Good hotel to stay while in San jose, however the hotel is strict about allowing guests. it can be a little pricey but the location and food is good! great brunch!

I had seen the gripes about there being no a/c in the Gran Hotel Costa Rica, and I will admit that our room was a bit uncomfortable temperature-wise. But the great service and food more than made up for the lack of air for me. Also, there was a great breeze the nights we stayed, so requesting a room on the outer walls might help with that. I know that I will if I ever make it back down that way. The food is also amazing there. My companion and I ordered the seafood for two thinking that it was 18000 colones per person(which it would have been worth), but it was 18000 for the whole thing. Definitely the best value on the menu. Two people completely stuffed with amazing seafood on essentially sixteen bucks a piece. The seafood soup, their signature dish, is also amazing. Finally, the location is great. The street behind the hotel is pedestrian-only and the central market is like six blocks down. We had a blast eating street food and popping into all the little stores. Yes, and there is also a pharmacy and Super on the pedestrian street right behind the hotel, which was perfect for snack and toiletries we might have been missing. Hot room and all, I serously could have been happy spending a couple weeks there.

we stayed at that this hotel the week of 1/25/2009 it was a beautiful hotel , however beware this hotel has no airconditioning. also the diesel trucks run outside of ertain rooms and the fumes are pretty bad, which made sleep next to impossible. other than that the hotel was very nice.

The hotel is a charming old hotel with excellent service and free Internet. The room was pretty cramped, but adequate. It is right in the center of downtown on a lovely square across from the National Theatre and close to shops, restaurants and attractions. It is, however, a 20 cab ride to and from the airport.

Stayed at this hotel two years ago and liked it. This time, however, my experience was a little different. My room was in the back of the hotel. It reeked of stale cigarette smoke and was noisy - kitchen sounds, I think. Staff was nice but they really should do something about that nasty smoke stink.

The Hotel is attractive. The staff was pleasant. However, forget SLEEPING. Our 2nd floor room overlooked the plaza and we could not believe the noise all night long. At around 4am things started settling down except for the occasional scream. We should have moved to another hotel except that none were available. The only option for this hotel is the air conditioned suite. Regardless, I would look for another hotel if possible.

The "standard" room has no A/C, smelled and no hot water. The Staff tried hard to make things better. They changed us to 3 rooms in one night. Needless to say, we changed hotels. This is when online travel website dropped the ball. Upon Customer Service direction, I went to Holiday Inn. I paid for my room and to date, online travel website has not corrected their service. I am a VERY DISAPPOINTED CLIENT. J. Lewis

We stayed here between landing and traveling on to our final destination, so we were only here one night/day. The entrance, lobby and common areas are beautiful and have a wonderful, classic character. The room itself was sparse and aged, but not in a good way. The carpet was worn, the furniture old, the paint graying. The restaurant was surprisingly unimpressive though attractive. The included continental breakfast in the top-floor ballroom had a beautiful view of the city and the breakfast was decent. The staff was helpful and friendly, though the front desk had an interesting view of the exchange rate (significantly off from the rest of the country in fact...) Make sure you don't exchange ANY money at the desk. Overall, it was fine for stopping over and the location could not be beat. Other than that, it left a lot lacking.

We are staying here at the Gran Hotel and so far we have a very good experience. The front desk staff are friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean, not too spacious, but its perfect for a couple. This hotel is very close to everything, malls, shopping centers, drugstores and parks right in the center of the city. They have gym, internet access is free, pool and chess table and free breakfast buffet all on the 5th floor. The restaurants is very classy with a live piano playing while having lunch or dinner or just by sitting there having coffee and listening to some soft mellow music. For the price, it is worth it to stay here.

We stayed here on the first night of our honeymoon and had a great time. We used the business center for internet access, which was great, there are also phones in the rooms. They have a very accommodating staff and nice restaurant and bar. We enjoyed playing in the casino and planning our bus trip form the concierge service in the lobby. The room itself wasn't all that great... 1) there is no air conditioning, so my husband was just miserable, and 2) the bed was really bad... but hey, this is Costa Rica... PURA VIDA!! For a Costa Rican hotel, I thought it was first class.

We took our youngest son (age 24) back to his orphanage in San Jose suburb Santo Domingo. We also used the hotel as a meeting place with old friends. The staff of the hotel helped us negotiate with a taxi for the day trip for Santo Domingo. They translated for us when we made phone calls. They opened their hearts to us when they knew the purpose of our visit. Everyone--waiters, doormen, bell boys, reception, maids, and tour agents did everything to make our stay safe and pleasant as word about us passed throught the hotel. The hotel is also convenient for day tours to cloud forests and volcanos. The restaurant is excellent and the patio opens unto the National Theatre. The hotel is the true heart of the city. They have live music every night. The free breakfast is large and very delicious. The beautiful views in the five story hotel open to all of San Jose and the surrounding mountains. Downtown San Jose has a lot of pickpockets and is not safe at night. The rooms of the hotel are old and in need of renovation. The rooms have fans but no air conditioning. The humidity may bother some people but we had a wonderful stay.

Location was great if you like staying in the middle of a city. It was hard to get a check or followup service in the restaurant.

We stayed there to experience old world CR charm. It was that, yes and the service and friendliness of the staff was definitely high!! I believe they need to maintain the guest rooms a little better. Bathrooms old and a little dirty, no hairdryers and no AC. The breakfast buffet which is included in the rate is delicious.

My best experience ever. This is the only place that I have ever left a 100 tip (50,000 colones)!! Service is the best of anywhere I have been - and I travel the world. Price is very reasonable and staff will make every effort to make your stay 100% PERFECT! Excellent location, though rooms need a bit of work and are a bit small. It is well worth it, though, because of the activities, service, and overall good feeling you get from the hotel. Located in the most cultural, best part of town! DO NOT MISS THIS ONE!

Driving up to the Hotel was like experiencing a 1920's movie. A grand hotel enterance with great lobby. I couldn't be happier for the price. The hotel is located in the downtown center so pedestrian noise is an issue for some rooms. The last time I had a complentary breakfast of their magnitude I was in Poland. No air conditioning in our room, but if that concerns you maybe you should rethink Costa Rica.

The Hotel did not have my reservation information from Orbitz; however, they let me go ahead and check in.

The hotel was in the center of town and the parking was across the street, we had a little trouble finding how to get there, because there are a lot of one way streets. The hotel itself was great, and the staff very friendly. The draw back was the street noise was very loud, being in the center of town where everyone shops and drinks way into the night, made it a little hard sleeping, sounded like they were right in our room.

This hotel's history is easily felt when you stay there, but in a very enjoyable way. The house is beautiful, full of well-kept details from the times when this was Costa Rica's first luxury hotel, and the athmosphere is wonderful. It's warmer, but it doesn't lack anything of the standard features you're looking for in a good hotel. And it has a wonderful breakfast, served on the top floor with a view high above San Jose both of the city and the surrounding hills. Highly recommendable!

"This was my first visit to Costa Rica and the Gran Hotel Costa Rica was my first impression of the country. I loved it. It has wonderful charm and atmosphere and the service was great. The staff were very helpful and the food was delicious. It is in the heart of San Jose, next to the National Theater, and is within walking distance of many museums, parks and stores for shopping (which saves on Taxi/Bus fares). I would recommend this hotel to anyone."
