This was trip was like my husband and I's second honeymoon. We stayed in room 824, 8th floor, with an amazing view looking over the city. It was as if we could watch the city go to sleep and then come back to life. The room had a feel of vintage with a hint of 2009. This added to the charm of the stay. The bathroom was small, but served it's purpose, who really needs an overly large bathroom? The Lobby, is absolutely breath taking! And the bed has got to be the most comfortable bed we have EVER slept in!! (But warning, if you are allergic to down you might want to bring your own pillow or request for foam pillow) We were given an option to valet parking for $17 per day (plus tax), or park it yourself in the city parking garage for $12 per day. The valet staff knew just how to make you feel like royalty, by opening doors, helping with shopping bags and luggage, etc. I definitely recommend slurging on the extra $5, it is much easier and the service is very worth it. The valet parking is simply billed to your room and you pay when you check out. The location was perfect! Most of the shopping and restaurants are maybe a block or two away. The hotel has room service available, although it is very pricey! It's also nice to have a Starbucks downstairs. Also, every morning the USA Today is delivered at your door. After reading some or the reviews, we were a bit nervous, but this hotel is absolutely beautiful and we definitely will be returning every chance we get!

Location. Room was small with view of brick wall. Better rooms were available, but not offered.

My daughter's entire wedding party stayed at the Francis Marion September 13 & 14, 2008 and we could not have wished for a better location, hotel and staff to support our needs! Not only is the hotel absolutely magnificent, the staff is extraordinarily helpful and cheerful. The rooms are spotless, confortable, the penthouse suites magnificent. We held both the rehearsal dinner and the Sunday brunch at the hotel, and let me tell you about the food! Absolutely delicious and again, great, great wait staff! I'll definitely plan on visiting Charleston again - to escape from the Boston-winters coming upon us very soon - and I'll stay again at the Francis Marion!

When we arrived, there was a line of persons to check in and the staff was rude and not helpful; the time was 3:50 p.m. and I was told check in was at 4:00 p.m. The elevators are very slow. Waited in line for a minimum of 15 minutes each time using elevator. A bell boy told me he had been waiting 25 minutes for an elevator. They charge 10.00 for internet access, 1.00 per local calls, 17.00 for valet parking, 12.00 to park in city garage becasue the hotel has no parking of it's own. The room was standard with a queen and was * a night. The room had no refrigrator and the toliet was so small it looked as if it came out of a boat's bathroom. The room was very small; a standard room at the holiday inn express is truly larger. The door man was too busy socialising with staff that I had to set my suitcaes down to open the door for my family. After three hours of this we checked out and received a refund. Save your vacation from tragedy and do not stay at this hotel!

I just returned from Charleston after a midweek stay. This hotel has the best location. We were able to walk most everywhere we wanted unless we were headed to the beach. If you do not want to walk all the time the bike taxis will pick you up. That by itself was fun. Restaurants are all around you and the proces range from cheap to expensive so yo have your pick. The shopping right outside the hotel is great. you can head in eithe rdirection and will be pleased. The front desk staff was very helpful and made great suggestions for food and fun. Try any restaurant nearby and you will probably not be disappointed. Teh water park at James Island county park was also small and fun. overall great stay and excellent location for hotel. will stay there again.

The hotel location was great for us! Close to restaurants and many other sites....the starbucks was awesome to have right in the hotel! The rooms were fine...not brand new, but nicely kept up, minus a few small details.

Very friendly staff and large rooms. The Francis Marion was a fairly large hotel with a nice ambiance. The staff was very friendly and helpful. There was a short flight of stairs to reach the lobby from either entrance, although one entrance has an elevator to this level if needed.

After reading many reviews of the Francis Marion, we were slightly concerned about what we might encounter. We travel quite frequently and my wife and I were thoroughly pleased from the moment we arrived until the time we checked out. The lobby is grand, the room lovely, well appointed (the bathroom is small but adequate) and extremely clean and it's in a great location at the north end of the Historic District. It's a supurb old hotel that doesn't show its age. We had a spectacular view of the Old Citidel, Francis Marion Park, the Ravenel Bridge and Charleston Harbor. For most hotels that would be sufficient. However, the staff puts this hotel over the top. We had the pleasure of working with 2 of the hotel's concierges. Both gave us great choices for attractions to see and places to dine and we were not disappointed by their recommendations. They gave us 100% of their time and we never felt rushed. The resaurant supervisor, went well beyond his responsibilities to make our stay enjoyable. While having late afternoon drinks in the hotel bar, he looked up the harbor cruise schedule for us to determine which one we could make and made dinner reservations for us after the harbor cruise. He also spent considerable time with us just chatting and making us feel like we were old friends. Our experience was great and we would highly recommend this hotel!

