Perfect location, but for the rest very poor hotel. Unfriendly personnel, small rooms, out of order lifts, no room service. Very noisy air con and a non working TV.

Good points: Coldest air I've ever found in a hotel. That was great 'cause I like it COLD when I sleep. Only problem... you had to turn the air conditioner knob back to medium to get real cold air. We got a suite with curtained glass doors which was great for us because we were traveling with our nephew and this gave us more privacy. Location is for those who want to visit the park and Natural History Museum. The concierge was helpful and looked like George Clooney. Complaints: small marble bathrooms but serviceable; our room door would not close and lock from the inside; The buffet breakfast was strange because the lady that took our order and seated us also COOKED THE BREAKFAST - in a suit.

Super location for our one-night stopover...close to Central Park but not too far from the action. They gave us a free upgrade to a junior suite (without prompting) for the last night of our honeymoon trip on our way back home from Ireland. Room was spacious by NY standards for the price, although bathroom was small as expected. Staff was courteous and quick to act. Our only markdown came from the concierge who was about as helpful as the yellow pages. Seemed very non-committal to giving advice on dining options for dinner.

Location and rec. for dinner by concierge. One of our room was much too hot and nothing was done to resolve problem. While the hotel has been recently refurbished, it seems the infrastructure has not been updated. The heating and cooling system was not adjustable and while all 3 rooms were too warm, one was just unbearable and despite complaining, nothing was done.

Great hotel in a good location. Fantastic room size for NYC, a little tired around the edges but I know I'd never get the same sq footage for the price at any other hotel. Only issue was the noise from the other rooms using their showers or baths but a small price to pay for a great hotel in a great location, the view over the Natural History Museum was fantastic. Staff friendly and polite, looking to go back to NYC in October and will definately book the Excelsior again.

This is an old hotel which was opulent in it's time. The suite with the glass doors provides privacy - important when traveling with family. Our teen stayed up watching TV while we were able to sleep without being disturbed. Mattress was on the hard side and bedspread was very heavy on my feet. No light blanket was provided. Marble bathroom was small but OK. Airconditioning was outstanding - I like it COLD when I sleep and I was able to get that by putting the thermostat on low instead of high. Don't know why. Breakfast was served in a very nice wood panneled room but there was only ONE overworked and irritable lady staffing the dinning room! She took the reservation, seated you, then incredibily COOKED the breakfast at a buffet like table. I've never seen anything like it. She was cooking in a suit. The choices were 16.50 for a breakfast of bread, cereal and juice or 20 for EVERYTHING. The concierge is very capable and looked just like George Clooney. Many good restaurants nearby and Nat His Museum is close. One big complaint I have is the mini bar. DO NOT touch it. It has a device on it that charges you (outrageous sums) if you even MOVE an item. When I went in I cautioned our teen not to get anything from the bar but but it has a snack tray on the top with nuts temptingly displayed. I thought I'd move the nuts where they couldn't be seen then for some reason I didn't. Good thing because back in the bedroom was a note card saying if anything on the snack bar was removed for 20 seconds you were billed for it. It left me with the feeling the hotel was desparate.

Although I'd been to Manhattan many times, my wife and daughter were making their first visit. Having a place away from the madness of midtown was a real treat, yet train and bus access placed us minutes away from just about everywhere. Located across from the Natural History Museum, and less than a block from Central Park, the location offers no shortage of great restaurants all within a few blocks. We stayed in a small but comfortable room with two twin beds, with a window that faced West toward the Hudson. The beds were comfortable and ample, although the TV was small and suffered from bad reception during a thunder storm. The pay per view movies were outrageously expensive. The bathroom was small, but the towels were very soft and the soaps and hair products were of good quality. The continental breakfast was adequate but with a short walk West on 81st to Amsterdam, and a quick right turn, one can have a lovely breakfast at EJs, a local diner that had reasonable prices, good food, and excellent service. The 'business center' was a small closet (I kid you not) next to the front desk with a computer in it. You pay about four bucks for 30 minutes access to a rather weak wi-fi connection, and I suffered through a number of time-outs. The staff was basically ok, and some more helpful than others. I didn't get a warm fuzzy feeling from anyone, though. Overall, we really liked the vintage vibe of the place, and loved the location on the Upper West Side. The price was reasonable for Manhattan,

Staff was excellent in assisting us with check-in. Water in the shower went from hot to cold. Very close to everything the Upper West Side has to offer and a great price. Right across from the American Museum of Natural History. Parking available there as well.

Clean comfortable rooms, although AC in one of our rooms temperamental. Gym is not as good as it first looks. Cycle machines not working, but weight machines okay. Running machines showing their age, but who needs one with Central Park on your doorstep ! Reception staff not overtly friendly, but helpful enough when asked for help. Excellent location in a quiet area, close to Central Park, beside Natural History Museum. Close to Subway with good access to rest of Big Apple. Overall good value, and as good as many more expensive hotels. A good base, with easy access to all sights and attractions.

The Excelsior is in a great neighborhood with lots of inexpensive restaurants and a family feel. The location is terrific. You are steps from Central Park and public transportation. The rooms are nice and fairly large for New York. The beds are VERY comfortable. We would happily stay at the Excelsior again.

Leaving, check-out. Rude people. If you stay at this hotel, do not expect to be treated with friendliness or respect.

For a 16 story hotel, two ancient and slow elevators is a drawback. The elevators are my only complaint.

I was really surprised when we got to the hotel, the neighborhood was great we always felt save walking around even at night, sometimes it would just be me and my son. The hotel upgraded us to a suite when we arived and that made all the difference in the world, the kids had a pull out sofa and we had a king size bed, and it was the most confortable bed and bed covers. The room staff was soo wonderful not only with us but with our kids, they were very helpful in making reservations and getting us a rental car. The rooms were very clean and not so small and we have seen small. Very good restaurants, I would recomend, Sarabeth, EJ's dinner and a few others around the neighborhood. Would deffenetely stay here again.

For the price, quality and location were excellent. Furniture could use an upgrading. The hotel is well located property in an excellent neighborhood with easy access to Subway, central park and bus tours.

We booked a double deluxe room...they call it a suite. But the rooms are very cramped especially the bathroom. Good cleaning service every day. Expensive hotel for the quality of rooms and facilities. Located close to central park but a 25 mins taxi ride to down town.

This was a perfect spot with family - it's quiet and nice. In front of Museum of natural History and 1/2 a block from central park. Train was on corner -so easy access to all areas. Hotel does not offer free coffee nor do they have any microwave or refrigerator in room. Coffee a bit expensive and should at least be complimentary. Everything else was good. Nice place and nice service.

Excellent location. Cleanliness good but not excellent. Fantastic location right near Central Park and Museum of Natural History. They upgraded us to a 2 room suite at no extra charge. Lots of nice restaurants nearby. Would definitely stay here again and would recommend to others.
