Pleasant staff and environment. it was walking distance to the Alamo, which was nice a little far from the center of town, but an enjoyable stay I would recommend this hotel.

The decor in the public areas has a Latin flair to it. Parking lot was small and there was a $14 parking fee. The hotel was certainly adequate for our short overnight stay. The public areas were clean and spacious, and Latin music certainly added some character to the hotel. The hotel has a family restaurant and a convenience shop. The rooms were adequate and the beds were comfortable. The rooms have free WiFi. The hotel is about a mile from the Riverwalk business and entertainment section of town. Make sure you bring your walking shoes.

We stayed here over Easter. Disappointed that the pool wasn't open (didn't see the online trvel website note that it would be closed), but they did fill it on Friday afternoon, and continued all thru Saturday. NOT heated, so girls weren't in more than their toes, which was disappointing because living in PA we were looking forward to some swim time in TX. The hotel is away from the hustle and bustle, if that's what you're looking for. The RiverWalk proper is right across the street and a good 15 minute hike until you reach a restaurant, but also nice if you just want to take a walk and not constantly running into people. Our room was half-way down a very long hallway, right in the middle of the 2 sets of elevators, facing the pool. We had 2 double beds, which were very comfortable. I have a horrible time sleeping away from home, but not this trip! The room was large enough for 4, including 2 teen girls. Very quiet and sound-proof. Bathroom is small and little room to sit anything on the small shelf behind the toilet. There is a nice ledge in the tub area for shampoos, etc. Big, fluffy towels. Remote control for the air/heat, which was great. Staff is amazingly friendly and helpful, even as you're just passing thru, wanting to know if you need anything or any help. We had the breakfast buffet one morning. A little much I thought at $11.95/person, especially for what was offered. For $9.95 you could have the continental buffet, which only omitted the eggs, bacon/sausage and melons. But it was convenient and our server, Bo, was great! Dislikes: what I find in most, not enough outlets! paying to park, no frig, no microwave.

The river walk does go past but it is a dammed and partially dry portion. You can take a quick trolley there but the driver was very rude. The hotel is old but mostly modernized. The hotel staff was great but the restaurant was horrible. The food was poor and slow. We never got an order right. They were out of food but did not say until we had been there 30 minutes.

I was so surprised being in a Holiday Inn and not experiencing friendly employees at the front desk. we arrived and no Hello just an employee saying to another employee "help these people" no friendliness how sad :( also we were very surprised that we were charged $ 14.00 daily for parking ??????????? then at night other people in their balconies were loud we could not sleep the last day until 3or 4 am due to the loud noise...

Just north of the city, but on the Riverwalk. The food was standard hotel restaurant fare. Overall clean, friendly and convenient hotel with good amenities. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend this location to our fellow travelers. We would only point out that the food on Riverwalk is sub-par. Adventure out into the surrounding areas to find the really good stuff.

my family and i stayed here for spring break '09.the hotel was very nice, staff was very freindly and helpful, rooms are very clean.my only problem was the pool had way too much clorine after getting out of the pool my girls eyes were red and burning there hair was so dry even after putting a handful of conditioner

Overall this is a nice hotel, but it is not anywhere near all the fun of the riverwalk. We paid for a riverview room, but ended up with a veiw of a big dirt hole. Service was so/so, some staff nice most indifferent. The hallway smelled and everything was damp. We liked it better when it was the Clarion.

Air conditioner sounded like a lawn mower. No outlet for the coffee pot, had to make coffee on the floor. Would have had a view of the riverwalk except for an overgrown bush. Could hear my neighbor throught the walls

This hotel is barely near the river (river or puddle, you be the judge). You could walk but it is almost a mile from the river center. The Trolley is the Blue route which is a very odd route and often slow and has the most inconvenient time for all the trolleys. I went to a conference there and though I paid way to much (with the conference discount) I hope the normal rate was not too much more. The decor was modern but the room was very small. The bathroom was very small as well with very little counter space and very poor water pressure. The worst thing was the parking! There was plenty available but it cost money to park, since this place is far from the river walk I don't understand why is cost money. The parking garage is very small with only one lane to go in and out. (in and out in one single lane, felt dangerous). Very poor parking arrangements to actually cost you money. Staff was pleasant. I would not recommend this hotel.

