My room was very clean but the lighting was not brilliant. The bathroom was a bit small, you have to stand near the sink to close the door. The food in this hotel was fantastic and the waiter who looked after me was excellent. I will happily use this hotel on my next visit

A rare treat for a traveller used to Premier InnAs you'd expect this boutique hotel is a cut above my norm - it provided a very welcome and discrete service. I arrived late but was offered great flexibility in terms of food options and had very attentive service (house wine was delightful too). As a business or personal stopover Horton Grange is a pleasurable experience and I'd stay again in a flash.

A friendly atmosphere in lovely surroundingsBrilliant country house experience. I stayed in main house which was delightful. Breakfast superb. Fantastic bathroom and furnishsings - but please can the showers have thermostatic control as otherwise a millimeter difference on tap turns water from freezing to scalding.

the walls between rooms were so thin as to be almost useless - my neighbour's sneezing woke me up and I could hear every word of a phone conversation from the neighbour in the room on the other side of my room

Superb from start to finish!Having traveled from Brighton to Newcastle for a medical conference, the sight of Horton Grange and prospect of a premium hotel (at modest rates) was very welcome. The gentleman on reception was efficient and within a minute I was admiring the very well appointed suite and eyeing the menu. The restaurant is airy and peaceful, the fillet was cooked to perfection and beautifully presented, with plenty from the extensive wine list (at good prices) to complement the food.There were few other diners, which is a pity, and can only think Horton Grange is yet to be discovered by the discerning traveler.With a very early start the next day, the kitchen staff prepared a bacon sandwich before the usual opening time to get me on my way fully fuelled and before the traffic.I would definitely stay here again and recommend it 100%!

An unreserved 10 out of 10I normally only give a (5) in my reviews, but I stayed in such a dire hotel in South Shields the following night that I have determined to start giving a (6) where I found nothing to complain about at all - and Horton Grange was just such a hotel. I stayed in a "standard" room in the old stable block. It was lovely - modern, comfortable - and the separate "living" area with a desk and sofa made it even better. The bathroom was impeccably clean and modern - although I prefer a bath and it only had a shower. I enjoyed good, polite service although the manager(?) / receptionist / waiter wasn't very chatty. I only ate breakfast and rather wished I'd had dinner too as it was so good. The food was obviously high quality and even the piped muzak (a selection of piano pieces) was good. I wouldn't consider any other hotel if I stay in this area again - but do note one thing: The hotel is not where it appears in the Google Maps view in LateRooms - it's a fair way further north beyond the A1/A19 junction. I probably wouldn't have booked it if I'd known this but in hindsight I'm so pleased that I did.

Thumbs UpCustomer service was generally very good, only a little confusion regarding the opening hours of the hotel bar. The place was beautiful, set in picturesque grounds. The room was spacious as was the ensuite and the breakfast was fabulous - extensive and delicious. Would certainly stay here again.

Very nice and quiet hotel. Polite and helpful staff. I had a really good nights sleep in one of the garden rooms which had a sort of anteroom with a sofa as well as the double bedroom. Good shower and bed (these are important to me!). Good choice at breakfast. I would definitely stay here again if I needed to stay in this area.

Great place to stayIt's not often, as a business traveller, I am wowed by a hotel - but Lumley Castle is an exceptional place. The setting is truely magnificent, the staff are helpful and the food is wonderful!

Credit Crunch biting?I've stayed here many times so was very disappointed to find so many things had slipped since even my last stay. There was no soap in the wash hand basin soap dispenser and no tissues supplied. The little bin in the toilet must have been used as an ashtray at some point since it stank of cigarette ash and the breakfast service was lacking courtesy and extremely offhand and vague. Complaints at reception barely raised a reaction never mind an apology of any description.

Very acceptable for an overnight stayI had a \"Garden Room\" which was almost a suite with a separate sitting area, bedroom with en-suite bathroom. Sitting area quite cold as the radiator was not working and a howling gale blowing from somewhere under the windows. Very comfortable (and warm) bedroom and bed.Small changes for me would have helped - tea/coffee making could have had its own table within reach of a socket - tv (digital freeview) was in bedroom but all chairs in sitting area.Breakfast OK but not remarkable. Good sized bathroom with shower (no hair dryer).

Wonderful weekend and outstanding hotelWe booked this hotel for a weekend visit to see our daughter who is a student in Newcastle. Every aspect of our stay was perfect from the service, the room, the bar, lounge area and breakfast. It is a most attractive country house in lovely grounds. I would recommend for a romantic break or for family and friends to enjoy a break together. We did not dine in the evening but the menu looked outstanding and the restauarant is very attractive overlooking the gardens. We will certainly be returning.
