited. This is an outstanding boutique hotel with the highpoints being its location, immaculate rooms and tasteful art that is everywhere. The CD player with blues and jazz CDs is also a plus as is the free wine in the evenings. The only minor quible is that minimal space to hang your clothes. I would strongly consider staying at this hotel in the futures.

Excellent location. Huge bathroom. Well kept. Staying here was a very good choice.

What a huge disappointment! When I first checked in I was very optimistic. I was willing to overlook the fact that my shower didn't drain properly or the fact that the bedding was a major step below the major hotels because I like to stay at boutique hotels when possible. I stayed at Hotel Rex for 3 nights on business. When I returned to the hotel on my third night, at approximately 11:00PM, my key didn't work. I went down to the front desk only to find out that they had MOVED MY BAGS AND ALL OF MY PERSONAL BELONGINGS TO A DIFFERENT ROOM WITHOUT MY PERMISSION! Needless to say I was extremely upset. The manager proceeded to tell me that the room I was in was booked for a wedding party and they had no choice but to move me to another room. They claim they made several attempts to contact me however I never received a phone call, one e-mail was sent however I didn't receive it! Regardless, I am still furious over this! Never before in my 20+ years of travel have I been treated this way. They offered to comp my 3rd night, nice gesture hey! I urged the manager to comp my entire stay or I was going to fight this with AMEX to no avail, they were so pompus that they in fact billed me for my first two nights... Business travelers beware! If it happened to me, it can happen to you... Stay at the Grand Hyatt right across the street. It's cheaper and the rooms are much nicer!

Bedroom was small and and seemingly underfloor heating in bathroom made it far too hot -- in June. Air conditioning, which may have compensated, was too nosy to use. But the prodigal waste of energy annoyed me -- an inconvenient truth.

Eclectic decor reminiscent of Europe. Very courteous staff. No coffeemaker in room, small elevator. This hotel is in a great location in Union Square with quaint, old-world charm. The hotel staff was extremely friendly and courteous and my stay, although short, was very pleasant.

We couldnt believe this hotel for the money. Right in the middle of everything! Very very cute and home like feeling. And the free glass of wine in the evening was a hit. the conceire service was outstanding. Highly recommended. will stay again

"A visit to the past with elegant club mood, artsy decor, a great library/bar, and close to everything in Union Square. The staff were classy and attentive, the rooms small but well appointed, with Jazz CDs on the bedside table, comfy bed, nice bedding, large bathroom. The TV looked old, but I never turned it on. The restaurant was pretty good. I loved it and will stay again. Felt like I walked off the street back to 1940. A nice break from all the ""resorts"" that look the same. "

My wife and I spent three restful days at the Hotel Rex during our recent weekend in San Francisco. The hotel was in a great location, just a short (~10 minute) walk from the Powell St. BART station. It had easy access to other public transportation (MUNI) and the attached restaurant was very accommodating for my wife's gluten allergy. All of this for a very reasonable price downtown.

The staff and the exceptional service I received, as well as the complimentary wine every night! Rooms were a little on the small side, however the hotel staff upgraded us to larger room for no additional fee. This hotel is very classy, warm, inviting, comfortable and quaint! Exceptional staff, everyone! I've never been disappointed, but this was absolutely the best service, I've experienced yet.

"My first time in San Fran and didn't expect such small rooms. I suppose that is normal for old buildings. Lots of charm but if I had a choide to find a larger room, I would have. Also, would have chosen to NOT be on street side. Very noisy. But cute hotel. "

The hotel Rex is a great alternative to big chain hotels. It was warm and comfortable in the lobby, especially during the wine reception! Great location. Building is a bit old, but it only adds to the overall character of the hotel. We had a wonderful time and would definitely return.

The nicest hotel staff, bar none. Poor room conditions, no AC, old bedding. There are better choices for hotels in the boutique category in s.f.o. although the staff was excellent, the hotel's decor and room furnishings were lacking quality.

"Because the Hotel Rex is quite inexpensive for its superb location, I didn't expect to be as delighted as I was. The decor is lovely--beautiful colors and fabrics in the room, wonderful original art throughout the hotel, comfortable, attractive lobby and sitting area downstairs. Though the rooms are quite small, they are well organized and well appointed so that they seem larger. The bathroom is quite adequate in size and well stocked. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful. We will definitely return to the Hotel Rex!"
