Description:
When you arrive, you ring the front door bell, sign in, and are handed your bedroom and front door key. After that the house is yours to come and go as you please. At Holmwood House, all the rooms are different, both in decoration and size, and all have their own bathroom or shower room. There are many extra touches in addition to color television, coffee and tea making facilities, radio-alarm clock, hairdryer and direct dial telephone. We also offer family suites for up to six people and air conditioning in some rooms. Breakfast is our specialty: we offer a choice of fruit juices, grapefruit segments and prunes, cereals, including our special muesli (full of fruit and nuts); followed by a wide selection, including full English breakfast, Craster kippers, fruit platter, vegetarian breakfast, hot croissants and toast. We do our best to meet special needs - vegan, celiac, diabetes etc - let us know your requirements. To help your digestion we will soothe you with gentle classical music. On the ground floor we have a comfortable sitting room in which to relax and browse amongst the books and information about York and the surrounding areas. By popular demand the hotel as a whole is non-smoking. We now have a Gold Award for offering a smoke free environment. For those who find stairs difficult we have three rooms at ground level and one at garden level.
Overview:
Built as two private houses in the middle of the 19th Century, and backing on to one of the prettiest squares in York, the two listed buildings have been lovingly restored to retain the ambience of a private home and provide peaceful, elegant rooms where the pressures of the day can be eased away.

I cannot fault our stay at Holmwood House. The room was large, comfortable and well equipped. The hotel is well located close to both the railway station and city centre. the breakfast was great. I would definitely stay here again, and recommend to friends and family.

visit to yorkvery welcome staff . Our bedroom was very pleasant with an extremely comfortable bed. Breakfast was excellent, more than we could eat. The bus stop outside was very handy as we did not have to use the car to visit all the interesting sights. All the staff most helpful on our departure. Thanks for a very enjoyable visit

CHEAP AND CHEERFULCheap and cheerful if you want it to be, only downside to it is the room is very small. Other rooms are more expensive and more upmarket eg four poster bed.

Lovely old building and well looked-afterWe didn't get any discount, but for all that I would stay here again. The room was lovely and had ensuite with bath/shower. The breakfast was great. They do local oak-smoked kippers and, although we didn't try these, overheard other guests say they were lovely. There is also a guest lounge, which would have been improved if there was Sky television in there (since Sky is not available in the bedrooms), but that may be a conscious decision for a quiet area. Lots of information available in here - including lots of ideas of where to eat with comments from previous guests. Even though this is on a main road, we were at the front of the house and didn't notice any traffic noise at night. There is a car park at the rear, which is a boon in York. Lots of buses into the city if you don't feel like walking, but the walk is only about 20 minutes. National Rail Museum is almost on the doorstep and there are lots and lots of things to do in York. We hope to return sometime.

Pleasant enoughThis B&B was a pleasant enough place to stay with very helpful staff. Unfortuantely we missed breakfast so I can't comment on that. The room was comfortable and tidy and not too 'B&B' like. The bathroom had a massive bath which was nice. All around very nice but not really worth £85.

Nice, comfortable stay in YorkRelatively close to the city centre, 5 minute walk to the York City Wall, 12-15 minutes to York Minster. Very large double room on the third floor. Excellent full english breakfast; hosts were very patient and informative. Would highly recommend.
