Dusty & stuffy RoomsThe rooms were not as great an expectation as the name suggests! The rooms were stuffy and dusty with the bedding smelling as if they been used by someone else. Though this may have been highlighted on the website, this hotel does not offer free parking you have to look for your own parking.

twin roomI booked a twin room for myself & my daughter but when we arrived at the hotel we were informed they had double booked & we were offered 2 single rooms which we declined. They found us a twin room! We later discovered the loo would not flush ! They sorted this out & all was well after that! The breakfast was very good!

Surprisingly good accomodation and service.Really great accomodation. Clean, friendly and great value for money. Will use again! I thought that it would be a dive, being part of a pub nut was pleasantly surprised by the quality. I've stayed in a number of places in Reading but this one beats them all for quality and value for money.

Great Expectations - A Victorian Experience?A good value hotel, Room much as expected, biggest negative was quality of bed - a bit soft, Walls are thin, so could hear other room, for me not much of an issue though. Breakfast was fine, although not outstanding.

Don't have too Great an Expectation of this Hotel!Arrived at the Hotel not knowing if our reservation was ok, as we had heard nothing since making the booking through Late Rooms a few months previous to our visit. We had tried to ring the hotel two days before but could never get through, the phone kept going to answerphone. When we arrived we realised there was no carpark, so we had to park on the busy main street overnight. Booking in was slow as there was only one member of staff on show, who also was tending the bar. Ordering food was a nightmare as we were told that many of the things on the menu were not available, so on changing our orders (which happened several times) we were then informed that the alternatives were also not available. When the starters finally arrived, they completely left out my husband, so he didn't get one at all. The main courses were all served with jacket potatoes rather than chips that we asked for. Finally, we were served desserts. We received one we didn't even order, and one of the puddings had a chocolate sauce topping, although we'd asked for raspberry. I asked for an irish Coffee to finish, and was brought a glass of coffee with a whisky in it, a jug of clotted cream (too thick to pour), and some sugar. All in all it was a farce. The room we were in should have been made up for us and our young son, but they had forgotten to make up his sofa bed or leave any extra bedding or towels, so we had to ask, but there was no-one about to do it, except the cook! All in all, a real fiasco. If i hadn't laughed about it I would have cried. This was meant to be a birthday treat for my sons birthday, but not much of a treat as it turned out!

Exactly what I needed.......I travelled from wales to meet up with some old friends for a night out and needed a bed for the night and this place was just the ticket. Although the single room was a bit on the small side it was clean and comfortable. The location was excellent, only a short walk from the town centre and the breakfast was lovely. I would definately stay here again.

Reading's little gemI was pleasently surprised by this hotel, it was very clean, the rooms and public areas were modern, well maintained and comfortable. I booked the wrong date but the hotel staff went out of their way to sort it out and make sure I was happy. I couldnt believe the value of this booking, the room spacious with good internet (supplied by the cloud so 15.00 for 24 hours though!) and breakfast cooked to order. Ideal location too, literally 2 minutes from the largest shopping and restaurant complex in reading. Perfect in every way. Note though if you have a car you will need to find a car park a street or 2 away.

A surprisingly good stayI travel lots for business, typically staying in Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza or Movenpick hotels, and I was a little apprehensive moving away from my comfort zone. I know Reading well, but have neve been to the The Great Expections. My room was a bargain, clean, quiet (at the back of the hotel), and as good as many other UK hotels I've stayed in for much more money. Recommended.

Short walk from the main train station and functional accomodation (Clean and comfortable room). Good value for money and as good as more expensive hotels on the same road.

Best so farRoom 30 - double (suite ish - had a settee although a tad worn), even though I'd booked a single. Each time I've stayed the rooms have got better - can't wait time the next time. Pub food in the even was plentiful - pity the microwave is used.............but still good value

Good ExperienceI knew it as a great pub, but now it is a good value for money place to stay. Easy walking distance from the railway station and really good for the main shopping complex.

definitely not for me!hotel was not my type of accommodation, twas too dark and unfeminine - not suitable, as far am concerned, for a lady travelling alone. thank God i met another delegate staying at the hotel, so it was good to have company. we both were very disappointed about the hotel and said we would not return, for sure, when we are next in the reading. the windows in my room were dirty and the bathroom smelt, i had to leave fan on for so long to air the room. i longed for a perfume bottle or scented candle. finally, there were no stairs, which was unbelievable in these days of equal opportunity!

Glorified B&BHalways have been recently re-decorated, could still smell the paint. The room was old fashioned. Walls v thin (heard conversation of lady on one side, man snoring on the other!)Bathroom tidy. Floor carpet very dirty (hairs!) Breakfast - nice quality scrambled eggs. Chose this hotel because by normal B&B was full. I will be booking back into B&B for next week.

could have been betterHotel is clean and fine but catering facilities are not very good. downstairs is a pub. and you're pretty much served by the pub staff in the morning. breakfast is not at all intercontinental and service is average. don't expect much.
