Hotel Pulitzer - a mixed experienceThis was supposed to be a relaxed weekend break in a sumptuous room with top class service. In the end, we came away a little disappointed. We booked an executive room, which was garden facing. Be aware that a lot of the rooms in the hotel are not overly spacious, as this is a htoel fashioned from a number of old houses. The bed was super comfy and it had most things you would expect, but we found it overall a bit pricey for what you got.Front desk were very helpful and the overall feel of the hotel is good, with gardens hiden away within the hotel complex. We ordered drinks from the bar and were told we would have to take them outside ourselves and equally the few table just across the road next to the canal, which were very pretty, seemed to be off limits most of the time. Our biggest issue however was with the hotel restaurant. We had a table booked at 9pm and we received our first food at 10.15 - which was the main course, having forgotten our starters. Service was also a lttle disappointing here. We were compensated with a free bottle of wine, but only at our request. The hotel's location is great, however, in a quiet part of old Amsterdam, but within easy walk of all major sights.Do yourself a favour and eat at either Bussia (Italian) or Christophe (French) both within 5 minutes walk and both outstanding restaurants.

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at the Hotel Pulitzer. I can honestly say that if we had not stayed in the area of the city that we did, our trip to Amsterdam would not have been nearly as nice. The hotel is located in a beautiful, quiet location of Amsterdam, but is only a short walk to the craziness of the Red Light District, Warmoesstraat, Liedenseplein and Rembrandtplein. I had originally looked at hotels near Rembrandtplein and Oude Zijds because I wanted to make sure we would be close to the nightlife - I am VERY glad I didn't book there. The other areas of the city are just nowhere as nice as the Canal Ring West. The city is not very big and you can easily walk anywhere so there is no need to stay in the middle of the bars and clubs - those areas are noisy with lots of neon and cheesiness. Waking up at our hotel we were treated to a beautiful morning walk along the canals. The hotel itself was very nice. European hotel rooms tend to be on the smaller side and this one was no exception. We found a deal by booking ahead with no refunds available, so ended up paying about US$248/night including taxes and fees. For this rate I was extremely happy. For the normal rate of 300 - 400 Euros/night I would probably not have been as happy. Our room (525) seemed a little oddly situated though, so I'm sure they gave us a smaller, less desirable room as part of the deal. You get what you pay for though so I can't complain about that. The room was decorated well (large flatscreen TV, modern decor, etc), and they had nice touches like free bottles of water and stroopwaffels (yum!), comfy robes and slippers, and a personalized welcome on the TV when you arrived. The room, unfortunately, was quite warm. We would open the window to let in some fresh air as it would get stuffy, but that would shut off the air conditioning so we would need to close it again. The duvet was way too heavy for the room so we requested a lighter blanket - one was brought up right away. They shoul

Staff was great and hotel was extremely clean and elegant. Only thing I didn't like was the room size. Very small room for 5 stars. Hotel is in a great location and is very elegant. From the minute you walk in the staff is looking to help you. The hotel gives you a great first impression, however, the size of the room was very disappointing. I've been to many 5 star hotels around Europe and this was by far the smallest room. Very bad "bang for the buck". This is a 4 star hotel, definitely not a 5 just because of the room. Everything else about the hotel is great and you will leave satisfied.

We got to the airport a bit late, and it took us awhile to find the spot where we were going to meet the driver, but he waited for us, chatted with us on the way there, answered questions, cool guy..Good driver. The Hotel Staff was really helpful, they have a guy at the front desk that will help you set up anything you want to do, we gave him some ideas and he started calling for us. The room I stayed in was a single bed had a safe, mini bar, out the window was the other side of the Pulitzer, but I could see the top of a church steeple. The bathroom was really nice. The pay perview is spendy something like $25 a movie, and I was disappointed when I turned the tv up all the way and could'nt hear it from my bed. When we went down to the restaurant they took our coats and took and quick order of drinks before seating us, we didnt wait long before they brought us our drinks and menus. Im a picky eater and didnt have much id like so the waiter reccommened that we be moved to the bar part of the resturant where there was steak. Alright, The steak was something like $50 for a thick but steak. It was so good, best steak ever. 1st one didnt fill me up, so I had to order two though. For two people after some drinks it was about 200 bucks. Location was great. My dad and I stayed in Amsterdam the whole trip and the only time we didnt walk somewhere is when we were picked up and dropped off. Dam Square is about a 5 minute walk. Expensive but, Id stay again.

