Lovely hotel seems more carefully maintained than tarted up to be modern. The bathtub is long enough for a man to stretch out in, with a great shower and huge soft towels. The pool is on the 6th floor with panoramic views of the lovely little city. Staff are friendly and helpful. The elevators are efficient--and there are enough of them--but they have (I guess) the original brass-looking doors. Opening into the lobby is the door to Django's, an "informal French restaurant" with delicious food and a classic bar--white-shirted waiters serve booze or excellent take-out coffee. Around the corner, the Racoon River Brewery has MUCH better food than one usually finds in such places, plus billards. Parking building across the street (in back) was free the whole weekend I was there and had plenty of space. The hotel is on the skywalk--especially important if you travel in winter--and within walking distance of the river park and the Botannical Center (if you can walk 20-30 minutes). During our stay, a Des Moinesian told me that there were plans to renovate the hotel. Don't touch it! That's what I say.

We were surprised the morning that we checked out with a note under our door indicating that we would be charged an additional 10.00 for parking in the garage across the street (there is no parking lot). The ticket we were given in return to use in the parking garage came up as "invalid", so we had to pay an another 8.00 to exit the garage. (The hotel later removed the 10.00 charge after I called them.) Our suite had stained carpet, wallpaper that was peeling in a couple of spots, and a very cracked sink basin. However, the room was quite clean, spacious, and the bed was very comfortable. The lobby and the rest of the hotel are gorgeous- they've really done a wonderful job of preserving all the antique beauty of the building. They just need to carry that pride over into the guest rooms.

My mother, daughter, and I stayed one night at the Hotel Fort Des Moines and all agreed that we would come back. The hotel foyer is beautiful and the staff friendly/helpful. Our hotel room was spacious (2 queen beds and a pull out sofa). My daughter slept on the pull out sofa, and although the mattress was thin, I did not get complaints from a usually picky teenager. She was happy becasue she could watch her own tv shows and my mother and I could watch or not watch the other tv in the next room. My daughter used the pool and we were the only ones at the pool. I am not sure it would be a great pool for younger swimmers- more suitable for lap swimming. There was also a hot tub, sauna (which we did not use becasue we ran out of time), and plenty of towels. Next to the pool area is a gym, but we did not use the exercise room.

We're from Des Moines, and with gas prices as they are, decided to have a "get away" in our home town. Staying at The Hotel Fort Des Moines was like entering another world and another era. For a romantic get-away (we were celebrating our anniversary), I couldn't recommend a better hotel. We had the pool and hot-tub all to ourselves the entire weekend, and the pool level offers amazing vistas of the city.

Me and friends stayed here for a birthday. It was dirty, totally in need of being redone. Stains on curtains. I've stayed in better motel 6's. I was totally disappointed. I did like the shuttle bus they had and the staff was friendly. The rooms and hallways were just plan nasty. I would not recommend it at all.

This is an older hotel in a downtown location. It has aged nicely and is a welcome relief from the sameness of so many hotels these days.

The Hotel Fort Des Moines was a very nice surprize as it is a very nostalgic as well as a historic hotel in down town Des Moines. I enjoyed my stay as it was very quiet at night. The resturant was being renovated at the time of my stay but there were plenty of choices with in walking distance to the hotel.

The Hotel is clean, spacious, and conveniently located downtown. The room was nice, with a fairly spacious tv room and separate sleeping quarters. The bed was comfortable, but the blanket felt a little cheap. Otherwise, the experience was good. The hotel staff was cordial. A plus.

"My family really liked staying in this hotel, the employees were friendly and the rooms clean, plus the free parking was great. Our room either didn't have A/C or it wasn't turned on, the windows would open but there was no way to keep them up in a safe manner."

"This old hotel has a lot of charm. The shuttle service took us to the Civic Center and picked us up, though there was a little problem with picking us up at a different location. The one thing not mentioned in the website's review is that parking is FREE. Service was very friendly. There was some water damage on the ceiling of our room, but it is an old hotel!"

"81 nights in hotels this year... cleanest, friendliest, hotel ever. Staff helpful, courteous, friendly. Rooms, spotless, amenities outstanding. I cannot get over... the drapes, bedspread, everything in the room was fresh and clean. Have the salmon at the restaurant... 5 star."
