The hotel itself was amazing! The rooms were decorated in a fun vintage color and style with a splash of funk and class, which made us feel like we were movie stars! The not so fun surprises came when we realized that our reservation did not have a continental breakfast. We had to pay $14 dollars a person for breakfast, which wasn't cheap. We also didn't realize there were parking fees to park in Helix's parking lot. So we ended up paying $73 dollars in parking! We weren't expecting that. Other than the few oopsies, we enjoyed our stay and our room. If I was to refer this hotel to my friends I would make sure they understood all of the extra fees. I wouldn't want them to be surprised.

The staff was very accommodating. The design was unexpected but after a time I liked it. The standard king room was too small and the design made me feel that I was in a cheap hotel. We were upgraded to a larger room and it felt better. I would stay at this hotel again.

1 front desk clerk was quite rude while the other was helpful, so it's a gamble who you get. I waited an entire hour to get checked in although I arrived after 6pm. The room had NO desk at all & I had to put my laptop on the floor, there was no coffee maker in the room although a safe was provided. This hotel is 5 long blocks from the nearest metro stop & places to eat in the area are scant except whole foods grocery. For the prices they charge I would definitely go elsewhere on a future visit.

An excellent hotel if you prefer to stay slightly off the beaten path, have grown weary of the chain hotel experience, and enjoy a bit of whimsy and camp. The room was very comfortable, FUN decor, and had many extra little touches that made us feel welcome. Good location - not far from Dupont Circle (restaurants, nightlife) and an easy walk to the Metro station (red line). Highly recommend the Helix!!

What a fun and entertaining hotel! We were laughing the moment we walked in! Especially after taking a shower and putting on the leopard print bathrobes! Feels like you're in an Austin Powers movie! I wish I could have spent more time in it but was too busy doing 4th of July and touristy stuff. Great comfy bed. I just wish there was more room to get in and out of it. I hit myself in the shin with the platform several times. :o( Oh, and I wish there was an ice machine in every floor. I had to go down the 3rd floor each time I needed ice. Other than that, it was fun and in a very vibrant and hip neighborhood!

I was happily surprised. A lot of party-goers. I was pleasantly surprised. The room are bright and cool. The staff is incredibly friendly. It is located in the middle of everything that I needed. I fell in love with D.C. and this Hotel stay helped me fall in love.

This hotel is very cool - from the hot pink awning to the bright green dresser and leopard print robes, this is an awesome place. The bunk bed room is perfect for a family - separate king sized bed for the parents and bunk beds for the kids - each with own TV. Seven-eleven next door to get drinks - empty out the mini bar and put in your own! This hotel is FAR from the metro stop - don't be surprised - it is a good 15-20 minute walk. Easy to get a taxi on the corner, though, and the taxi ride to any of the main attractions is around $10. Hotel is clean and fun - champagne happy hour from 5-6 each night is a nice touch. Saw lots of families, singles, pet owners - all seemed happy!

Overall I was disappointed with the hotel. This Kimpton used to be a Howard Johnsons and was more like that than the other Kimpton hotel we stayed in, the Vintage Park in Seattle. The room was big enough and clean but when you compare this hotel to the Westin City Center which I tried to book initially but couldn't because it was sold out you see a vast difference for a comparable price. The Westin was only about 60.00 more for a three day stay and was w/i walking distance from our hotel so we went to breakfast there one morning. My God what a difference there is. The Westin is a full service hotel with very nice decor, a lovely restaurant, far more facilities and a comfortable lobby. The Helix didn't even offer baggage help and basically looked and felt like a motel which is a huge contrast to the Vintage Park in Seattle, the other Kimpton property we have used. I would compare the Helix to say a Best Western, Days Inn or the like but for prices comparable to the Westin Cith Center its well overpiced.

Though I felt extremely frustrated b/c I could not find the hotel, and they did not answer the telephone when I called to get directions, the experience was not bad. The hotel staff was friendly, rooms were vividly decorated and clean. I was given a complimentary bottle of wine for my troubles, and the room included two free breakfasts. Please be aware that they are not as close to the metro as they claim. Not a bad experience, though I hated the Austin Powers answering machine.

I took my son to D.C. for his 18th birthday, he is not easily impressed. However the staff was very friendly and helpful, the hotel was a fun place to spend the weekend, a party downstairs and a quiet comfortable room upstairs. Have you ever seen a hotel that fills a mini bar with wax lips, pez and Malibu rum, covers a bed in fur and provides you with slippers and a cheeta print robe. All we could do is laugh, which set a great tone for the trip. They have done a GREAT job from top to bottom. By the end of our weekend we were both impressed and agreed that we would return to Washington just to stay at the Helix. JOB WELL DONE!

Was in town in business and this Hotel was very close to my location. Very convienent to eating and the art galleries. Only a few blocks from the Metro. Had a very enjoyable stay at the hotel.

Funky appeal for older kids, great location for college visits and getting feel of city. Might appear tacky to those who don't like funky. No time for this, sorry, but staff upgraded room very graciously to better accommodate adult and two older kids (suite instead of one king bed).

The Helix is what happens when the Kimpton chain takes a 1950s apartment building full of small apartments and turns it into a hotel that tries too hard to be mod. The hotel's entrance door seems to consist of is automatically opening shower curtains. The "lobby" is two computer terminals occasionally staffed. When you get to the room, you find, the color scheme to be was a strange combo of orange, chartreuse and tiger. Where's the bed? Bbehind some curtains there is a king-sized (but comfortable) bed stuffed into what was once a the dining alcove -- leaving about 6 inches on either side of the bed, making the easiest access to or from the bed going over the foot of the bed. The bathroom was weird, with an almost flat sink. The basic breakfast (optional at a modest cost) was so-so.

our stay wasn't necessarily with friends, but it was a getaway. We had a house fire, were moving into temporary housing and the electricity went out on the move in date..in August...HOT. Needless to say we were frustrated. We desperately needed a place the would welcome our four-legged pooch, and my sister found the Hotel Helix....it was heaven...the rooms were funky chic, the atmosphere exceptional and the service outstanding. We had a great, relaxing AND cool night. Could not have had a better experience.

This hotel is located between three different metro lines (each 6-7 blocks away). It's a very nice location in a neighborhood. The decor is just odd (the pictures of Ken and Barbie in the room are just weird), but great service, great snacks (at decent prices) and drinks in the minibar. Despite the decor, we enjoyed our stay and would definately look into staying at a Kimpton hotel again!

Kimpton has fast become my favorite hotel chain. The Helix is no exception....well appointed with large rooms. The lounge area was not as exciting as I had hoped due to poor temperature controls (very hot) and convenience. The staff was very attentive. I did not care for the walking to hit public transportation, but I knew they were blocks away from the Metro and consider a Kimpton well worth the walk!

This boutique hotel was a great pick for its price. It has nice details throught the hotel with bright colors, pop art, and very mod decore in guest rooms. We stayed in a queen size bed room and the room size was generous. We loved every details of the hotel. The view from the hotel was nothing to mention, but we didn't care as we were there for a short travel schedule and not for a nice view from the hotel. Even the instant coffee in the guest room was excellent. Everything is well thought out and detail-oriented. I highly recommend this hotel.