The concierge was fantastic and great help.([...]). He recommended great restaurants--and was very informative on other things as well. We went to Alsmeer to the world flower auction--Fabulous, and also took the train to Delft. The museums were good..not too crowded. Everyone was very friendly. The only bad thing was that at the train station--no credit cards were taken--since the tickets were quite expensive for the trips we made it was very inconvenient. The Hotel bar was also great--very helpful.

"I love the quantness and it is located perfectly a few blocks from the main tourist area, Dam Square. Just far enough to walk there but far enough to avoid the late night noise and crowds outside your hotel. The room was very nice about the same as $*/night Hilton here in America so based on that I thought it was a little over-prices at $*/night but Europe in general is expensive. But for an intimate get-away I would recommend it over a larger classic 5 star hotel."

This is my second time staying at the Pulitzer. For a significant difference in cash out-lay you can get a canal view, but, personally, I prefer the garden view. It's serene, you hear the chiming of church bells and are removed from the sounds of pedestrians who might be strolling in front of the hotel. The location is ideal, in that there's proximity to everything with-in walking/biking/tram distance, but you're not in the thick of tourist frenzy. The service is wonderful. No attitude, just down to earth friendliness. Restaurant suggestions are better left to Fodor's, Rick Steves or something other than the concierge, but I feel that's true no matter what hotel or country you're staying in. I love the Pulitzer. Rooms are comfortable and kept very clean. Great beds--down pillows. Maid service is inconspicuous. They always manage to have your room done at exactly the right time when you're away. And they leave stroopwafels on the desk! Also, water bottles. Love that. The restaurant for breakfast was pretty horrible, though. Save breakfast for one of the local cafe's. Especially the Pancake Bakery up the street.

Very clean with a professional staff. The awkward layout of the hotel. It was good for a European hotel, the staff was professional, but not very warm. Do not use the room phone for even local calls, it was 8 Euros for one call to a local cell phone. We ate breakfast one day, and the food was almost worth the 22 Euros per person, it was pretty good. The room was very nice, not super comfortable the hotel gym was poorly equipped and half (of the 4) machines were inoperative - the concierge service was very helpful in getting us reservations in clubs and restaurants.

This hotel met our expectations of a 5 Star Hotel. The staff made us feel like a old family friend. Highly Recommend and we will be back in 2009

Location was great, it was quiet clean and comfortable. Lacked in room coffee maker. The hotel was very nice, and the room was pleasant. It overlooked the canal and was very clean. There were some services but no iron in the room. The room, shower and bathroom were all relatively small, but this may be the way things are in Amsterdam. If it was a 4-star hotel, I would have been perfectly happy. But I expect a special experience in a 5-star hotel.

It was perfect! Comfortable, classy, and plush with a staff that made you feel like you had paid full price. I couldn't possibly think of a thing! Possibly the only thing nicer than a trip to Amsterdam is a trip to Amsterdam with a stay at the Pulitzer. An incredible staff who seems to strive to please all; lovely accommodations; first class service all around. I can't recommend this hotel more highly!

"We LOVED the Pulitzer: great location, superb staff. We were in the bar for some portion of every night we were there--cozy, friendly, an oasis when you want to feel at home. Met nice people there, too. Amazing breakfasts, included in rate. Heated marble floor in bathroom! Beautiful canal boat for cruising. Try ENVY down the canal for dinner!"

"I spent 9 glorious days at the Pulitzer in Amsterdam in April. Everything was perfect!! I have been to 42 countries in this world and dozens of 5 star hotels. None could exceed this hotel! The friendliness and professionalism of the staff, the room I had directly facing the Prinsengracht Canal with a large double window opening out) could not be beat! I loved my stay at this hotel so much, I am now making plans to return for a week in early July!"
