Reliable one nighterI'd been here before so knew what to expect. Everything just right for my needs - really close to the station, simple check in, spacious room, view of the station rather than the sea (but it's only a bedroom!), really comfortable bed, attentive service at breakfast. And a great rate at the height of the season.

Room so hot!If the breakfast was as hot as the room, or if the room was as tepid as the breakfast, then the stay would have been much more enjoyable

A great and friendly hotel with only one small disappointmentAll the staff were very friendly and accommodating, the service was excellent, the room was very comfortable,( it would be better if the toilet roll holder was adjacent to the toilet and not accross the room behind the door). The only disappointment was at dinner on our last night, as the duck in the warm duck salad starter was very chewy, and the beef in the maincourse was also very tough, evrything else was of the highest standard.

Grand Hotel TorquayHotel staff helpful and friendly, good relaxed atmosphere. Just one criticism as a business user is that there is no wireless internet in the bedroom areas, it is available however in the bar area.

Great food, shame about the wifiI have used this hotel in the past and as with this visit I don't have any major complaints. I do however feel the lack of wifi connection in the bedrooms a touch frustrating. The bar area full of people tapping away on laptops is slightly bemusing. I wouild prefer to be able to spread myself out in my room and finish my days admin away from other guests but the lack of connection means using publica areas.Othewise good as ever.

Not so Grand when you get upstairs!A nice hotel when you walk through the doors and look at he decor, outdoor pools, sea view, spa etc. Once you get upstairs the accomodation its very tired and dated though. I stayed in a single room which I thought was very small, and very very old fashioned. It was clean though, the buffet breakfast was ok and its very handy for the train station.

"The Grand"As a company we have spent the last five months travelling around the UK – from Lerwick in the north, all over Wales, most of mainland England and just about all of Scotland along with most of Cornwall. In all of this time we have stayed in well over a hundred Hotels and it has to be said that the “The Grand Hotel Torquay” is neither Grand or Four star in grade and in our “league of Hotels” within the country is one of the worst. If the name of your establishment encompasses the word “Grand” – my advice would be to make sure it measures up to expectations. In this case it does not. Both rooms booked (Sea view Doubles) lacked in basic comfort, TV’s the size of postage stamps, old and tired bathrooms, tread bear carpets, walls that had not seen decorations in years, rotting window frames, old bed linen, a furniture collection that looked like it had been gathered from a skip, a wireless connection that was slower than slow…etc…we could go on…and on.In basic terms, and what we have learnt over the last five months (and over past years) is that one “cannot” trust the star system for Hotels in the UK any longer. Hotels like the “Grand” need to wake up to the fact that standards that where acceptable in years past are not acceptable standards of today. The shear number of “Boutique” hotels that now lead in terms of design awareness, service, cheaper price, and accommodation – with most on a lower star ratings – spell the end for Hotels such as the “Grand” – out of touch, old fashioned and not value for money. Our advice to persons booking is to read carefully guess reviews on the hotel you intend to stay at – before booking. Our advice to the body that evaluate hotels and in turn award star ratings is to wake up, stop dishing out stars for “coffee makers” and look at the basic comforts as related to the twenty-first century. We will not be returning to the “Grand” – period.

The staff were very helpful. However although the public areas had been refurbished the rooms also needed attention: carpets threadbare and windows did not seem to fit properly. The breakfast was ok but I gave the scrambled eggs a miss - congealed mass in a bowl in the warming pan hardly looked appetising. I regretted not having tried an alternative hotel with an offer almost half the price I paid at the Grand.

Rooms need an updateRoom was large. Bed was very uncomfortable. I would suggest putting a tempura mattress on top of the original is not enough. Otherwise view was lovely and room was large and comfortable. TV very small - just about see it from bed and remote did not work well. Most problematic was the bed. Did not sleep for the 3 night stay. Breakfast was overcooked and not too appetising. Difficult to attract waiter/ess for coffee.

Good Location I took a single room, the price for B&B with breakfast was good value given location. Room was a little small but quite functional. Its only 10 mins to towm with nice walk along promanade. One thing that is not clear is parking. You can park in the local Car park, and get a voucher to display in your window. Else its a little trcky for parking. I dd not know about the parking vocuher until check in, would make life easier if the parking was highlighted in the Hotel details more clearly. However there very good drop off point with ramp for the eldery or less abled.

family stay in the GrandI visited the Grand Hotel for one night with my mum and young son.We stayed in a family room which was well equipped and nicely designed. A DVD player would have been good but other than that was fab.Location is perfect and the main rooms of the hotel such as the bars and restaurants are well designed and great for passing away an hour or two.My little boy enjoyed the pool the most and wants to know when we are going back!

Grand hotel TorquayThis is the second time we have stayed here within three months. Easy access to the theatre and amenities in Torquay. The hotel was very warm and welcoming. Our room was excellent on both occassions. Leisure facilities o.k. rather crowded in the pool needs re-decorating in changing rooms. It appears the hotel is in the process of modernisation and decoration .Breakfast o.k. could do better with rather greasy breakfast and cold toast . Needs more local produce too.No wi fii in rooms -difficult as it was needed for business.Still a very good location and pleasant experience would visit again.

What A Rip Off Dirty RoomI stayed in a single Sea View room which cost £63, apparently quite a saving on the original price.!!!??? I think not. Having stayed in too many hotels throughout my working life there is no way that this room is worth anything near £30 let alone £63. The room was small with a single bed but that in itself was fine for my needs and is not at all my complaint. The delightful receptionist had offered to upgrade me to a double bedded room but it would have been inland facing so I chose to stick to the 'room with a view' how i wished i had taken her up on her offer. The state of the room was very unsatisfactory but i would like to say all of the following comments are about the room and it's ancient dirty furnishings this is not a poor Housekeeping job at all. The carpet was thread bare in numerous places. The fabric headboard had a greasy dirty mark in the middle of it from the countless heads that had been on it. The chair in front of the dressing table had so much dirt on the arms that there were now scratches in the dirt not the wooden arms. There are lots of water marks on the wallpaper and not just around the window, i could forgive if a window had been carelessly left open but this was not the case. The wallpaper was actually hanging off in the corner of the room. The public areas of the hotel are nice, there's a stylish looking cafe bar area which does pub grub and sandwiches. I chose the main Restaurant as the menu on display in the reception area was tempting. However when i was seated the full A la Carte menu was not available only a much more limited Table d'Hote. This unfortunately did not have sufficient choice and i felt lured into the restaurant on false pretences, so i left. Staff service is warm and welcoming and breakfast (the only meal i ate at the Hotel) was very nice with fab service and lots of choice. Unfortunately I shan't return even for breakfast.

Very friendly and helpful staff. Standard english breakfast hotel food-but staff happy to respond to individual requests at breakfast. Evening meal to large group good value and well cooked.Quick service. One minute walk from station and one minute walk to seafront so perfect if you dont want to use a car. Outdoor area and pool looked good-bit cold right now! Indoor pool the changing rooms were cramped and tatty.Free tea and coffee for residents at the bar. Decor in public areas upstairs rather faded and dark. Slightly surprised to be charged £2 extra for using the room safe-don't think it mentioned that when you go to use the safe!
