I stayed here for three nights with my boyfriend. The location of the hotel is fantastic and the interior looks stunning with its old features, however upon arrival we were greeted very poorly by a very rude man who I believe to be the manager. He seemed bored in his job and didn't once smile leaving us to feel as we were an inconvenience. The room was small and not maintained very well. The window opened but when shut rattled throughout the night. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. I think the barmaid that served us deserves a merit for being so cheery whilst all the rest of the staff looked miserable as sin.

Room and bathroom spacious and clean, although room not cleaned on Saturday. Free parking in street. Nice decor and bar. But when I arrived at 1.15pm I was told my room wasn't ready. No apology or explanation, just not ready. I went away and came back about 2pm, but it still wasn't ready. I sat in the bar until 3.45pm and it STILL wasn't ready. What further annoyed me was that every time I asked, she said "What was your name again?" Four times I told her! I was thinking of walking out and trying another hotel. Finally it was ready at 4pm, but they didn't tell me, I had to ask again. Then on Sunday my room was cleaned but no towels were supplied. I went downstairs to go to the bar and asked about the towels. She just went to the back room, came out and handed them to me! I was supposed to take them up myself! There was a 10% service charge included in the room rate. There was no service! No security. Very pickable door lock and an unsecured back entrance. I wouldn't stay there again.

This hotel is a lovely 19th century house, it has lots of character and was a pleasant change from a modern hotel.

A great place to spend my one pre-interview nightAt such a reasonable price I wasn't sure what to expect, but the hotel staff were very helpful, my room was spacious and clean... in fact the only minor issue was the fact that the plug did not fit securely enough to have a bath. Overall well worth the money I paid.

We found it eclectic and slightly off beat. For us we thoroughly enjoyed it but others should be aware that it is a little quirky

overnight stayQuite good location, within walking distance of the city . Hotel appears as an attractive building but is a little run down inside . No lift for elderly guests. Some of the bathrooms are deplorable.Mine was okay but not so for my parents. It can be loud at night .Breakfast is not really worth having . Best to go elsewhere All is all would not recommend this hotel .Sorry !!!!

No good if you need to get up early. This hotel was no worth the money paid. It was ok. As it was a warm night I had to have the bedroom window open and the noise from the bar of the hotel was unbearable. It was one o'clock at night. I got dressed and went to reception to ask if they could quieten it down. They did nothing. After 15 minutes I had to shout out of the window ' have a bit of thought some people have to work in the morning it is after one o'clock' It did quieten down after that but I was not pleased. When I complained in the morning, they just shrugged and said tell them at head office. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone, and I certainly would not stay there again.

comfortable & convenientI picked Elmbank on price and location and found that it fulfilled my expectations. The room was well decorated and nicely appointed. The location was quiet but convenient for York itself and Askham Bryan College where I had an appointment. Having come by train i wanted to use the bus network and luckily there was a bus stop a short walk away. I did not eat at the hotel so cannot comment on the food provided. The reception staff were very eager to help but were presumably new to the job as they were definitely lacking in experience. my only criticism would be that the reception desk was unattended more often than not, and the addition of a bell to get attention would help.

There was no meals available in the restaurant due to staffing problems. We were not informed until we arrived It seemed of no real concern to the staff. Location great - about 10-15minsto main attractions.Lots of restaurants nearby, so no real problem. Hotel is a living example of Arts and Crafts slendor -fab-worth a visit for this.Bedrooms a bit tired -bathrooms new. Breakfast reasonable.

Great hotel, 10 minutes easy walk from the old town gates, 15 minutes from the Minster. Wood panelling, Chesterfield sofas and double height ceiling in main lounge big selling point. Only downside is slightly tricky parking with 3 small carparks and on street parking outside the hotel... lots of room unless you arrive late when you might have to park on restricted area and move your wheels first thing! All in all a great find!!!

We stayed here on a Friday night and the hotel is in a good location, it is a great price for reasonable accommodation, would say the room decor is quite dated. Would recommend at the 'ratestogo' price but would be a bit upset paying the 'rack rate' for this room
