We traveled to many places in Ecuador and Peru, and the only high altitude hotel that did not greet us with coca tea was Hotel Quito. Coca tea is the local remedy for altitude sickness and it worked pretty well for us. The staff was not rude, but we certainly did not feel welcome there. People of African decent should be wary, we got many dirty looks in Quito. The food was great and the room was clean, but the shower was a little more than luke-warm, the toilet seat was very worn, the room was very cold at night, and the back door to the shared balcony was insecure.

Not good, the hotel is outdated with no proper ventilation,if you get a room on the sixth floor it starts getting very noisy around 5 a.m because the restaurant and kitchen are above this floor, we moved to the third floor and it was better.

We were shocked to get a bill for over $25 for breakfast for two - especially when MANY hotels include breakfast in their room rate.

Hotel Quito had some of the friendliest, most helpful service of any hotel my wife and I have stayed in while traveling. Everyone from the front desk, the porters, the doormen and all the housekeeping staff would always greet us with a smile and hello. If we had a need, it was met promply. The views from their top floor restaurant were breathtakingly beautiful, as were the mountain views from our very spacious room. Their breakfast buffet was truly first rate. We also enjoyed a couple of good restaurants within one blocks walking distance. There is also a marvelous HUGE pool, as well as hot tub, steam bath and reasonably priced massage service offered....which was wonderful. The one and only drawback to this property is that it isn't recommended to walk far after dark, which in many places is becoming a bit more common. FINALLY.....the enormous vase in the center of the lobby with over 300 fresh roses is simply beyond belief.

The Hotel Quito is on a hill in a nice neighborhood and the view from our rooms at the quiet back of the building (2/26,3/1 and 3/9/08)was magnificent, especially when clouds suddenly ripped across the valley. (This is Quito. You're at 9000 feet. You're in the clouds.) The 320 degree view in the restaurant at the top of the building is also quite spectacular. The room itself was OK with a perfectly fine bathroom, although two of the three nights I couldn't figure out how to cool the room down enough to sleep through the night,the matress on the extra bed for my son had seen centuries of wear and housekeeping would forget to do little things like vacuuming. When we had to ask for the bottled waters normally provided, the hotel charged room service. The staff was otherwise lovely. Helpful, solicitious and really understand hospitality in a way that the people with sour faces in services in the U.S. don't. And the food in the restaurant and bar area was quite good (large buffet or menu). My main complaint -- and the reason I would recommend you never book a Saturday night there -- is that the music in the restaurant goes on till Sunday morning and we could literally feel the bass vibrating the building -- and us -- until they finally shut it down at 2 AM. This is a hotel serving lots of people leaving for the Galapagos Islands early Sunday morning. Don't plan on getting much sleep before heading for the airport. (The hotel does, though, keep whatever luggage you want to leave behind.) If you're flying into Quito, be prepared for altitude sickness and to perhaps be out of commission for a few days.
