There were special touches, putting water and ice in the room. There was nothing I didn't like. Staying at The Empress was much better than I expected it to be and far,atmosphere, and location. The setting is so distinctive that it makes you feel you have really traveled, the location couldn't be better, and the feeling of being spoiled and treated luxuriously was really wonderful.Service details included calling me by name, having wonderful appetizers available in the evening and a delicious full breakfast in the am, providing water and ice at bedtime, having a beautiful chocolate teacup and spoon waiting on the table, a poem wrapped in a ribbon after turning down the beds for the evening, and all the concierge services one could want.The beds were super comfortable, the place was very quiet, the bathroom all upgraded and modern, and again, the sense of history and elegance not to be beat.

We stayed at the Empress in Victoria because it truly looked like the best place to view Victoria from. Were we wrong!! The room cost a small fortune, there was no air conditioning, no high speed internet and our room overlooked an enclosed back courtyard that included parked cars and garbage dumpsters. All this for over $ a night! The front of the Empress is impressive and so is the high tea but if you do not book a reservation in advance for the tea you better make other plans. The staff were unhelpful and didn't even ask how our stay was. This is an obvious sign that they know what the answer will be. We stayed in a number of different hotels on our two week vacation and the Empress was the most expensive and by far the worst hotel of the bunch. I have stayed in my last Fairmont hotel. Every time I do so I leave disappointed. The chain tends to purchase historic hotels and then does nothing to update them. They simply use the historic nature of the property to sell it. My advice is to take something from the name. If your stay is "fair" then you've done as well as you could possibly hope with a Fairmont. If you go to Victoria stay in one of the many newer hotels which provide excellent service and amenities and visit the outside of the Empress for a quick photo.

There is no high-speed wireless internet in the rooms. Bathroom was not spotlessly clean. Some rooms are pretty small. There was usually a line-up at the front desk. Poor water pressure in the shower. Lovely old-fashioned hallways. Afternoon tea is expensive but exquisite.

Friendly staff. Great decor. It was perfect. This hotel was beautiful! An authentic victorian gem. Great staff, great location, within walking distance to food, shopping and fun.

I was very happy with our stay here. They upgraded our room for free and surprised us with a congratulatory dessert because we were on our honeymoon. The deluxe room we stayed in was huge, really nice, and very clean. Service was really great everywhere in the hotel. The afternoon tea was amazing, both of the restaurants were fantastic, and the spa was wonderful (the eucalyptus hydrotherapy bath was wonderful, awesome massage). Highly recommend staying here. Will definitely stay again. In fact now we're BIG Fairmont fans...

Very accommodating; fantastic all around. Nothing. Arrived and checked in without any problems; room was perfect; bed was very comfortable and quiet. We were able to park the car and never use it since everything is within walking distance. Food at the hotel is fantastic had breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner. Afternoon tea is a great experience worth every penny. Our dinner was in their lounge with live Jazz in the background, we opted for the curry buffet which was the best curry I have ever had. Since the hotel is in the center of the inner harbor we also enjoyed lunch and 1 dinner near. The hotel location is perfect near everything. We are planning to return again and often.