We booked the Francis Marion on the hotel website for 259 per night. We received a confirmation from the hotel, but did not notice that they did not confirm the rate on the room. When we checked in, the room rate was changed to 329 per night. We challenged the desk manager/supervisor and were told that it was policy to NOT provide the rate on internet bookings on the confirmation sheet. They would not honor the rate that we booked, nor did they honor the rack rate posted in the closet of 299 per night. One word to describe this practice: SLEEZY. That being said, the room was lovely, large and quite spacious. It was a paradise after a long day of sight seeing. The shower was powerful and the room was clean. The bellhop and concierge staffs were top-notch. The location was perfect. We were in a safe area with lots of quality restaurants and bars within a short walking distance. If the Francis Marion was honest in its reservation system, I would recommend staying there; but they were not. Therefore, unless you have a confirmation reservation with a guaranteed rate, I would avoid this hotel as if it had rats in the room, as compared to the rats working behind the desk.

AMAZING HOTEL!!! The staff was amazing- the doormen were SO helpful each day in giving me directions around town and getting a taxi for me the day I left! Even the security guard who was in the lobby when I would come in late from going out with friends was SOO nice- The room was really nice and clean- small bathroom but perfect for just a weekend getaway! PEREFECT location- connected to a starbucks (what could be better???), right in the middle of the nightlife (although my room was VERY quiet at night), and GREAT shopping within just a few steps of the hotel...I will definatly stay here again next time I go to Charleston!

Great location! Bathrooms are quite small but this is to be expected in historic buildings. Charming historic hotel for those liking historic buildings. Be prepared for smaller bathrooms as are customary in historic facilities. They are adequate and well appointed. The hotel restaurant offers great breakfast, the low country style eggs Benedict is terrific! A parking garage adjoins the hotel for those preferring to self park plus the hotel offers reasonable valet service.

We lucked out with great view of Charleston and the harbor. Location was perfect for a day of shopping. Leave the car in the hotel garage and walk everywhere. Courteous, efficient bell staff.

I know the bathrooms are small but that is my only complaint. It is one of the older hotels so you get what you pay for. YOu are right on King Street and will not have a need for your car if you are on vacation. (Cost around 15/day in addition to your room for parking)

The lobby is nice and the restaurant was good. The location is somewhat far from the main historic area. This is an older hotel but is kept up nicely. The rooms are dated but fairly large. Our bathroom was very small but clean. The hotel has a nice restaurant in it and there is free computer access.

I stayed here for a conference but brought my family along. The elevator doesn't go to the main entrance level so I had to have help carrying my daughter in her stroller up the steps. They a/c was broken the first night. When they fixed it the next day it was noisy. I had to call 3 times for the crib I had requested. They told us our room was leaking water on the room below 2 days into our stay. Then the sprinkler in our room started leaking they next day. They suggested we move rooms but we were leaving on an early flight the next morning so we put up with the drip for the night because I didn't want to move our things. They room they wanted to move us to was the room below which was the one they told us was leaking as well. I also had ordered a burger medium-well for my daughter that was served rare from the restaurant. They best part of this stay was returning to my own house where everything was in working order!

The Francis Marion was very friendly and helpful when checking in; they even gave us personalized maps for attractions upon our request. The rooms were comfortable except for the loud noises across the street that went on all night. Plush bedding and a comfortable chair to put on shoes. Beautiful view of the city on the upper floors. Very convienient Starbucks underneath hotel while walking to the park or shopping directly across the street.

Clean and convenient for my needs. Room was entirely to small. While nice and clean and etc. I most likely will not stay there again. Was very disappointed in the size and scale of room I was given. Looking at the literature of the rooms and etc. I was given a closet.
