I would recommend this hotel to friends visiting Durango.

Atmosphere. Bathroom fan noisy, poor sound insulation. I like the historic atmosphere and the views from the rooms. The front desk staff were excellent but some of the other staff were unfriendly. It is a unique one of a kind place to stay.

What a wonderful hotel. We stayed in a very large room with 2 beds that fit our family of 5 easily. Furnishings were lovely, robes fluffy, and room was very clean. Breakfast was included and included omelettes and posole as well as traditional continental fare. Service was wonderful. Wifi was slow, but flat screen TV was nice. Overall, a wonderful stay. We'll definitely be back. Room 108 was gorgeous! Parking can be a hassle, but the location can't be beat.

We stayed at the Strater with some hesitation. We planned our trip around Colorado as we went, and this was only intended to be a one night stay. We enjoyed our room and the location so much we stayed over again. The room was very nicely decorated in period pieces, and the hotel overall was like walking into a western movie. The breakfast wasn't much to speak of, but we didn't mind eating elsewhere. The location is nice as you really don't need to even get in the car for most of what Durango offers. The bar was nice, the service was great, the live food was quite entertaining - even though they didn't know our requests (what bluegrass group doesn't know Bill Monroe songs?). A previous poster said they had no internet. They do as of March 08. They even loaned us a laptop at no charge when mine was acting up. Can't say enough about the staff. When we go back to we will definitely stay here again.

The rooms are decorated with lovely antique furniture pieces and are very cosy. Location is right down town. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Had an excellent steak dinner in the restaurant. Complimentry breakfast was one of the best I've had.

The decor created a lovely Victorian atmosphere and the staff was friendly and helpful. I can't think of anything that we did not like about this hotel. The starter hotel was lovely and a welcome change from the usual. They have done everything to bring back the elegance of the Victorian era. We had a lovely time.

My husband and I stayed for our ainniversary. All of the antiques give the hotel and rooms a warm inviting feeling. The staff is friendly and helpfull, the beds are comfortable and the hotel is quiet. Be sure not to miss out on the private hot tub the hotel offers! The hotel is within walking distance to the train depot, which was great after a cold wet day on the train!

The Hotel is centraly located on the main street in Durango. It has live entertainment and several dining options. The room was furnished with antique (victorian) furniture. The breakfast was included - but it ended at 9 AM. I generally enjoyed my stay.

My husband and I were appauled by the condition of this hotel, especially for a */night fee. The bathroom had not been renovated since the early 1960s, hair all over, cracks in tiles, dirty carpet, and uncomfortable bed. This "historic hotel" needs to be updates, desperately! I would not recommend this at all.

Loved the area, was close to restaurants, trian station, Quaint Hotel, everyone on staff was great. The breakfast was ok, they made this soup for breakfast that I have never seen, and the eggs with the bottom breading was not something I have ever eaten. I think just scrambled eggs, even with the cheese would of been better, most everyone likes that. We had a wonderful time and loved the fire place that you just set and enjoy. It is nice to see how well they keep the hotel.

love, love, love! i love it because it's kept in it's time period - late 1800s. i mean this by furniture and wall paper; but up to date with tv, shower, and ac (which didn't get to the 60 degrees i wanted but still cool). wanted a king, but settled for a queen so we could stay here; didn't get much sleep because of it but still came out smiling. great location right in the middle of restaurants, train, and shopping. fyi... no internet access.

We originally only booked for one night, but loved Durango and the Strater so much we stayed on for two more nights.
