Booked our hotel and called to make sure they could match a price we found on the internet. Staff said they could match the price, so we booked our hotel. Once we got to the hotel they wanted to charge us full price. It was a joke. We asked to talk to the manager and they gave us the run around. After a couple of long phone calls and demands to talk to the manager we got some answers, but they still socked it to us with parking. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone as the staff are not all on the same page!

We arrived early & the Essex was able to check us in early, which was great!!! The rooms are small, but VERY nicely appointed w/a VERY comfortable bed & linens. We explored ALL of Chicago & found the Essex was very centrally located to do just about ANYTHING!!! The bus picks up right out front & you can go anywhere in the city! BONUS: The Taste of Chicago was going on, which we didn't know about & it was right across the street in Grant Park w/awesome FREE music everyday!!! A MUST DO- Go to the NEW Skydeck at the Sear's Tower!!! We were lucky enough to get up there for the 4th of July fireworks, which was one of the coolest experiences we've ever had for the 4th!!! ALSO- please note that EVERYONE in Chicago is unbelieveably friendly & helpful!!! On one of the buses, they found out it was my husband's birthday & the entire bus broke out into an improptu rendition of "Happy Birthday", we had the best time & will be back for sure!!!

Our room was on the small side, as was the bathroom, but it was quiet and the bed was very comfortable. It had the duvet-type beddding, instead of a nasty bedspread, and I always appreciate that. We paid $* for our room, and were happy to find a mini-frig, coffee pot, and ice down the hall. Parking was $37. Lobby's small, but who cares? Huge swimming pool, sauna and workout area at no extra charge.

We enjoyed our stay at this hotel. The location was very central and easily accessible by bus and subway. We were only a few blocks from the Art Institute and the Museum campus. However, the hotel restaurant was pretty mediocre, the bathroom in our room was very small and there was no fridge in our room. Overall it was great for the price.

Nice hotel, clean rooms, nice facilities. Advertised as a "not quite new" hotel, but in very good shape. Reasonable price compared to neighboring hotels. Others may be fancier, but the Essex fits the bill for casual traveler. Perfect location; 10 min walk to Field Museum, Soldier Field, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium. The bad: $40 for overnight valet parking, no cheaper self-park offered. This is not clearly listed on the Orbitz desrciption, though a frequent big city traveler would probably expect it. You can probably find cheaper parking in a public lot. However, the valet service was very good. Desk and porter service was excellent. Location was superior. A nice place.

Just an FYI. Hotel was ok, would stay again. But would be nice to know that parking costs THIRTY-SEVEN dollars a night!!

We loved this hotel...it was right across from Grant Park. The rooms were modern, must have been recently updated. The pool was cold, but the water was clean and the fitness room overlooked the pool. There was a small gathering area outside the pool area to watch the fireworks display at night. It was not exactly in the heart of the shopping, but it wasn't too far away.

This hotel is very close to the Shedd aquarium and Field museum, that was the main reason why I booked it, and that it is one of only a few hotels in downtown Chicago with an indoor pool. We were quite pleased with how easy it was to find. The parking garage is on the side street, so we did have to go around the block. Parking in down town is very expensive, Even here plan to tack on * a night for your vehicle to be parked in their garage, but that does inclued the valet, so not a terrible price. The pool was very spacious, but a little cold. The front desk staff were quite friendly and knowledgable about the neighborhood,(there is a Walgreens within about 10 blocks) and sending us to a very good steakhouse for super(Millers Pub). Other than the cold pool I'd say the only thing that was a negative was the noise, you can hear conversations in the adjacent rooms, as well as the noise from the train a couple blocks away. All in all a pretty good stay, and the restaurant down stairs is very good for breakfast and quite reasonably priced.

We were in town for my daughters graduation,we booked through Travelocity,so we got a really good price. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Our room was very clean and the beds were very comfortable.I love the location, right in the middle of everything it seemed like. The resturant was pretty good, breakfast was really good.We didn't use the pool, but went to take a look at it.It was really nice, not crowded and there was always a lifeguard on duty.We really enjoyed our stay at the Essex, and will definitely stay there again.