Less fussy than the pricy SA hotels; good value. We liked funky retro '70's theme--a break from the usual adobe hacienda. Airstream trailer out front signals a fun attitude. A very, very friendly staff; good for families; clean rooms, although the bath is a bit small. Easy parking, quick access to north end of riverwalk away from the rowdy areas, but within 5 minute walk of the party. Saw a part of riverwalk that is older and seldom seen. Visited the touching war memorial and historic municipal auditorium nearby.

It was my first time to San Antonio and I am glad I stayed at the Holiday Inn El Tropicano. It was so close to the Riverwalk and near many landmarks. Not to mention the proximity to the interstate system. This is a great spot and next time I will go the Tiki Bar on the first floor and see some live entertainment.

The hotel staff was friendly. Basic amenities like oven, internet not there. location is bad. The hotel is not at all near to the river walk as mentioned on its website. Me and my partner had a tough time walking to reach the hotel in the night, roads were deserted. the hotel also does not have its wireless system working and there are no basic things like Microwave or fridge. the coffee maker was not user friendly. Not at all recommended to stay at all.

Older hotel, but very clean, interesting decor and layout. On the far end of the Riverwalk closer to the Alamo, but not close to the usual Riverwalk activities - walkable if you have the time and energy. A bus system can also get you close to just about anywhere you want to go. Tower rooms are very small and you can't control the temperature. We moved to another room not in the tower (also bigger) with its own thermostat and COLD A/C. Our second room was a LONG way from the elevator. You could take the stairwells down for a short-cut, but couldn't return through the stairwells to get back up (locked) and had to go all the way around. They gave us a coupon for $20 off breakfast per night and the buffet was excellent. Staff was very friendly. Outdoor "Heated" pool wasn't warm enough in December. My 13-year old son jumped in and lasted about 5 minutes. On-site parking was free and there was a parking attendant.

The Hotel itself was okay, but the service was horrible and not very nice! Also, when reservations were made by my stepmom for my new wife and I. She specifically asked if this hotel was actually on the river and they told her it was and that the room we were reserved, you could see the water from it we would be close to the water. Well, we could see the water, but it was away and for a honeymoon she was trying to make it romantic for us and it wasn't what she was told. Plus they failed to tell her it cost 13.00 a day to park in the hotel parking lot..........the hotel was already overpriced.

First of all, I booked this hotel on the expectation that it had a Tiki bar next to the pool and it was on the river walk. When you pull up to the location it is a little scary and outdated. It is all from the 60's not retro. The pool was lame and no tiki bar to get drinks at the pool. The bar was inside on first floor in the lobby with little seating and not help. Yes it is actually on the river walk but not the "river walk". No stores or restruants, wrong side of town. It took 30-45 mintues to walk to the actual river walk! By the time I got to the "river walk". Also, they charge $14 to park in there parking lot, when there is a lot right in front of the hotel for $5. You do not know that youa re going to be charged until you get there and the management will not wave the fee. On the good side, the room was clean and small. The lobby was redone retro style. My advice if you are going to the river walk check out and make sure the hotel is on the actual tourist part of the walk and not a 30-45 mintue walk. I would have done better to get a room a little off the walk and pay for parking as I got there.

Unreasonable parking fee and location is bad. Room is small and the floor in the bathroom is kind of sticky.

I just returned from staying at the El Tropicana. I loved it! Yes, it is not directly on the Riverwalk, but it is not far. Plus, the trolley runs right outside of the hotel. The staff is by far the friendliest staff I have ever come across. They were helpful, courteous, and delightful. I didn't use the pool, but it looked nice. The rooms were fine. The bathrooms were very modern. My mother, who is in her late 70's, thought the toilet was a little too close to the floor which made it hard to get up and down from. She didn't like the lack of counterspace in the bathroom. I thought it was fine. I would definitely stay here again. The staff made it worth the stay.

Rooms were clean, in good repair, but some of the fixtures proved this to be an older building. The toilet in my room more closely resembled a public restroom toilet than one you would expect to find in a motel room. Hotel was at the start of the Riverwalk, and it was about 8 blocks to get to the main area of downtown via surface streets (a little longer via the Riverwalk, but more scenic). I found the dining facilities within the motel to be a bit more expensive for most items than I would normally spend, but the food was good. (Hint: "Tropical Chips" are just French Fries!) Some of the staff could be a little friendlier, but others made up for it by being extremely helpful. Limited vending machines and other similar conveniences.
