Arrived early and were greeted by a bare-footed male who was kind enough to let us to check-in early. The bare feet were not a big problem but it was certainly a surprise. Our family room was on the fourth floor, so no less than 60 stairs to the room - yes we counted them! The room was a fair size and well equipped with kettle, hair dryer, TV, DVD player, 'en-suite' partitioned bathroom with toilet and shower (sink in main room). The decor was not to our taste - red ! The condition of the room was clean and tidy but the decor was pretty poor. The wallpaper was hanging off the angled ceiling in one corner where the roof was clearly leaking. This was partly mouldy and very much in need of attention. The rest of the room was equally tired, with a poor finish to the sink surround, hastily painted skirting boards and an overall sense of 'cheap & cheerful'. The shower cubicle was dirty at the base and again, the decor was hurried. Location was good; 5 mins walk to the sea-front and 10 mins walk to the main shopping centre, so we took advantage and did some shopping. Upon our return we opened our door to find our complimentary tea, coffee and sugar had been topped up. We also noticed a 'z-bed' had been removed from the room. Initially we thought nothing of this but the more we thought about it, the more uncomfortable we were that someone had actually been in our room while we were out rather than waiting until we returned. While we appreciate staff must enter the rooms to clean, etc., we didn't expect this 30 minutes after we'd arrived. Very disconcerting. We returned again to our room later in the evening, after a lovely meal in Eastbourne centre, then washed, dressed and made our way to the hotel bar on the ground floor (60 stairs albeit down) and pressed the buzzer 'for attention'. We were greeted once again by our bare-footed friend who was now limping badly and told us he had a broken leg. We asked if we could have 1 x vodka /coke and 1 x beer. He looked in the fridge and said he needed to fetch coke from downstairs. He then returned to tell us he had not had a delivery so had no coke nor beer (while rubbing his 'broken' leg), despite the fact that we had seen beer in the fridge when he had looked for coke!! We got the distinct impression he didn't want to bother serving us. So, we once again climbed the 60 stairs to our RED room and settled in for a quiet night in front of the 4 (yes, 4) fuzzy TV channels (although to their credit there was a good supply of DVD's freely available at the bottom of the stairs). After a night listening to our very creaky bed every time any of us stirred, which was actually fairly comfortable to be fair, we had a very enjoyable breakfast. There was cereal, a full cooked English, toast, tea / coffee / hot chocolate and the service was both swift and very pleasant by a female member of staff who apologised for there being no bar the previous night and told us that she was 'only staff'. All in all, not particularly impressive and we will not be returning despite the lovely breakfast.

Room 4. Very good overall. Room tidy but bits of fluff in the mat in the bathroom were off putting. Good shower with excellent toiletries. Bed linen spotless and very comfortable bed. Breakfast historic!

Nice HotelDecided at last minute to go to Eastbourne area over Bank Holiday weekend and this hotel came up, but only had a small room left. Not thier fault but ours for booking late in the day. Nice hotel, friendly staff and good breakfast. Decor (previously mentioned) is not that overpowering, comfortable lounge and in quite area near Devonshire Theatre and good pub 'The Buccaneer' around the corner serving good food. Easy parking outside or in surrounding streets. Would stay again.

Noisey NorthenersWe were made very welcome on our arrival shown to our room and told when b/fast was and where. We spent little time at the Gladwyn but found it very clean, unfortunatley behind the fresh paint it looked it's age. The main down side were the very noisy northeners in the next room who thought they had to shout and crash around at all hours, this wasn't helped by the waffer thin walls where the room had been devided.

great family hotelWe were so pleased with the location of the hotel. Its 5 mins from the beach and very near all the restaurants. The family room is very big but does not have much of a view. Also very clean but needed a bath for little children. The customer service was excellent and we very much enjoyed sitting in the spacious bar whilst our little boy was safely tucked up in bed after a long day of children's entertaining. Will def go back again. Breakfast was amazing.

friendly welcoming great breakfast and decor 9/10 will returnMy second stay during March in a single room with double bed and ensuite. Colourful decor and extremely welcoming hosts. The rooms have excellent electric convector heaters are spacious, well presented and clean if in need of new carpets. Good quality towels and bathroom supplies and in room complimentary refreshment beverage tray. My rooms even had their own DVD players to use with the library available to guests. A quiet location overlooking the tennis courts park that is home to the pre Wimbledon grass championships. Breakfast was as much as you could eat and the quality superb. On street parking is free directly outside the hotel which is five minutes easy stroll to the seafront. Hard to fault for a business trip or short break. You even get free high speed internet! I usually stay in large chain hotels but won't be considering these for returns to Eastbourne as I'll be heading back to The Gladwyn.

The bright decor was startling but I understand this will be changed. Lots of awful artwork adorning the walls. The couple running the Gladwyn were very helpful

A brilliant hotel. I have now stayed here twice, stopping over for one night on business. The free Wifi throughout is a massive plus and the lovely large lounge area is relaxing and comfortable and great to catch up on work. The rooms are fantastic, room 6 was a particular favourite with fun decor and beautiful bathroom.Gary and Trevor are incredibly hospitable and nothing is too much trouble. Breakfast is also delicious, and always way too much to manage! Will definitely be going back on a regular basis and just need to persuade them to let me move in!

Overal, a great place to stay in Eastbourne! Nice and close to the town centre - about a 5 minute walk, with free on-road parking. Recently, the local council have installed paking meters in most of the Eastbourne town area. Luckily, the road where the Gladwyn is situated, falls outside this area, so it's free all day - if you can find a space duing the daytime, that is!Trevor and Gary were great hosts, making me feel welcome, and the beakfast was superb! OK, the room I stayed in is in need of a bit of modernisation, but it ws clean and quite spacious for a single room. The only niggle is that the shower was very tempermental - taking me ages to get to the right temperature!! But I've been told that this room is next on the refurbish list, hopefully for early next year. I'll be intrigued to find out the difference!!When I'm next down in Eastbourne, in around six months time, I wil look forward to staying at this hotel again.

The people that run this place are so welcoming and helpful, you won't want to leave!! The breakfasts were superb and the decor in all the communal areas vibrant and eclectic - definately better than your average seaside hotel. We stayed in one of the family rooms - 2 adults 2 kids (aged 7 & 2.) Our room was at the top of the building - lots of stairs but not really a problem - we left the buggy in the car. Room was clean and large enough to make one room living easy. ensuite shower/toilet was good. Beware the hot water taps - very hot!! We had booked for 2 nights but stayed 3 as we had such a good time. Eastbourne is a lovely town, perfect for a long weekend. Nice mix of sun, sea and the arts. Highly recommended!!

Excellent service and very congenial hosts who were able to not only provide great hotel service but were also a great source of information on the local area. The breakfasts were among the best I have experienced in any hotel I have stayed in!P.S. The hosts also provided a great lost keys return service...
