Decent hotel for the price I paid. But it would be expensive without Orbitz's discount. The hotel is very close to a railway track and hence can wake you up in the night.

It might be a historical hotel , but I've stayed in really old and historical hotels that were great. This one is just a run down hotel trying to live off the past. Good: staff and nice lobby. That is it. Bad: Very small sparsly funished rooms, 8's have bigger and better rooms. 3" of water in the tub when I checked in. Parkings a joke: only 30 spots in a leased lot and 1 spot left or right could get ticketed (otherwise park on street overnight ok, but 2 hr limit during the day) Choose it for location and on site restaurant. The restaurant was closed so I had to walk around looking for a restaurant (not fun after an operation)

I always try to stay in historic hotels when I travel. I wished I'd skipped this one and stayed at a national chain. The rooms / bathrooms haven't been remodeled since the funky 1970s. My bed was extrememly uncomfortable and so low to the floor that it barely brushed my kneecaps. Water from the sink stained my shirt with some kind of lead. Wine bar / load music located on the first floor were easily heard from my 8th floor room. Prices of per night seem too much for this in South Dakota. Try some where else until they get it together and upgrade.

Right in the middle of downtown, great location. Hotel was actually quiet but that ends here. Beds are the equivalent of $300 mattresses. Rooms are small, TV from another era, AC unit sounds like a tractor which some might like...

This hotel is interesting from a historical perspective. It has lots of Native American artwork mixed with some older foreign decor. Located in the heart of downtown Rapid City it has a great location. Unfortunately, there are some downfalls. Parking is not available directly at the hotel. Instead, you park a block down the street and you can only park on the top level of the parking ramp. Additionally, you will encounter numerous people trying to beg you for money at all times of the day when walking down the streets. You will find great local shops to pass the time away just seconds away from the hotel. The rooms within the hotel are mediocre at best. They are in massive need of updating. The amenities within this hotel are minimal. No room services, no pool, no whirlpool, pretty much all you get is your room. The elevator are incredibly small and slow. The staff was very nice and friendly. Personally, I would not stay here again. We were fortunate to get a good rate on one of the best rooms in the hotel (which included a jacuzzi), otherwise, we would have looked elsewhere for our lodging needs after the first night. There are tons of bars surrounding this hotel. Again, I did not feel safe at all walking the streets after the 8 o clock hour. Stay at your own risk.

I attended an air force reunion with my parents at this hotel. I was very surprised and pleased with the accomodations. Upgrade was needed on the TV set in the room & access was not easy to the room with a wheelchair; but overall it was a more than pleasant experience. The staff went out of their way to accomodate our needs. They were extremely personable and made us feel very welcome. The food served in the dining room was excellent. The decor beautiful. The gift shop amazing. I would highly recommend a stay at the Alex Johnson for those who do not want to deal with game rooms & pool times. It was a very peaceful & restful resbid from a busy world. Well done Alex Johnson staff from a VERY satisfied customer!!

From the moment we opened the door we knew we were not going to stay at the Hotel Alex Johnson. The windows were so dirty you could barely see out of them. The bedspread had human hairs all over it. The accordion-pleated shade on the lamp had dead bugs and flies in the creases, the chairs had stains on them, the shower had mold in it. If you have the chance to stay at the Hotel Alex Johnson for whatever price, DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!

We spent two nights there on tour. It was great to see that a building with this historical background had been preserved. The lobby with the original American Indian decor was beautiful.

We arrived late to discover nothing in the town was open past 8pm. We had a moving truck with us, but the hotel staff just recommended to park next to the local fast food restaurant (which was impossible due to road construction). When that option was unavailable, we were told to park illegally until the morning and move the truck by 7am--which we did when we left the hotel. The town is dead and the hotel staff is unhelpful (and seems to forget that there is a pet fee until you check in). You are better off going to a hotel off the interstate.

This was a wonderful place to stay. Staying in a Historic Hotel of the Rockies was the most unique experience I have ever had. They have a Native American theme throughout the hotel with a wonderful convenient Landmark Restaurant.

Got to the hotel approximately 11 pm. The room was still not cleaned although check out is 3 pm, and the employees weren't even apologetic. Room was very stuffy, old fashioned, and smelled like smoke.

My husband and I stayed at the Alex Johnson for the first and last time. The desk clerk gave us incorrect information about the parking garage, and we received a parking violation. When my husband went back to the desk the man at the desk said it was a training issue, but refused to take care of the parking violation or even to apologize, and was rude. We stay in Rapid City for business and pleasure several times a month, but we will never stay at the Alex Johnson again!!!

This hotel is downtown which is a plus. The person in the hotel gift shop was very friendly and interesting. He had a wealth of information about the unique items sold there. We had to carry our bags from the parking garage 2 blocks away because the loading zone was blocked. We were told we could only park on the top level of the garage with no elevator. The elevator in the hotel kept breaking down, so we also had to climb 6 flights of a very narrow old stairwell to get to and from our room. The last day when we got ready to check out, the loading zone was blocked full of motorcycles so again we had to carry our bags two blocks downtown to the garage. The downtown area was interesting with many good shops and a few restaurants. The artwork was outstanding. Most of the restaurants were overpriced for a family. We found good ones in Keystone and Hill City. We enjoyed Custer State Park and Crazy Horse more than Mount Rushmore. Crazy Horse had alot more to do and learn. The gift shop in back with Native American artists was a real plus.

The Hotel Alex Johnson in Rapid City was truly a pleasurable experience. This facility was nicely appointed with its historic theme indigenous to the area. The staff was helpful, knowledgeable and courteous. The rooms were squeaky clean with updates conforming to the original decor. New carpeting in our king bedroom with an updated bathroom to match; i.e. the bathroom had new octagon ceramic tile on the walls and floors, with a newly installed MARBLE SHOWER ENCLOSURE! This all conformed to the original decor and gave a touch of class, as was the rest of this historic facilty. Only objections were the smallness of the bathroom and elevators, though one must understand that's the way they were made in those days. Internet service, room coffee, hotel lounge, free garage parking across the street, as well as other dining conveniences such as a breakfast restaurant and brew pub across the street made this a pleasurable experience. Combine this with the bargain rate make this a hotel that I would highly recommend to friends and surely book again for myself!

Needs new beds - rooms are very small - first room they gave us was about as big as a postage stamp and only had a small shower (no tub) - requested another room and was given a little larger one with a full bath. Front desk staff are very helpful. Just need updating with more confortable beds.

We enjoyed our stay. Simple, beautiful hotel. Right next to main st and and easy to access. The staff was helpful and polite. The room was on the smaller side but comfortable for two. I'd stay here again, no questions. About half an hour from Mt. Rushmore and every other attraction that Rapid City has to offer.

Service and staff were horrible! Very dirty. Would not recommend this place at all!
