Hotel location was perfect...walking distance to everything. We had booked a non-smoking room but ended up getting a smoking room. Hotel staff was 1/2 and 1/2 when it comes to friendliness. Overall, it was definetly worth the price.

It was clean, friendly, the staff wen tout of there way to make your stay there a pleasure.

Visited here in September and while the rooms are large and some have great views of the port, the common areas all reek of smoke. Plus the large indoor pool is kept at such a cool temperature that swimming is not a pleasant experience. I would not stay here again. However, if you are a smoker, go for it.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn on the Bay for a quick, overnight trip on my way up north. I had read the reviews and thought would be a good choice. It was an EXCELLENT choice! The hotel is located near many tourist attractions, with the Old Port area within easy walking distance and the art museum right around the corner. I had recently broken my ankle, and the staff bent over backwards to make sure my stay was comfortable AND safe. The free shuttle is wonderful, and a very kind driver named M made sure I knew all about the city. Knowing I could not maneuver the city on foot, he drove me to sites so I could still enjoy everything. The room service was great! I had a steak and was suprised at how well prepared everything was. The only suggestion I could make would be to improve the rooms a bit. Although fairly clean, I felt the room was a bit dated. A good hotel for business or pleasure. I would recommend it to anyone. Would be a great hotel for couples or mature travellers. Kids might find it a bit boring, but there is a children's museum nearby. I would stay again!

the hotel is situated at walking distance of the waterfront and also of the Arts Museum. Service was very good, with complementary shuttlebus to pick us up after dining out on the pier. A forgotten order of pancakes at breakfast was brought and not charged. Wifi internet didn't work properly, neither in the room nor in the lobby, and didn't get fixed after reporting it.

Everyone was helpful, friendly and provided good directions to various locations. Great location for families traveling to Portland, Maine and centrally located.

This is the only hotel priced within reason, downtown, overlooking the bay. You are within walking distance of almost everywhere, and it's also one of the few places that offer free parking. It's the only place weI stay when visiting Portland. This is not your run of the mill Holiday Inn. I consider it upscale. Very nice...very comfortable...great staff...variety of rooms. Ask for a upper floor room bayside. It's great having your coffee in the morning while watching the boats come and go from the harbor. I think we spend almost as much time relaxing the the room enjoying the view as we do getting out and about.

Quiet, convenient, shuttle drivers went out of their way to be helpful. While the majority of the staff was exceptionally courteous, we did encounter an occasional rude and dismissive desk clerk. I was traveling to a concert with two teen daughters, the hotel was just across the street from the concert venue, which was exceptionally convenient, the shuttle van driver was very friendly and amazingly helpful, informing us of places to eat and stay and running us across the street in the van on the night of the performance because it was raining.

We stayed 1 night. The city and the hotel were very nice. The rooms were clean, the desk staff was professional. Parking was cramped. The hotel is a short walk to the downtown area and port. There is a mild to moderate hill you will have to walk back up to get to the hotel. This is only a problem if you have physical limitations. Explore the city. There are many delightful shops and restaurants. The information center across from the harbour has a TON of information on things to do as well as clean public restrooms. The harbour lighthouse cruise is GREAT.

My daugher (11) and I arrived late Saturday night to find our room had been given to someone else (through an honest name mix up on the hotel's part). The hotel gave us the only available room then moved us the next day to an upgraded room and gave us a $20 coupon for the restaurant, all without our having to ask. The shuttle picked us up at the airport in a timely manner and the driver provided very good information about what was available in the area. The hotel is within walking distance of the Old Port and we thoroughly enjoyed the walk into town. Just be careful...the hill going back to the hotel can get you if you're tired! We ate at the restaurant, which has a great breakfast buffet. We used the pool, which was a nice size. My daughter and I had a great time at this hotel and plan to stay there again if we get back to Portland.

Very friendly and accommodating. Can't think of a thing! I felt very comfortable and relaxed at this hotel. The staff people were great. The pool area is really nice. The food in the restaurant is delicious and they have a great children's menu and welcome children.

My daughter and I went to Maine for a couple of days during her spring break from college. When we arrived the manager on duty gave us a walking map of Portland and pointed out all her favorite spots. Very helpful. The hotel is extremely well maintained and the facilities were excellent. I would suggest spending the extra money for a view of the bay.

We had a huge room for a great price! The pool temperature was a bit too cool and too much chlorine in the water. The hotel is in a good location, walk able to most parts of downtown Portland. We were pleasantly surprised to have a room that was probably a suite. Though we didn't face the water, the size of the room made up for the uninteresting view. This is not what I remember any Holiday Inn to be like! The Holiday Inn By the Bay is more like a Hilton!

We like to stay at this hotel when we follow our AHL team into town. The proximity to the Portland Museum of Art, the Portland Stage Company and the Civic Center make this a great location. We usually combine these activities with a trip to the LL Bean Outlet store two blocks away and a dinner at DeMillo's, a converted ferry moored in Old Portland. The staff is very courteous and helpful. The brunch/continental breakfast on the weekends is a very good value. Marcy's is one block away if you desire the greasy spoon breakfast that will stick to the ribs for awhile. Great accommodations and great views from the rooms make this hotel a great choice.

I liked the view from our room and the closeness to everything. There was a sock in the room left from the last person. It is a holiday. It provides the services needed and the location with out going overboard. I think it might be good if you have business in the area. We traveled up by train and was able to walk about the city and waterfront easily and also get a shuttle to and from the train station.
