Esmeralda Resort is quiet and peaceful located only steps away from beautiful Orient Bay. Views and scenery are great. Staff was pleasant and helpful. Resort is made up of separate villas with 4 rooms in each that share a pool. On-site Astrolabe Restaurant is beautiful with an open area overlooking a pool. Continential breakfast includes fruit, juice and bread - just right for us, but others may prefer to order off the menu. Dinner menu is French cuisine. Other restaurants are close by with various menus. We rented a car and traveled to various locations on the island including Dutch Phillipsburg and Grand Case on the French side. We found Sang's Super Center in Phillipsburg, which is a supermarket for basic supplies. Recommend going through Phillipsburg for supplies from the airport. Stores on the island are small and generally limited in what they carry. Expect prices for food and basic needs to be high as everything has to be imported. Orient Bay is beautiful and the water is clear and calm. Chairs and umbrellas were provided by Esmeralda in front of Coco Beach Restaurant and Bar. Beachboy is friendly and helpful and will bring water, drinks, etc. Water sports (jetski, parasailing, wind sailing, etc.) available on the beach. Also, restaurant/bars and small boutiques are along the beach. A great destination to get away and just relax!

We picked this resort off the internet and thanked God for our luck! Orient beach only 100 yds. away, was the most beautiful beach we have been to. The Coco Beach "tiki hut" restaurant had delicious food and the service on the beach was the best! The staff at the resort was unbelievalby friendly and gave us great tips for visiting the island. We would go back there in a heartbeat!!! Thanks for a fabulous six days!!! Cathy and Bud

The Esmeralda hotel on Orient beach is made up of villa type rooms in clusters of 3 or 4 one level units with a large porch (table, 2 chairs). Each unit has a swimming pool. The deluxe room is one large room, king size bed (very firm), satellite TV, safe, a small kitchenette area- that includes a two burner stove, small refrigerator, coffee pot and a toaster oven (no microwave?), silverware, glassware, dishes etc. I'm a good cook and I would be hard pressed to make a meal with what was provided and not having a microwave made it impossible to heat things up. However, we don't go on vacation to cook so this wasn't an issue for us but it could be for some. The bathroom had a large bath tub shower combination. One sink vanity with a large mirror. Water pressure was non-existent (problem for my wife with thick curly hair) and water temperatures fluctuated greatly. The staff at the hotel are very friendly, with the exception of the desk person who looked at times as if you were bothering her with simple questions. Although the propery is "beach front" you can't see the water, with maybe the exception of a few units. From the unit that we stayed in(closest to the entrance/ furthest from the beach)the beach front was a pretty long walk especially when lugging beach bags, towels, books etc. The grounds are well kept and very clean. There is a restaurant on the premises. The hotel special included a continental breakfast which was juice, coffee, fruit and a basket with toasted bagettes and croissants, jelly etc. Eggs, bacon, pancakes etc. are an extra charge. The beach bar associated with, but not owned by the hotel has beach chairs for hotel guests and attentive beach boys for drinks and food that can be charged to your room. Beach towels are provided daily by the hotel. You will need a car to get around the island or a cab (expensive). Hotel security is present. Plenty of hungry cats around the grounds.

The Esmerelda was nice, if over-priced. Our room was large, and clean, but pretty plain and not exactly luxurious. It was only about a 3 minute walk from the beach, which was really nice. The continental breakfast consisted of 2 croissants and a few pieces of bread, as well as fruit salad. It was enough for me, but my boyfriend generally ordered an over-priced item from the breakfast menu because the lack of protein bothered him. The staff was nice, although it was hard to get specific directions about where to go and what to do - they seemed frustrated when we asked more than one question about anything.

There is little or no indication you are in a hotel, and they are supposed to help or serve your needs. The person at the desk looks like she is doing you a favor, although there was nothig going on to cause he to be too busy. The restaurant is overpriced as is everything in the area. BUT, if you like loud music wafting over from the nearby beach bars, semi-operational tvs, in easy walking distance to Orient Beach, this place is for you.
