The superior double room book was very faded although we know that the Phoenicia is now finally being renovated. There was a lot of dirt in the bathroom above the window frame which also did not fit, thus allowing draughts to enter and a lot of noise from the adjoining bus station. The instructions for the in-room Internet access were still in Maltese Lira although the country switched to the Euro in January 2008. They were also very confusing and ridiculously expensive (15 euros [£15] for 25 minutes).The bar is a great location but with prices higher than central London. not a brilliant idea during the worldwide recession. Reception staff were by and large unhelpful. I would not stay again unless I was convinced service and room quality had improved across the entire hotel.

The hotel's location was an excellent jumping off point for day trips and excursions. Valletta is relatively quiet, so if you wanted night life, clubs, etc., then you had to head over to St. Julian's or Sliema. But given the island isn't that big in the first place, distances are relatively small. Right near the main bus terminal outside Valletta's city wall, rooms could be a bit noisy on that side of the hotel, but not terribly so. The hotel staff was lovely -- very helpful, accommodating, and always pleasant. The pool and gardens were gorgeous, with a great view of one of the harbors and plenty of chaise lounges and towels available. I loved this trip and had I known how wonderful Malta was, would have made it longer than the 4 nights/5 days I stayed!

This hotel can be classified as 'unassuming' luxury as everything is very discreet. For older guests more interested in strolling round the town and dining out the location is excellent. Take time to spend a few hours in the gardens that are unusually located and laid out. The staff responded well to some very challenging requests for specialst shops and theatre nbookings.

The room smelled of perspiration after the maids had cleaned. The hotel is undergoing renovations. However, the price seemed to me to be excessive (and I paid half of what is normally charged in Summer). I was in an unrenovated room. Well decorated but the bathroom really needs a total upgrade which they may be doing. Excellent position.

I was travelling on business and chose the Phoenicia because of its location in Valletta. It proved very convenient for the main commercial district of the city; in addition it was in a superb place for sightseeing when I had time left over. The hotel was a nice surprise as it still retains a lot of old world charm and has a lot more style than many of the better known hotel chains. The gardens and views are magnificent and there is a great outdoor pool area. The atmosphere and service were both very friendly and the food was first class with plenty of variety. My room was a suite with a very comfortable bedroom and separate lounge, all with great views. I would recommend the hotel for anyone who likes to get away from the big names in hotel chains but still enjoy a high standard.

I really enjoyed my stay at the Phoenicia Hotel Valetta. The piano bar was a delight. The only thing ... I ordered a lasagne for dinner (room service) and was very disappointed with it. Hardly any meat and a very sweet taste to the sauce. The rest was lovely and the staff very friendly and helpful. The internet service should be free though. It was rather expensive.

The Phoenicia Malta is the epitome of style and elegance, majestically located by the bastions of Valletta. Set in spacious gardens, it provides a calm and tranquil haven for both the business and leisure traveller. I only had the pleasure of visiting the hotel for 2 nights but was very comfortable in a roomy suite with superb views over Valletta. There was a choice of 2 restaurants which both offered a good selection of local cuisine and wines. The staff were all very friendly and available for a quick chat which was very welcoming. Strolling through the gardens to the outside heated pool area found a peaceful haven for those wanting to enjoy a good book or take in the pleasant sun.