The hotel staff was courteous, helpful, and attentive. Although our bathroom was a bit small, the bedroom was comfortable and quiet. The Essex is very reasonably priced and located in close proximity to Grant Park (across the street), Millenium Park, the Museum Campus, and numerous downtown attractions.

A fantastic place to stay when visiting Chicago. They have really updated the rooms with flat screen televisions, mini refrigerators, nice decorations, etc. The bathroom was small but functional. The location was absolutely fantastic, and the restaurant in the lobby was good and reasonably priced. The free shuttle was a nice add on as well. The only problem we had were the maids slamming the doors early in the morning when cleaning the rooms around ours.

What a find. The location is fantastic for the Field Museum, aquarium, science and industry, Millenium Park, and the hotel is an easy walk from the train station and the city bus stops across the street. Located in the South Loop, it is quieter and college art crowd funkier than Gold Coast but had all we needed for our 8 year old son, and friends with boys age 10, 11 and 13. Elder boys stayed w/their Mom in a standard. We had: nice TVs with cable, a roomy pool enclosed for rainy Midwest days. Rooms are nicely redecorated, though lack microwaves and frigs. We found the ice bucket and soda/water machine on the 7th floor worked fine. We had 2 standard room, 2 double beds and it was fine for us since we were only indoors after dinner. Bathrooms are a tad tight but work fine. The staff at this place was the nicest I can recall in a big city. Check and recheck starting 2 wks. out. Saw the Sox win, all the museums, Buddy Guy's blues club is a block away on Wabash and Eleven is the best joint for family dining on great food. Two blocks from Essex. Yolk great for daytime but the coffee was bad twice.

My daughter and I stayed at the Essex Inn Chicago during a college visit to the WIndy City. The hotel was very nice, the staff was more than friendly and helpful. The location was perfect for us because of the proximity to Columbia College buildings. It was very quiet at night. If I had to complain about anything, it would be that the room was a little warm and stuffy. Overall, I would definately recommend it.

I was very happy with the Essex Inn! We came into town early-11am on a Friday. I asked if we could check in early because I was travelling with 3 children, and the front desk was more than happy to oblige. Every single person on staff at the hotel was friendly and helpful-well, except for the lifeguards at the pool, but they spend all day telling people not to run:) The pool was amazing-even better than the picture. We spent a few hours each day of our stay at the pool. Our room was remodeled, and nice, although a little on the small side. Everything had a nice, clean, modern feel to it. The outdoor patio area at the pool was very nice-I don't recall seeing pictures of it when booking the hotel, so it was a nice surprise. Whenever we stay in Chicago, we buy CTA transit passes. The Roosevelt station is about 3 blocks away, and a CTA bus stop is right across the street from the hotel. This hotel is in close proximity to the museum campus area, so if you are touring Shedd, the Field museum and such, this is a close hotel for that. I would definitely stay here again!

The windows can not be opened, so the room had a smell and there was no fresh, natural air. The air conditioned can not be regulated, so at times I was cold. The rest, fine.

Hotel was plan. The front desk was not nice or helpful in terms of the area and where to go. The rooms are very small. No perks like coffee in the lobby or free newspaper. I was pretty much dissappointed and would never stay there again.

We were in town to go to the Taste of Chicago in grant park. The hotel was across the street from the park. We got a good discount on the room and it was a very nice room. Would have like more control on the air conditioner as it was a very hot weekend. All the staff was very friendly.

The staff at the hotel was very unfriendly. My son arrived and they was very rude to him. I came and they act as if they couldn't find the information. They asked for my id and credit card and swipe it and then told me that the rooms wasn't ready , that it may be a hour or so before the rooms will be ready. I immediately call online travel website and the agent call the hotel and told me she would do her best to take of the problem. Thank God for professional and helpful people that care about your well -being. I turly am grateful for her kindness . Thank you.
