Value for moneyGreat little hotel in the centre of Newquay. On arrival, initially disappointed as it was in the hub of things, and we thought we might experience 'night life sounds' when going to bed, but our two single rooms were at the rear of the hotel overlooking the beach and facing west - superb sunsets from the rear terrace when eating. All sorts of people staying there - surfing dudes, families, couples, business travellers etc. Superb value for money. Little outdated, but clean, comfortable and good food. Good general base for visiting Eden Project, Heligan, Padstow etc, with or without car (we did have one and booked parking space - and at £5 per night not bad considering parking charges elsewhere). All staff friendly, helpful - nothing too much trouble (except for one barmaid who had difficulty serving anyone who wasn't male and over 25!).Overall, good value, excellent food at reasonable prices.Wouldn't go during peak season as Newquay as a town per se is really for 'young people', but doubt you'd get the same comparable value or all round service elsewhere in Newquay. Would definitely stay again and recommend to friends.

Everything you need in perfect locationAlthough the room was a bit dated and rather small, it was excellent value considering the low price and ideal location right next to the beach with gorgeous sea views. The room was clean and comfortable enough, and everything worked. Good food in the restaurant downstairs. Make sure you book your car parking space in advance. Breakfast was ok, but the restaurant breakfast (after 10am) was much better value for money than the hotel breakfast (7.30-9.30) even though both were in the same place. The highlight of this hotel is the location and sea views.

My friend and I stayed here for 5 days at the end of June. We didn't get a refurbished room however we still got a sea view, and it was plenty big enough for the both of us. Bathroom was very clean and had room maintained every day. Overall cleanliness of the hotel was excellent.

we had enjoyed our stay in the hotel, it is a good place to stay if you want to stay in Newquay. The rooms were tidy and the hotel was just beside sea side. Just a caution when you check in do check whether the flash in the toilet works properly because we had to change the room because of that reason. There are lot of places nearby to eat KCF was very good. Overall very good experience

the long weekendThis wasn't a bad hotel to stay in, simply it is cheap and cheerful well the furniture and decor was very dated but it was clean, we wouldn't stay here again next time we come Newquay we would rather pay a little more and stay in a nicer part of town and had a prettier room and view!

exceptional value for moneyFor £45/night for family room, this was excellent no frills value for money. Great position overlooking Great Western Beach. Family friendly, children very happy! Bar staff very helpful and friendly (milk for children's beakers provided for free). Even leaking ceiling from shower above and slightly thin walls didn't really cause too much upset.

Very good for budget accomodation. Very clode to local pubs and clubs (barracuda is next door). Would stay again and recommend to friends and family.

Great location, rooms in need of refurbishmentThe hotel is in an excellent location, right on the cliffs overlooking the beaches and in the main part of Newquay. We stayed out of season at the start of June and the area was quiet. In the height of season it might be noiser. We reserved a parking space but were told they had no record so went to the overflow car park. Later that evening we noticed a reserved parking space right outside the hotel with our name on :( The room was OK but well overdue a refurbishment and the bathroom floor looked like it hadn't seen a mop for some time. The view from the room was great, looking out to the beaches and the sea.The Steam restaurant and bar was very good. It has a large terrace and garden overlooking the beaches. The food was good and reasonably priced. We paid £50 for our stay which was probably a fair rate for the location and condition of the room. I would not pay anymore though.

Short break in NewquayStaff very friendly, room basic but clean & tidy. Food & bar extremely expensive, you need to find the local Weatherspoons!

DisappointingRooms and hotel deco rather old and jaded. Initially given room next to nosiy air ducts and overlooking dustbins! Room was changed on request to one with a great sea view. Unfortunately the windows were so dirty (on the outside)that it was virtually impossible to see out! One window had a broken catch and could not be closed properly. We asked for this to be seen to and nothing was done. We were not offered any explanation. The restaurant called 'Steam' was the saving grace. Nice room and menu and children friendly. Open to non residents so maybe stay somewhere else and eat there...

Location - Location - LocationThe Great Western hotel, is a warm friendly place to stay. The 'rooms with a sea view' are spacious and have exactly what is stated... A great sea view! The garden terrace is a superb place for eating out and for children to play in.The view of the sea and surrounding beaches is superb. It is centrally located with beach access right outside the doors. This is our second visit, and we will be back next year...

Newquay overnight visitAs this is only a 2 star hotel and the people we were travelling with have stayed there twice before they had told us all about the hotel before we went. It is generally 2 star standard with an adequate room although the bathroom was abit dated and the toilet difficult to flush. We arrived abit early and were told alittle curtly that we couldn't go in. The receptionist seemed very distracted. Getting in and out to park is interesting as someone has to move the chain away and you are stuck out onto the main road while you are waiting. The hotel itself is ok and I think if you can get a good rate it is ok. We paid 60 but don't think it is worth that as you have to pay for breakfast and parking.

Wont be visiting again!....Could be a lovely hotel but room (double) was very small & furniture dated, shower room was tiny, worn & dated with dodgy plumbing! On leaving the hotel, we passed what must have been a superior room which looked totally different, stylish & contemporary....at the price we paid, i would have expected this type of room.Breakfast was poor with not that much choice so we cancelled that for the remaining 2 nights, the only redeeming factor was the lovely menu & quality of food in the bar/restaurant,with magnificent views in the cliff top beer garden.Parking very limited & very expensive on-site at £5 a day!!

A great break awayWe stayed at the great western for 4 nights in May 09. The room was comfortable and clean, as was the hotel and it was in a prime location for the town and the beach. On the saturday the hotel hosted a charity concert out in the beer garden overlooking the beach. Overall we had a very enjoyable time

Great Western ReviewOn arrival I could not get in the car park because there was a chain across it, I was then told this had to be booked at time of booking (This was not clear) I was then charged an extra £5 for the privaledge and had to open and close it myself - Not a particularly great welcome from the receptionist either (No smile little eye contact and not a word about the facilities at the hotel. Also in the carpark at the front of the hotel near the sign that say's Families Welcome was a young lad (20 somthing) absolutly paraletic drunk- Staff at reception found this amusing!!! I didn't need this after a 6 hour journey at 10.30pm in the evening. The room was shabby and outdated although the shower was good. Breakfast in the morning was very good, this was at least some consulation, I left in a good mood.
